Jury deciding fate of a Williamson County man accused of beating a child as part of potty training

By Miguel Liscano | Wednesday, July 15, 2009, 09:51 AM

The fate of a man accused of beating a toddler as part of what he told police was potty training is now in the hands of a jury.

Royal Anthony Williams, 24, is charged with injury to a child, a third degree felony punishable with up to 10 years in prison.

He’s accused of striking his girlfriend’s son Josiah Macey, then 16 months old, on his buttocks, legs and abdomen on Oct. 30 last year after he’d soiled his diaper, according to an arrest affidavit. Williams was arrested the next day after the toddler’s mother, Abbey Macey, alerted authorities of the incident.

An examination at Dell Children’s Hospital after Macey’s mother, Abbey Macey, went to authorities revealed the toddler had injuries to his left eyelid, abdomen, both legs, his right hand and wrist, buttocks and lower abdomen. The strikes did not cause serious injuries to Josiah, said Williamson County District Attorney John Bradley.

Macey captured the alleged beating on a cell phone, a recording of which was played for the jury during the trial.

“Make no mistake,” prosecutor Michael Jarrett told the jury. “This little boy was beaten.”

According to the arrest affidavit, Williams told police that he’d “spanked” Macey about 10 times since he was 14 months old, mostly as potty training.

Williams testified on Tuesday that on Oct. 30, he continued to strike Macey with a belt even though he was screaming, Starnes said. The strikes left scars on Josiahs buttocks, Starnes said.

Williams’ attorney, Brian Bernard, said his client understands that he is guilty. But, he was not attempting to seriously injure the child, Bernard said.

“He understands that he messed up,” Bernard said. “He understands that he is guilty of this offense.”

Williams is also charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault, a second- degree felony, in an unrelated case.
