NoRose, I am so sorry about your beloved pet.  I have only had one dog of my own.  When I got married, I left him with my Mom until my hubs and I could get a place.  He died shortly after.  My Mom said he died of a broken heart, and I believe that is so.
Always1 I believe that - One day ~many years from now .. You and He will reunite. All God's Creatures go to Heaven. xoxo Me.

Boo Monkey I have a question. Is there a pill or something besides benadryl I can give Josef for anxiety during thunderstorms? Last night about did him in, there are storms to the south and he is panting like crazy. I hate to dope him up, but it seems if there is a storm anywhere in a 30 mile radius he goes crazy. TIA JSM

You can go to your vet and get a prescription for a Xanex type medicine. The vet will know how much to give him from his weight and medical background. Some breeds are more sensitive than others. I know you don't want to dope him up but animals can really work themselves up into a tizzy and that's bad for their health too. Consult your vet for information.

Thanks Boo, I had to call this morning to the daycare and ask them to give him a benadryl. They thought I was crazy until they saw him in his cage they said dancing back and forth. They gave him one and he was fine. He was on clomacalm, but that was for separation anxiety and it didn't help. I didn't even think about asking the vet for something for him. Thanks so much. I will see him tomorrow and ask him for some pills. Last night I thought I was gonna have to give him my xanax to keep him from having a heart attack. Love you bunches Boo. TIA JSM

Boo, they prescribed ACE? whatever that is. Is that okay? I didn't think that he would need anything tonight because it was supposed to be calm weather. Do you know what that is? Will he be okay if he takes it? TIA JSM  an angelic monkey

ACE is a tranquilizer just like Xanex, it will be fine as long as you follow the directions. I'm not sure how long it takes to take effect, but if there is notice of a storm, give him is dose so he doesn't have time to work himself up into a tizzy. Here is a link on the medication so you understand more about what you are giving him.

Thanks Boo. He worked himself up so bad today and the storms didn't even hit here. They went around us. I hate doping him up, but he was about to have a heart attack. Poor baby had four benadryl's and won't wake up for a week. I will probably sleep on the floor next to him just to see if he is breathing. THANKS SO MUCH MY BOO. HUGS TO GRISSOM. TIA JSM

I know what you mean JSM, Grissom can work himself up at work if he hasn't seen me in a few hours. He gets so distressed that he's panting and his eyes are bloodshot! It's ridiculous! Better to have him a bit mellow than to blow his heart out!! You are such a good mama!

Thanks again Boo, we had those bad storms on Wednesday and they came again on Thursday and I called daycare to see if they could give him a bendadryl. The last time they said he was fine, Thursday he was clawing his cage. I hate to see him panting and freaking out. Same as you with Grissom. Thanks again for your advice I really wish I had gotten his prescription today instead of waiting. Oh well he is sleeping like a baby right now. See you in the morning Boo. Hugs from JSM and Josef.

Boxer Mix Crowned World's Ugliest Dog

POSTED: Saturday, June 27, 2009
UPDATED: 9:33 am EDT June 27, 2009
PETALUMA, Calif. -- Pabst, a toothy Boxer mixed-breed stole the show at Friday’s World’s Ugliest Dog Contest at the Marin-Sonoma Fair, defeating a former world champion Chinese crested named Rascal to take first place.

The former shelter dog fetched $1,600 in prize money, a modeling contract and a table-full of collars, leashes and toys, KTVU-TV reported.

Pabst’s victory was an upset of sorts. The awkward-appearing Chinese crested breed has dominated the contest for over seven years, and represented over half of this year’s entries.

His owner, Miles Egstad, said he named his dog for his “bitter beer face.”

The annual contest started back in 1976. This year’s judges included Jon Provost, who played Timmy on the television show “Lassie" and Karen "Doc" Halligan from “Groomer Has It,” “Dog Tales” and “Animal Rescue 911."

Boo,If you come through here,I need your opinion on a good bed for my little Taco.He is 7yrs. old and he naps a lot now.He is a Chihuahua.About 6 lbs.
He sleeps with me at night, but during the day I'd like for him to have a cozy bed.  an angelic monkey

And by the way,the recipe you listed a while back for conditioning the skin after their bath is good.

Well, there are a lot of good beds out there. You probably need something like orthopedic bedding which will help his little bones no matter what the size. Now if he gets cold easy there is a cool new bedding that is self heating! A little dachshund came into our place with it. It has that foil looking "space blanket" inside of it and uses the dogs own body heat to reflect back to the dog. Just google "self heating dog bed". Someone said they got a good deal at Walmart for theirs.

Oh gosh, I'm sitting here, crying, reading all these beautiful, and terribly sad stories about everyone's beloved pets. I only have a bird, and unfortunately, have never had a fur baby, but I am so very touched at how much your babies are loved.

JSM, your Josef is so lucky to have you as his momma. I can tell how much you love him just by your words.

NorthernRose, I am so very sorry for your loss of Max. She was a beautiful dog! And my heart breaks for you!

Hi Everyone,

I thought I would share this with the monkeys. I stumbled across this test when the "food scare" happened a few years back and it has now been posted on several reputable websites and blogs about food. Several foods have been pre-scored but it tells you exactly how to score the food that you are feeding your animals if it is not listed. I have fed my furry kids lots of different foods but never felt totally confident in what I chose. I used this information when I went on the search for a new food. Since we all want what is best for our four legged family members you might find this as interesting as I did.

BooMonkey

"How to grade your dog's food: (Some brands are done at the very bottom]

Start with a grade of 100:
1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points
2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points
3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points
4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points
5) If the same grain ingredient is used two or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewer's rice", "rice flour" are
all the same grain), subtract 5 points
6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than two
meats in the top three ingredients, subtract 3 points
7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points
8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points
9) If corn is listed in the top five ingredients, subtract 2 more points
10) If the food contains any animal fat otherthan fish oil, subtract points
11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points
12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points
13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points
14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to beef), subtract 1 point
15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point

Extra Credit:
1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points
2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points
3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points
4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points
5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points
6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points
7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points
8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points
9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points
10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point
11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point
12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one, count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "" as 2 different sources), add 1 point
13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point
14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point

94-100+ = A
86-93 = B
78-85 = C
70-77 = D
69 = F

Here are some foods that have already been scored. If you don't see your dog's food here, ask and someone will score it for you.

Dog Food scores:
Authority Harvest Baked / Score 116 A+
Bil-Jac Select / Score 68 F
Canidae / Score 112 A+
