mamacrazy  are you the other monkey with an autistic child?

Tracygirl~My nephew aged 7 is a child with autism.  He is a sweet and loving boy, one of four children.   He does not fit that "answers @yahoo.com description at all imo.

Your words reflect exactly what a former co-worker shared concerning her nephew who has autism.  However ... she also shared that there are parents in her sister and BIL's support group who are not as fortunate.  Some parents ... while loving their children with all their hearts ... are dealing with very serious issues as the autism spectrum is far reaching in regards to behaviour.

ADD with hyperactivity is another very common disorder that makes a kid seem "off ". It's quite common and the kids usually take meds. Somone I know, their kid has it. Nice kid, mumma tries real hard, kid always has some drama going on at the school, etc. Mostly his relationships with peers. He senses that he is being picked on ( sometimes, he isn't ..just a real sensitive kid ) and retaliates in an overboard way.

been thinking all night(no sleep again ugh), up this morning and running all this stuff thorugh my mind again.

Jimi Hendrix keeps whispering in my ear...if you know what I mean

and believe me, I can't get no relief, this case is not allowing me to sleep, to think, to do anything.  out there all morning "working" on personal stuff, but this cases plays over and over in my mind.  I have dug and dug the earth so to speak, all I get is confusion.  Hey Jimi, you can say it better than I can...

There must be some kind of way out of here
Said the joker to the thief
Theres too much confusion
I cant get no relief
Businessman they drink my wine
Plow men dig my earth
None will level on the line
Nobody of it is worth
Hey hey

No reason to get excited
The thief he kindly spoke
There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke but uh
But you and I weve been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now

Janet

The behaviors concerning autism are often times associated with the lack of communication or sensory issues. With Aspergers the behaviors most times stem from a lack of social understanding and acceptance in the world. there are many interventions to help an autistic individual learn coping skills.

Autism spectrum Disorders is an umbrella term which includes categories which are, pddnos, autism, asperger's syndrome, rhett syndrome and others. ASD has 4 subcategories, communication, behavior, sensory and social. Each subcategory can have a different range of severity. Each person with autism is different and no two cases are identical. A person is diagnosed as having ASD within a range from mild to severe. Example: Moderate Autism with sever social and sensory and mild communication and behavior, (my son). A boy I worked with had Severe Aspergers syndrome with sever social and sensory and mild behavior. Two completely different children though they had similar ranges of subcategories. The boy with AS had a high IQ, my son does not. My son is somewhat disengaged from the world around him, this boy tried so hard to talk with people. He liked adults more then children though as my son does.
My son although he is a very loving boy and loves his mama, step dad and brothers is on meds for behaviors. The behaviors with autism can be very difficult to deal with if there are no interventions being used, I don't want to give a false sense of what parents can go through.

Kat  ADHD is seen in autism. My son has a dual diagnoses as do many other children although it is sometimes referred to as repetitive. A straight case of ADHD is so hard for both parents and the child. There are so many different drugs and natural remedies which can help these kids though. I recently had an employee with an adult case of ADHD and was unmediated, man oh man it was very trying to say the least. As an employer I couldn't talk with him about getting help but I wanted to. He ended up not showing up for a shift and lost his job, which had happened to him so many times before .

Janet~  I understand.  Although my nephew tends to have a sunny dispostion, I in no way intend for anyone to think raising him is a piece of cake.  It is a lot of work for his family.  And it is hard for them, and I know it takes it's toll in many ways.  I just didn't want anyone to think the description in answers@yahoo.com fit ALL children with autism.  I have a son with Tourette's Syndrome and severe ADHD, so I have a pretty good idea of the difficulties that can be encountered as a parent of a child with disabilities.  And then there is my other son who has  also neurological problems.   You may meet a child with autism, but that does not mean the next child you meet with autism will be the same.  It's like saying you've met a blonde child and so you know how all blonde children are.  That is the only way I can put it.  Yes, there are certain things you will find that are similar, but level of severity and etc. can vary greatly.  For instance, sometimes when people learn that my son has Tourette's Syndrome, they ask about the cursing.  My son doesn't have that tic.  Very few do.  But it's become popularized, because of tv and movies.  Dont' assume all people with Tourette's curse.  Just like I would not assume all people with autism are angry.  But the way that article posted reads, it would seem so.  I volunteer in the schools for students and their parents to help teachers, admin and even other students have a better understanding of some of the things we are talking about here.  I have no formal training, but a lot of experience and time spent working with my own family over the years.  I took my youngest child to Texas Children's Hospital at age 2 1/2, because he was so hyperactive, I couldn't hold him or make eye contact with him.  He climbed the front of book cases, unlocked windows, pushed out screens and escaped at 18 mo.  We screwed all the windows shut, doors  had keyed dead bolts.  He never napped and seldom slept.    He pulled over an aquarium, a tv set, and we had no lamps in the living room, because he kept pushing them over.  And none of this was a result of poor parental supervision.   He slept on a simple mattress, no bed.  I had to take him into the bathroom with me when his dad would go to work, because I couldn't take my eyes off him.  Not safe. I had one other older child, and my full time job was looking after my very busy son-24/7.  I had a social worker come and observe how to help my son.  We put a square of masking tape  in an area on the floor around a little table in the kitchen and the goal was to have my son stay in that area while he ate.  He was three years old, and didn't even sit down to eat.   I know what having children with disabilities can be like. That son started college this week, and even though he is 18, he still needs services from the office of disabilities.  He is also learning to drive this summer.  15 years ago, I never would have thought it possible he could be in college and get a driver's license, let alone attend public school, which he did. When we were able to start medication, and with the help of Early Childhood education, his pedi neurologists, specialists etc., we made headway.  Still, it was constant work.   So yeah, I would say I'm familiar with what some go through.  I didn't mention the work it took for speech, his dysgraphia, not to mention the work put in to help him socialize.   It's not only children that bully or make fun of children with disabilities.  It's about educating people.   I forgot to add-my son has a very sunny disposition, but anger issues can be a problem with some that have Tourette Syndrome.

I guess it's hard when you are a parent of a child with disabilities and you get judged and your child gets judged by some that don't understand.  My nephew (the one that is usually very happy) can also get very vocal and start hand flapping and upset in public when he's had too much stimulation.  His mom gets "the look" from others, comments telling her to shut the kid up etc.  They think he is just a spoiled brat.  That has an effect on ALL of his family.  When he was younger, it wasn't so noticeable. But as he grows up and he's now 7 years old, people see a seven year old and expect his behavior to be that of a seven year old.  He's much more like about four.  I wonder if this is how it might be with Lindsey's brother.

Muffybee you know what I mean when I say I have not had a sound nights sleep in many years. I sleep with one eye open, lol. Even when my son is visiting his dad which is about 2 times per year, I still can't sleep because I worry if they are watching him. I fear one day I will be on this board regarding my son who is lost, god for bid.
BTW so many people ask if my son can draw really well, play an instrument or count toothpicks, lol...He can't for anyone reading this and is wondering.

DD I know what you mean. I was laying in bed thinking about this case too. There is no information, nothing and what we do have doesn't make much sense such as the sent dogs. Very frustrating.

Thank you so much for sharing.

Could it be that anger issues that tend to be a common characteristic throughout the spectrum of autism ... may be the result of a lifetime of others reacting negatively toward the differences and ... not necessarily a result of the disorder?

The network of parents with autistic children that my co-worker's sister and BIL are a part ... relate that often the acting out in anger becomes a more serious concern as their children age.

Thank you again for sharing.

Its hard to do but I just block out everything around me when he is melting down in public. My son is 12 years old and his disability surely is more obvious at this age then when he was younger. I am finding though people sort of "get it" because you can tell something is going on, although so many people have no idea what it is. children his age are the biggest problems...Let me say this, if anyone dared to spit on my son or tried to anger him to see if he blew up, I would have those children charged with assault faster then they could run from me. The parents would also have so very serious explaining to do as to why their children are that way.
It really bothers me a great deal to read what Josh goes through. I don't know if he is special needs, I don't know him or cannot speak to the mom, but it does make me wonder if the kids in that town are like that, then what on earth are they capable of? The comment left on the school site about the effects of disabled student on the general ed population...WTH??? Is this the attitude of the people there?

Most of us know nothing about these childhood disorders / conditions unless we have one close to us. Same with the other diseases people have.
If Josh was medicated, then there had been a diagnosis. Maybe not the correct one, but a diagnosis.
The one I was speaking of, it was the school when the kid started that got the ball rolling. It's been years and yet there is the hope that with the right type of meds and home environment that he will outgrow some of it and be an adult that has a place in our society. She, the Mum does all she can and has a tremendous support system in the medical community and at the school. Lots of love, lots of structure, lots of Mumma's rules too. He is in a regular class and does well.

Janet, it is important to know that the behaviors usually stem from sensory issues. Autism is sometimes said to be a disorder of the sensory system, this is the reason for routine it is thought. Lack of communication can also play a part in behaviors. Example a person with autism which is non verbal can sometimes use behaviors as a way to communicate such as an infant would.

BBL...This subject is getting very difficult for me. maybe because I see the other side of the coin and what children with disabilities can go through in life, not just autism but other conditions. How they are judged and ridiculed as though they are 2nd class people. They are feared as though they are monsters among us. I just do not feel Josh had a hand in this at all. I was pissed beyond belief to read of what the other children in that town do to him...today I am just as pissed off and need to take a little break. If Josh has some issues, maybe Lindsey did as well. We have been told she was picked on by these other kids.

There are researchers on this forum who are more computer savy than me to locate info on those who did not knowingly have a connection to Lindsey in the two hour timeframe prior to her disappearance.

Tracygirl ... I do appreciate you sharing your story and ... I understand why you are sentive in regards to any focus being directed at Josh.  Nevertheless ... a little girl named Lindsey is missing and ... in the process of elimination ... I believe that LE should not disregard Josh as a person of interest in the investigation.

Janet~  I like that you ask questions.  Sometimes they are the HARD questions.  And you are willing to ask for and look for information and you let us know when you learn something.    I learn something new everyday here at Scared Monkeys.  What I hope to learn very soon is:  Where is Lindsey Baum?

Janet,
First off, to remind me there is a little girl missing is a bit disrespectful. Obviously I know that.  If you wish to continue to look at only the brother as you have done, well, we at least know that avenue is covered. I will be looking in directions I feel is more likely.
