Bowen searched for missing teen
Squamish girl, 17, left to go 'camping' nine days ago
James Weldon, North Shore News
Published: Wednesday, July 01, 2009
POLICE and rescue teams scoured Bowen Island on Sunday for signs of a Squamish teen who has been missing for more than a week. Seventeen-year-old Jodi Hendrickson last saw her family June 19, when she left her Squamish home to go on what she said would be a camping trip. She had been planning to return June 23 at the latest.

When, by the evening of June 24, there was still no sign of her, Hendrickson's family went to the Squamish RCMP. Their investigation revealed that the teen had in fact gone to a party on Bowen. She had last been seen at about dawn June 20. According to family members, the disappearance is completely out of character.

On Sunday, police launched a full-scale search of the island, calling in members of North Shore Rescue as well as their Coquitlam and Lions Bay counterparts. Investigators also deployed helicopters, dog teams and a police boat in the effort. By Monday afternoon, they had still found nothing.

It's Day 9 right now, and we're still not any further ahead," said Cpl. Dave Ritchie, a spokesman for the Squamish detachment. "We're still actively investigating her last sighting on Bowen Island and trying to interview as many people as we can." Ritchie said investigators had interviewed most of the partygoers, but suggested they had not had complete co-operation from the public.

"We know there are people here who have information who probably haven't fully come forward yet," he said. "We're looking for them to come forward."

Hendrickson is Caucasian, five feet three inches tall with a small build and long, dark brown hair. She was last seen wearing a black leather jacket, a black long-sleeve shirt and blue jeans.

"Everything is concentrating on Bowen Island at this point," said Ritchie. "We believe that we've covered most of the party (-goers), but we want to ensure that we have, so if anybody was at the party or was around or saw things or saw her, (please call us)."

Investigators are also asking Bowen residents to check their properties and outbuildings for anything unusual.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100.

Court ordered ex-boyfriend of missing teen to stay away from her
Squamish girl missing after a party on Bowen Island
Last Updated: Tuesday, June 30, 2009 | 6:58 PM PT Comments29Recommend47CBC News
Jodi Henrickson was last seen at a house party on June 20 on Bowen Island. (Facebook)The ex-boyfriend of 17-year-old Jodi Henrickson, missing for 10 days, was ordered by the court to stay away from her as part of his probation after he was convicted of assaulting her.

According to court documents, 20-year-old Gavin Arnott was convicted of assaulting Henrickson on April 8.

Arnott, a Bowen Island resident, was sentenced June 5 to 18 months probation, and one of the conditions was that he have no contact with Henrickson.

Henrickson, a Squamish resident, was last seen around dawn on Bowen Island after attending several house parties on June 20.

RCMP confirmed Arnott was at one of those parties but would not go into details about their interaction.

"I don't believe [police] are focusing on any one person at this time," said Squamish RCMP Cpl. Dave Ritchie.

Ritchie said more people on Bowen Island have come forward to talk to police, and residents are fully co-operating with the investigation.

Brother pleads for information
Rob Henrickson, Jodi's brother, has been putting up posters in an attempt to find his sister, and is appealing to Bowen Island residents to speak to police, even if that means calling the anonymous tip line.

"If anyone on Bowen Island knows more than they're saying, then I would like them to report it to the police... If anyone saw what my mother was going though, they would report this."

Henrickson said police need a "hint" of what is going on.

Henrickson is described as white with long, dark brown hair, a small build, approximately five-foot-three, wearing a black leather jacket, blue jeans and a black long-sleeved shirt.

The search of Bowen Island, a short ferry ride from West Vancouver, will continue on Canada Day.

The RCMP say they do not have any evidence Henrickson left the island and will continue to search for her there.

Missing teen hasn't left island, RCMP says

Bowen Island residents are asking what has happened to 17-year-old Jodi Henrickson

Ian Bailey

Vancouver — From Thursday's Globe and Mail Last updated on Thursday, Jul. 02, 2009 07:01AM EDT

For Bowen Island residents celebrating Canada Day, the troubling question was as clear as the police helicopter sweeping the skies and officers searching properties.

What has happened to 17-year-old Jodi Henrickson?

It's been 11 days since the Squamish teenager was seen at a house party on the Howe Sound island, and the RCMP have cryptically said they do not believe she has left the community with about 3,500 permanent residents, a 15-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay.

“We have 11 days of no contact, which is very out of character and unusual. We're just plugging away and working as hard as we can to get any clue or evidence,” said RCMP Corporal Dave Ritchie, who is speaking for the force.

The mystery has been the talk of the 56 square-kilometre Bowen Island.

Doug Hooper, a member of the district council, said Canada Day celebrations offered no respite from a vigorous police effort to solve it.

“It was the backdrop to the Canada Day event. There was a helicopter in the air all day, and it was clearly part of the search effort,” Mr. Hooper said.

That search has drawn the efforts of Mounties from across the Lower Mainland, and included police dogs and boats checking out creeks, shorelines and rough terrain.

Yesterday, police were focusing on properties across the island.

“Down at the Canada Day celebrations today, our community picnic, it was very much a topic of conversation and concern,” Mr. Hooper said. “It's mostly questions. There isn't a lot of answers known. There's more questions than answers.”

The RCMP are certain of only two things at this point.

Ms. Henrickson was last seen after a house party on June 20.

And Cpl. Ritchie says investigators are fairly confident that Ms. Henrickson is still on Bowen Island.

“She did not leave Bowen Island. Jodi is still on the island. That's our belief at this point,” he said.

But what exactly does that mean?

“We don't know why she has not contacted anyone, and we don't know if she has met with foul play, met with accident, medical condition or what,” he said.

Is she still alive? “We don't have any indication that she is not alive.”

By Wednesday evening, Cpl. Ritchie reported that police had not made any progress despite a day of work.

“[The searches] have all been negative,” he said.

The uncertainty has been unsettling to Ms. Henrickson's family, but also for residents of this tranquil island community, where Mr. Hooper said people have been shaken by four recent deaths – two traffic accidents, and a pair of health-related fatalities.

“The island is feeling rather emotional around how tenuous life is,” Mr. Hooper said.

Asked about Cpl. Ritchie's assertion that Ms. Henrickson is still on Bowen Island, he said “if that is, in fact, their evidence then clearly we have got a situation that is going to stay focused on Bowen until we solve it.”

Cpl. Ritchie confirmed that Ms. Henrickson complained to RCMP in Squamish in April of an assault by an ex-boyfriend, who subsequently entered a guilty plea in provincial court and was given an 18-month probation order that includes a no-contact order with her.

That man, he said, had contact with Jodi on the night of June 19 through the morning of June 20 because they were with friends at a party.

“The boyfriend has been spoken to by police on a couple of occasions,” he said, but added he could not comment on what help he might have offered.

The mystery has prompted the creation of a “Let's find Jodi Henrickson” page on Facebook, which yesterday had 809 members.

Jodi Henrickson Missing: Teen Wall of Silence Plagues Police
The 17-year old Squamish girl went missing June 20, 2009 from Bowen Island where she had gone to visit “friends.”  Her family reported her missing on June 24, 2009 when she did not return home from Bowen Island as planned. Prior to that Jodi’s family had no idea anything was wrong.

I put the words “friends” in quotation marks because through my adult eyes I question what kind of people would do nothing about another person’s absence for four whole days.  If Jodi Henrickson were indeed with friends shouldn’t they have noticed when she just disappeared... for four days?  Shouldn’t they have looked for her, called her family, called police?

Why did it take four days for anybody on Bowen Island to report Jodi Henrickson missing? Could the fact that Bowen Island is the home of Jodi’s ex-boyfriend Gavin Arnott,  an ex who was subject to a restraining order after being found guilty of assaulting her, have anything to do with the wall of silence?  Police have openly stated that they are having trouble getting Bowen Island teens to cooperate with the investigation... why?

The ex-boyfriend of 17-year-old Jodi Henrickson, missing for 10 days, was ordered by the court to stay away from her as part of his probation after he was convicted of assaulting her.

From what police have been able to gather Jodi was last seen on June 20, 2009 after party hopping on Bowen Island.  Gavin Arnott was at one of the parties and despite the restraining order against him there was some interaction between the pair.  Police have not commented on the nature of that interaction, they have only confirmed that the two were seen together.

The last known description of Jodi Henrickson was offered by police after she was reported missing, and friends have started a Facebook Group in her honor.  Ironically, Gavin Arnott is a member of that group.

By all reports there is no chance that Jodi Henrickson ran away. Police have confirmed that they have no reason to believe Jodi ever left Bowen Island.  Some residents have cooperated with investigators and many of the homes that hosted parties have been opened to investigators.  The wall of silence is not coming from the adults on Bowen Island; it is coming from the teens.

The Bowen teens are apparently harboring ill feelings over police actions in breaking up a party three weeks ago and are unwilling to talk.  The immaturity that is keeping these kids from talking is nothing short of criminal; anybody who knows anything about Jodi has no good excuse not to talk, no matter how much police annoyed them in the past.

Getting teenagers from the party to come forward could prove difficult, said local pub owner Scott Witty, explaining that another house party that was broken up by the RCMP three weeks ago led to some hard feelings. "There's a lot of mistrust between the kids and the RCMP," he said.

Jodi Henrickson disappearance still treated as missing person case

Published: July 13, 2009 4:00 PM
Updated: July 13, 2009 4:10 PM

On Monday afternoon, July 13, Cpl. Donald Southern of the Bowen Island detachment of the RCMP told the Undercurrent that there are no new leads with regard to the disappearance of 17-year-old Squamish resident Jodi Henrickson.

Henrickson was last seen between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. on June 20 in Bowen Island's Scarborough area. She was reported missing by her parents on June 24. Two major searches that have included North Shore Search and Rescue and police helicopters have been undertaken over the past three weeks.

Squamish and Bowen Island RCMP are still on the case, said Southern, but have not learned anything that has brought them closer to finding Henrickson."We are still treating this as a missing person case," he said.

Rumours that police divers were searching the Eagle Cliff area on Sunday are untrue, according to Southern.

Tips continue to come in, Southern said. Police ask that anyone with information relating to the case call 604-947-0516.

Family makes plea for help in missing teen case

Updated: Wed Jul. 01 2009 16:01:25

The Canadian Press

The RCMP admits they are baffled. Jodi Henrikson vanished almost 10 days ago after a late night house party on Bowen Island.

Jodi Henrickson has no cell phone, no job, no bank account and only had a little spending money when she left home on June 18th, telling her parents that she was going camping at Cultus Lake.

But she was last seen between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on June 20th, leaving a house party, near the Bowen Island community school.

Bowen Island is a 20 minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, a northern suburb of Vancouver.

Jodi Henrickson is a Facebook junky. After the 20th of June, all Internet communication stopped cold- which everyone who knows her says is highly unusual.

"This is not Jodi. She would have phoned somebody by now. She would [have] phoned her best friend and said, 'I'm okay.' We just need to know where she is," said Milly Fincham, a family friend.

Yesterday, North Shore Search & Rescue, and the RCMP along with their Marine and Air services, searched four specific areas and failed to find any clues.

There's no surveillance video evidence of Jodi leaving Bowen as a foot passenger, although she could have been in a vehicle- unseen. At this point, the belief is the teenager is still somewhere on Bowen.

In the middle of an interview with CTV, her cousin got a call from Jodi's mother, Nancy who said:

"We will not stop looking for you. Please come home. Call. To the young people on Bowen Island. If you know something please let us know."

Missing Squamish teen likely ran away, says ex-boyfriend's mom

While the ground search for missing Squamish teen Jodi Henrickson was scaled back Thursday, the mother of her ex-boyfriend thinks Jodi has simply run away.

“That’s something that she would have done, knowing her character,” said Lynne Fedorick, mother of Jodi’s ex-boyfriend, Gavin Arnott.

Arnott, 20, believes he was the last person to see 17-year-old Jodi before she vanished from Bowen Island on June 20.

He admits he was on probation for assaulting her and violated a court order forbidding him to see her. He denies any role in her disappearance.

“She did run away last winter when she stayed with me for three months,” Fedorick told The Province.

I think the ex had something to do with her being missing.

His mom shouldn't have said a word. Since she is talking, all that she is saying puts Jodi in a bad light, talking about her "character" and such. Sounds like she's trying to deflect attention away from her son.

canadianmonk,

I don't know much about BC but the police department and the way they are re-acting/acting leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

She could have been a car trunk on that ferry. To not look off the island, is ridiculous. They should have took whatever vehicle the boyfriend was in/using that night and forensically test it. They mentioned search dogs. Did they use cadaver dogs in their searches or just scent dogs?

I don't know much about the police in Bc other then they are RCMP...which means that it's not really a local police department.  It's run Federally not Provincally...

Here's the Wikipedia explanation

As the federal police force of Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is primarily responsible for enforcing federal and in many cases, provincial and local laws. Unlike most other federal police forces, however, it also has a major role in front-line policing throughout the country, including in provincial jurisdictions; although the provinces and territories are constitutionally responsible for law and order, eight of the ten provinces have chosen to contract most or all of their policing responsibilities to the RCMP. The force, consequently, operates under the direction of the provincial governments in regard to provincial and municipal law enforcement. The two largest provinces, Ontario and Quebec, have opted to maintain their own provincial forces; thus the Ontario Provincial Police and Sûreté du Québec are responsible for duties conducted by the RCMP in other provinces. Newfoundland joined confederation in 1949 the RCMP entered the province and absorbed the then Newfoundland Rangers and took over that area. Today the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has reclaimed some of that province to their jurisdiction. In the three territories, the RCMP serves as the sole territorial police force. Additionally, many municipalities throughout Canada contract the RCMP to serve as their police force.

The RCMP is responsible for an unusually large breadth of duties, from policing in isolated rural towns, the far north, and urban areas; providing protection services for the Monarch, Governor General, Prime Minister and other ministers of the Crown, visiting dignitaries, and diplomatic missions; enforcing federal laws, including wire fraud, counterfeiting, drug trafficking and other related matters; providing counterterrorism and domestic security; and participating in various international policing efforts. The RCMP Security Service was a specialized political intelligence and counterintelligence branch with national security responsibilities, but was replaced with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service in 1984, following revelations of illegal covert operations relating to the Quebec separatist movement.[5] Duties, conduct and operational and reporting guidelines are very specifically laid out in a detailed document known as the Commissioner's Standing Orders, or CSOs.

It seemed strange to me that they haven't looked off the island.  Considering it is an island accessible by boat, and cars.  It's really not helpful that the people who were at the party aren't helping either.

The articles I have read, say tracking dogs, police service dogs and two dogs.  Not sure what kind of dogs they would be.  I'm assuming the RCMP would have different kinds of service dogs.

Family of missing B.C. teen says shift focus from ex-boyfriend
Last Updated: Saturday, July 4, 2009 | 12:25 PM PT Comments42Recommend40CBC News
Jodi Henrickson's family handed out flyers and put up posters at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal Friday. (CBC)
The brother of a teenage girl from Squamish, B.C., who has been missing for two weeks says too much attention is being paid to her former boyfriend.

Jodi Henrickson, 17, was last seen around dawn on Bowen Island after attending several house parties on June 20. She was reported missing four days later when she failed to come home to Squamish, approximately 60 kilometres northeast of Bowen on the mainland.

One of the last people who may have seen her is her former boyfriend, Gavin Arnott, 20. He has been in the media spotlight since news broke that he was charged with assaulting Henrickson in April.

Arnott, a resident of Bowen Island, was given a conditional discharge for the assault and sentenced to 18 months probation. The conditions were that he have no contact with Henrickson, complete counselling and anger management, surrender any firearms in his possession and that he be prohibited from possessing any firearms for five years.

Police have said they are not focusing on any one person in their investigation.

Jodi Henrickson was last seen at a house party on June 20 on Bowen Island. (Facebook)On Friday, friends and family handed out flyers at the Horseshoe Bay terminal for the ferry that connects Bowen Island with the mainland.

Henrickson's brother, Rob, said he still hopes his sister ran away and will come home.

"We don't believe the media should be focusing on the ex-boyfriend here," he said. "This is a missing persons case. We want our sister home, or my sister, to come home. I think the media should be focusing more on my sister instead of the ex-boyfriend."

Arnott and his family have maintained he had nothing to do with Henrickson's disappearance, saying the assault charges have been blown out of proportion by the media.

Search for missing teen continues

By MARCUS HONDRO

It’s been more than a month since 17-year-old Squamish resident Jodi Henrickson went missing on Bowen Island, but police continue efforts to find her, says RCMP Cpl. Dave Ritchie.

Despite the time elapsed, Ritchie says he remains hopeful.

“We don’t get discouraged,” he told The Undercurrent on Tuesday. “We just keep on plugging away, plugging away until, hopefully, we find Jodi.”

Two weeks after Henrickson’s disappearance and searchers for Henrickson combed through Bowen backyards, Island rumours spread that Henrickson’s body was found in a boat.

Local RCMP Cpl. Don Southern issued denials on the rumours.

The rumours were “sourced” by investigators, Ritchie said adding they’re not helpful to the investigation.

Ritchie would not elaborate on where the rumours came from, nor on whether discovering the source contributed to the investigation.

When asked if the force was monitoring anyone connected to the parties Henrickson attended before the last reported sighting of her, Ritchie would only say police were still “...just naming Jodi in the file.”

There were other names in the file, but the case is still being treated as a missing persons file, he said, adding the primary focus continues to be on finding the missing teen.

Some of Henrickson’s family members, including brother Rob and cousin Crystal, were forced to disabling the comments section of a Facebook site dedicated to finding Jodi.

The site said that some rumours people posted were “very much in poor taste.”

The site also told visitors that the “...RCMP will contact immediate family about Jodi before anyone else, so if you don’t hear it from immediate family, it is false.”

The website marked the month anniversary of their loved one’s disappearance with a statement that the family “...remains hopeful that Jodi will be found: encouraging only positive thoughts.”

The site went on to thank people for their help and finished by saying they would “see this to a positive outcome.”

Still no sign of Squamish teen
Jodi Henrickson missing for almost six weeks

RCMP are still desperately trying to locate Squamish teenager Jodi Henrickson who has been missing for almost six weeks.

Squamish RCMP Cpl. Dave Ritchie said although there has been some headway made in the investigation, there are "no developments" at this point.

"We're still doggedly working on it and trying to locate Jodi," he said.
"All we're hoping for is to get Jodi back safe and sound."

The 17 year old was last seen around dawn on Saturday, June 20 after attending some parties on Bowen Island.

She was reported missing on June 24, the day she was expected to return to her family home in Brackendale.

Posters of the teen are in windows throughout the Sea to Sky corridor and the Lower Mainland and police are following up on reported sightings.

"We've been in several locations now," said Rithcie. "We're still concentrating on Bowen Island but we have been in other areas of the Lower Mainland."

Ritchie said they are still asking people to be vigilant.

0 Comments The Undercurrent has learned from RCMP Cpl. Dave Ritchie that there may be a news conference about the case of missing teenager, Jodi Henrickson, missing since June 20, held on Bowen Island this Saturday (Aug. 1).

The conference would likely include members of Henrickson’s family, he said. If the RCMP’s investigative team decides not to hold the news conference that morning, then it would be because the investigation “went in another direction” Cpl. Ritchie said during a telephone interview on Tuesday.

While he did say the investigation may go in the “direction” of a news conference, he would not elaborate any further about what may be discussed at the conference.

He asked The Undercurrent not to make this information public until the paper’s next date of publication (July 31).

When asked if there had been any physical searches on Bowen during the past week, and whether a number of helicopters seen flying over Bowen recently were RCMP helicopters, Ritchie said they would not be stating that any searches had been conducted by members since those conducted back in early July.

Meanwhile, lingering rumours on Bowen that there have been Bowen teens and young adults who may not have been cooperating with the police in the Henrickson file were dispelled by both Cpl. Don Southern and Ritchie.

“No idea where those rumours had come from,” Southern said Monday. “But we have gotten full cooperation all along the way from all of them.”

Later that day, Cpl. Ritchie echoed Southern’s statement, saying people have in fact shown a great deal of sympathy and offered to help.

“I can tell you that in dealing with Bowen Island people they have been cooperative and shown a lot of care and concern,” Ritchie said, noting that included the young adults at the Bowen parties on the June 20 morning Henrickson was last seen.

Cpl. Ritchie added that when searching the Island early in July they did not take help offered by Island people because some of the terrain was rough and they felt it would be easy for volunteers to injure themselves.

Cpl. Ritchie said that they are still only “naming Jodi in the file” and declined to say if there were any other people of interest in the case.

He said that the RCMP and Jodi’s family are working hard to find her.

I'm thinking the ex-bf had something to do with this. He was likely keeping tabs on her and knew exactly when to strike.

I hope she is found soon.

The parents of a 17-year-old who disappeared on Bowen Island nearly six weeks ago urged the public to keep looking for their daughter Saturday.

Bob and Nancy Henrickson, along with Bowen Island RCMP, held a press conference Saturday to dispel rumors about their missing daughter, Jodi Henrickson, and to keep the hope alive that she will be found safe and sound.

"We feel she's still on this island somewhere, so we're out here again to let people know we're looking for Jodi. She's missing and we need to find her," said Nancy Henrickson in a transcript of the news conference.

Jodi Henrickson was last seen during the early hours of June 20 after attending a house party on Bowen Island. She was last seen with her ex-boyfriend and wasn't reported missing until June 24.

Police have been working tirelessly on the case, but are getting frustrated said Cpl. Dave Ritchie.

"They feel Jodi is here, but they haven't located her. It's very hard investigating it when you can't find her," he said.

But the teen's parents haven't given up hope. They believe their daughter is out there, waiting to be found, possibly being held against her will.

"Jodi if you're out there and you can hear me sweetie, come home," said Bob Henrickson in the transcript. "If you're with somebody, be strong. We are looking for you sweetie and we are going to find you."

Jodi's parents also dispelled rumors that the teen ran away on a ferry or had died.

"We do not feel she's a runaway," Nancy Henrickson said. "I don't have a feeling that she's passed. I believe she's being held against her will out here somewhere, because she would have got in contact with us."

The couple urged anyone who may know anything about Jodi's disappearance to come forward.

Police are still investigating whether Jodi disappeared willingly or if foul play was involved.

Ritchie said the family has been told that homicide is a possibility.

Ex-boyfriend of missing B.C. teen speaks out

Updated: Sat Aug. 01 2009 19:32:37

As police continue their search for Jody Henrickson, the missing teen from Squamish, B.C. who hasn't been seen since she left a house party on Bowen Island six weeks ago, her ex-boyfriend has spoken to CTV News for the first time.

Six weeks after his ex-girlfriend disappeared, Gavin Arnott spoke to CTV News about Jody Henrickson, the 17-year-old from Squamish, B.C. August 1st, 2009.

During an interview in his father's home on Bowen Island, Gavin Arnott said the last time he saw Jody, the two were arguing on the side of the road.

"We were sitting, she wanted to have a rest, and then she wanted me to get my dad's truck and I wasn't into doing that,'' said Arnott.

"I got up from where we were sitting and I walked to where we were going, which is about 300 meters away," he said. "I guess she walked off. I walked off without looking back."

Arnott has been interrogated by police, who have also searched his father's Bowen Island property.

Arnott told CTV News that Jody asked him to run away. He says he thinks that Jody left the island, possibly in a car or a water taxi.

But BC Ferries video revealed she did not walk onto the ferry, and police believe the missing teen is still on the island.

Meanwhile, with no sign of Jody since she disappeared on June 20th, Henrickson's parents were told on Saturday to prepare for the worst.

"The family has been told there is a possibility it is a homicide, foul play is involved,'' said Cpl. Dave Ritchie of Squamish RCMP.

"I wake up every morning not knowing where she is,'' added Jody's mother Nancy Henrickson.

For his part, Arnott said being in the spotlight doesn't bother him.

"That doesn't bug me at all,'' he said.

"It's just the fact Jody is missing that bugs me and totally worries me,'' he said. "I know she is smart, but I'm still worried that no one has heard anything from her.''

Arnott says the possibility that Jody may have been the victim of a homicide is something that he doesn't want to think about.

"I don't even know what to think, I don't even want to think about it, it's one of the last things I want to consider happening,'' he said.
