Expert: Missing girl likely went with someone she knew

12:19 PM PDT on Wednesday, July 1, 2009

A search is under way in the town of McCleary for 10-year-old Lindsey Baum.

McCLEARY, Wash. -- A national expert helping in the search for 10-year-old Lindsey Baum says someone Lindsey knew might be responsible for her disappearance.

Baum vanished while walking home from a friend’s house Friday around 9 p.m.

"Based on the information I have, it’s someone she possibly knows or is in the area, not outside the area," said Henry Schmidt, with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Schmidt, a retired sheriff from Wyoming, arrived in McCleary to assist with the search Sunday.

Volunteers and police have been going door-to-door to talk to every person in McCleary.

Officially, search coordinators with the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office said they are not leaning any direction yet as to what happened to Lindsey.

Investigators have not found any evidence to suggest she was kidnapped, got lost or just ran away.

Schmidt said the majority of abducted children are taken by people they know.

Schmidt said statistically, most abducted children are murdered within 24 hours. But, he said, that doesn’t make searchers give up hope.

“I’ve seen positive results," Schmidt said. "There’s proven cases out there of kids being found a couple of years later."

A spokesperson for Lindsey's mother says the family is holding out hope and trying to stay positive, but as time passes they say that's harder to do.

Late Tuesday night, residents of McCleary gathered in the city park to hold a vigil for a Lindsey, a familiar bright face to many of them.

"Honestly, I know she's alive," Melissa Baum, the missing girl's mother told KING 5. "And I just wanted everybody watching for her."

Baum says she volunteered to take a polygraph. She wanted to clear herself, although police tell us she is not a suspect.

"I don't want people saying oh maybe the mom got mad at her and stashed her and now saying she ran away, I don't want anything like that," says Baum. "I want everyone to know my daughter is missing."

Melissa Baum says she's thankful for all that people have done for her family. Lindsey's father, who lives in Tennessee, is expected to arrive in town on Friday.

Lindsey is 4-foot-9, 80 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes, last seen wearing a light blue hooded pullover shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to call the hotline that has been set up. The number is 1-866-915-8299 or e-mail detectives at: soadmin@co.grays-harbor.wa.us

so if she went up 6th, instead of east on Maple, then she went down a lot of steets to not get on 3rd.  let me find out who lives on the other streets she would have went down if she went up 6th.  I also would not know if she went up 2nd or 1st once across the highway.

where did the other kids who were walking her partway, leave her ?  wouldn't they know if she went up that street or what?  or did they leave her before she got to 6th?

I did not know where to begin on Maple to get to 6th so I just started there at 6th

KaraK, thanks, I'm guessing by what you wrote that Lindsey was a little rebellious?   " simply because they are (especially Lindsey) very unique with their own character and personality and though it sometimes seemed dark that was just her expressing herself in her own way. It to us was like her cutting holes in the knees of all of her brand new jeans. "

From over yonder:
Quote

I called the Shell gas station. It is called MIKE's MARKET. The lady said they are about 1/2 block away from the main intersection which is a 3-way Stop.

Said they are open till 11pm or 11:30 depending on how busy they are on Fri nights.
She also said technically, they are on Simpson St.

Also said there is a small grocery store nearby but believes it closes at 9 pm.

for the names I have of people living on 6th street, the only last two names I have who match last names in grays harbor so list is for johnson and williams, two VERY common last names.  I will try to see if they are related to the people who are living on 6th.

Good some things got cleared up. I was concerned about the pic..Sorry I missed that.

Kara welcome and so glad you can try to enlighten us on details. There is one I am not sure of. did someone watch Lindsey walk for a bit or not? Also, just for my own curiosity. If there is a person in town who has it out for the mom to the point of posting possible slanderous comments and allegations, why is this person not considered a person of interest or a person LE needs to at least talk to?

Pink thanks for posting the pics..

It to us was like her cutting holes in the knees of all of her brand new jeans. "

Sorry I am having trouble posting it keeps bumping me. It would be fair to say she was a bit rebellious but only to an extent. She was over all a good girl who was trying to deal with family issues - and by that I mean her dad not being around. Her dad had been around full time until a few years ago and just within the last year I believe she found out that he was not coming back so she was working through it in her own way.

Kara, I use to live in a tiny little town, in fact, I have lived in several tiny little town.  Kids usually congregate somewhere or have favorite places to hang out.  Do you know where that might be?  a park, an arcade, a boys and girls type place, a skate area.  our town had a place called the ledge which was nothing more than a concrete emabankment retaining wall they would sit on and talk to each other. It was at the side of the grocery store.

if there is a local place to just hang out maybe someone would watch them there, then get to know their habits, somene who lived across the street etc.

what is the name of the school they went to?

are there any known weirdos around who the town thinks is creepy?  if so what street are they on?

any other places etc you can think of that I can try to check to see who is around

okay that article answered a couple of my questions

One of Lindsey’s best friends, 11-year-old Christina Richards, said the two would hang out together at a local creek or the city park and muse about life.

Baum attended school for a short while in Elma, near the McCann home. But this year, she enrolled as a fifth-grader at McCleary School. Her mom said she got along very well with her teacher Lynn Bolster.
