African Colonialism and Barack Obama?

Barack Obama Sr. was an African colonial to the core; in his case, the apple did not fall far from the tree. All of the telltale signs of Obama's African colonialist attitudes are on full display in the book -- from his feigned antipathy towards Europeans to his view of African tribal associations as distracting elements that get in the way of "progress".  (On p. 308 of Dreams From My Father, Obama says that African tribes should be viewed as an "ancient loyalties".)

Like imperialists of Old World Europe, the ACP sees their constituents not as free thinking individuals who best know how to go about achieving and creating their own means for success. Instead, the ACP sees his constituents as a flock of ignorant sheep that need to be led -- oftentimes to their own slaughter.

Like the European imperialist who spawned him, the ACP is a destroyer of all forms of democracy.

Here are a few examples of what the British did in order to create (in 1914) what is now called Nigeria and what Obama is doing to you: 

Convince the people that "clinging" to any aspect of their cultural (tribal) identity or history is bad and regresses the process of "unity". British Imperialists deeply feared people who were loyal to anything other than the state. "Tribalism" made the imperialists have to work harder to get people to just fall in line. Imperialists pitted tribes against each other in order to create chaos that they then blamed on ethnic rivalry. Today many "educated" Nigerians, having believed that their traditions were irrelevant, remain completely ignorant of their ancestry and the history of their own tribes.
 
Confiscate the wealth and resources of the area that you govern by any means necessary in order to redistribute wealth. The British used this tactic to present themselves as empathetic and benevolent leaders who wanted everyone to have a "fair shake". Imperialists are not interested in equality for all. They are interested in controlling all.   

Convince the masses that your upper-crust university education naturally puts you on an intellectual plane from which to understand everything even when you understand nothing. Imperialists were able to convince the people that their elite university educations allowed them to understand what Africa needed. Many of today's Nigerians-having followed that lead-hold all sorts of degrees and certificates-but what good are they if you can't find a job?
 
Lie to the people and tell them that progress is being made even though things are clearly becoming worse.  One thing that the British forgot to mention to their Nigerian constituents was that one day, the resources that were being used to engineer "progress" (which the British had confiscated from the Africans to begin with!) would eventually run out. After WWII, Western Europe could no longer afford to hold on to their African colonies. So all of the counterfeit countries that the Europeans created were then left high-and-dry to fend for themselves. This was the main reason behind the African independence movements of the1950 and 60's. What will a post-Obama America look like?

Use every available media outlet to perpetuate the belief that you and your followers are the enlightened ones-and that those who refuse to support you are just barbaric, uncivilized, ignorant curmudgeons.  This speaks for itself.

America, don't be fooled. The Igbos were once made up of a confederacy of clans that ascribed to various forms of democratic government. They took their eyes off the ball and before they knew it, the British were upon them. Also, understand this: the African colonial who is given too much political power can only become one thing: a despot.

Ahead of a historic visit to Africa later this week, President Obama is warning government officials there that it's time for "African leadership to take responsibility and be held accountable" for the performance of their governments.

Obama, who will become the first black U.S. president to go to sub-Saharan Africa, doled out some tough love, indicating that he was tired of "excuses" blaming failed policies on colonialism and Western countries.

In an interview with AllAfrica.com, Obama notes, "I'd say I'm probably as knowledgeable about African history as anybody who's occupied my office. And I can give you chapter and verse on why the colonial maps that were drawn helped to spur on conflict, and the terms of trade that were uneven emerging out of colonialism."

"And yet the fact is we're in 2009," he continues. "The West and the United States has not been responsible for what's happened to Zimbabwe's economy over the last 15 or 20 years. It hasn't been responsible for some of the disastrous policies that we've seen elsewhere in Africa. And I think that it's very important for African leadership to take responsibility and be held accountable."

Maybe it's time to stop blaming Bush?  Start asking why Democrats didn't warn of us the impending disaster at Fannie/Freddie?  Why didn't Rahm step up and speak out?

Maybe the Obama Czars will step up and take accountability and document their involvement with all those special tasks they have?  Obama will insist they start taking notes?

"Is Mr. Obama out of touch with the African question?"

The concept of democracy remains elitist in Africa. Africans need good health, food, education in equal proportion to participate actively in the local and national politics of their countries.

It is naïve to expect an underfed and malnourished African to participate in an election when they are frail and sick and have no hope for tomorrow.

Democracy will remain elusive if those who prescribe it have no idea what democracy means to the ordinary men and women of Africa.

It is my humble submission that Africa does not need democracy and good governance at this moment in history as per the prescription of Mr. Obama.

Africa needs to curtail spiraling poverty, widespread disease and falling literacy rates. Poverty is at the centre of what has caused so much suffering, anguish and deaths in Africans.

Election after election, nothing trickles down to the ordinary folks in villages and townships yet still the West’s obsession with human rights baffles me. Mr. Obama, who rose to the presidency on the promise and premise of a new era in governance should know better.

Sounds like the U.S.  All that money spend and all that debt...where is the help for Main Street?  Nothing for the little folks, everything for the big banks and special interest groups.

The west should champion literacy for the children in Africa because it is through education that a better future for the children and the country can be eked. Africa needs clean sources of drinking water because clean water translates to good health.

Africa needs hospitals, bridges and good roads so that farmers can easily ferry their produce to the highest paying consumer. Africa needs investment in light manufacturing jobs for urban youth dwellers. Africa needs invest in its farmers because they are the engine for Africa’s agro-based economies.

Urban areas, towns, and cities in the U.S. used to be filled with a plethora of manufacturing jobs.  Obama promises a few green jobs that may be temporary in nature.  No jobs for you America.

The so-called democratic champions are flying between Washington and Africa promoting democracy and human rights which is not translating into food and jobs. Conferences and talk-shops are not putting the real African question on the table.

Same in the U.S.  All the talk about jobs and spending and debt...not translating into jobs or prosperity.

The New Colonialism - Foreign Investors Snap Up African Farmland

Thousands of investment funds, from small to large, have recently begun applying the most basic formula in the world: Man must eat.

U.S. investment management company BlackRock, for example, has established a $200 million agriculture fund, and has earmarked $30 million for the acquisition of farmland. Renaissance Capital, a Russian investment company, has acquired more than 100,000 hectares in Ukraine. Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs have invested their money in pig breeding operations and chicken farms in China, investments that include the legal rights to farmland.

Food is becoming the new oil. Worldwide grain reserves dropped to a historic low at the beginning of 2008, and the ensuing price explosion marked a turning point, just as the oil crisis did in the 1970s. There were bread riots around the world, and 25 countries, including some of the biggest grain exporters, imposed restrictions on food exports.

Then came the second crisis of 2008, the economic crisis. Two fears - the fear of hunger and the fear of uncertainty - converged, triggering what some are already calling a second generation of colonialism.

If the Chinese and other nations seize the farmland purchased by these investment companies, will that be on the U.S. taxpayer dime?  U.S. taxpayers left holding the toxic assets/debt?  Privatize profit, socialize losses?

Hmmm...oil speculators, energy speculators, public option healthcare speculators...what is left?  Food? 

But what happens in a globalized world when colonies arise once again? What if, for example, Saudi Arabia acquires parts of Pakistan's Punjab region or Russian investors buy up half of Ukraine? And what happens when famine strikes these countries? Will the wealthy foreigners install electric fences around their fields and will armed guards escort crop shipments out of the country? Pakistan has already announced plans to deploy 100,000 members of its security forces to protect foreign-owned fields.

"When food becomes scarce, the investor needs a weak state that does not force him to abide by any rules," says Philippe Heilberg, an American businessman. A state that permits grain exports despite famines at home, that is consumed by corruption or deeply in debt, ruled by a dictatorship, racked by civil war, or sends millions of workers abroad and is dependent on these workers receiving visas and jobs.

Is this what the U.S. is being transformed into?  A weak state subject to the depravity of large global companies?
