Police seek help to find missing Lafayette teen
July 24, 2009

Authorities are asking for the public's help in locating a Lafayette teenager missing since Thursday afternoon.

Quinta Leathem is a 16-year-old female, about 5-foot-5 and about 274 pounds. She has brown eyes and long, dark brown hair that is typically worn in a bun.

Her disappearance is believed to be suspicious, said Lt. Tom Davidson, a detective with the Lafayette Police Department.

"She's never been out this late. She's never been a runaway," Davidson said. "It's just not her normal character, according to her family."

Leathem was last seen about 4 p.m. Thursday, apparently headed to the Tippecanoe County Public Library branch at Ivy Tech Community College.

Her family called police just before midnight when the teen did not return.

Davidson said Leathem lives near South 18th Street and County Road 350 South and typically takes a CityBus to Ivy Tech.

"She goes to the library quite frequently and uses the Internet there," he said.

Davidson said investigators were planning to meet today with library and CityBus officials.

Police issued a message this morning about the girl's disappearance to residents near Leathem's home using the "A Child is Missing" program.

Anyone with information is asked to call Lafayette police at (765) 807-1200 or the anonymous WeTip hotline at (800) 782-7463.

Scary world out there for a 16 year old. I am betting she agreed to meet someone off the internet. Just from viewing her profiles and reading a few of her comments. I am worried about her safety and praying she is found quickly.

Police say missing teen found safe

Authorities called off the search Saturday for a teenage girl missing since Thursday.

Quinta Leathem, 16, of Lafayette was found safe in Boone County, said Lt. Tom Davidson, a detective with the Lafayette Police.

He said he was notified of the girl's whereabouts at about 9:40 p.m. Saturday. He planned to drive to Boone County to pick her up and return her to her family.

Police had asked for the public's help Friday in locating Leathem, who was last seen Thursday afternoon. The disappearance was deemed suspicious because she left behind a purse with personal items.
