Woman found slain identified

Monday, July 27, 2009, 11:45 AM

Travis County officials today identified the woman found dead in her home Sunday and said her son was being sought as a “person of interest” in her death.

Travis County sheriff’s office spokesman Roger Wade said the incident is being investigated as a homicide and that 54-year-old Violetta Baczewski’s injuries were obviously not from natural causes, but that he could not comment further on the cause of death.

Baczewski, at top, was found around 1:30 p.m. at the home near Slaughter Lane and Manchaca Road after concerned relatives called authorities when they had not heard from her, Wade said.

Investigators said they are still looking for Baczewski’s son, 22-year-old Travis Wayne Baczewski, as a “person of interest.” Wade said Baczewski should be considered armed and dangerous because “we know that there are guns around that are missing” from the house in the 10300 block of Old Manchaca Road in southern Travis County

Wade said Travis Baczewski is 6 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. Baczewski may be driving a red Toyota Celica with Georgia license plates BAQ1287, or a 2002 blue Infiniti I35 with Texas Guard license plates 1G6-953.

Wade said that Violetta’s husband, Steve Baczewski, is currently on his way home from Iraq, where he had been working for a private security company for some time. Wade said investigators spoke with Steve Baczewski over the phone, but that he is not a suspect because they “know for sure he wasn’t here” at the time of his wife’s death. Steve Baczewski was a member of the Texas State Guard, but Guard officials said he is not currently on active duty.

A MySpace page with Travis Baczewski’s name says that he is a black belt in Ba ki do (a type of martial art) and works as a vehicle mechanic in the Army. The profile states: “I have done alot of unforgivable things but have always been a nice guy I’m just not a good guy.” The page includes several photos that identify both his mother and father, and he lists his location as Fort Benning, Ga.

Wade said anyone with information about Baczewski’s whereabouts should call 911, and anyone with information about the case should call Detective Paul Salo at 854-3245 or Crime Stoppers at 472-8477.

‘Person of interest’ charged with unauthorized use of vehicle

 By American-Statesman staff | Tuesday, July 28, 2009, 09:33 AM

Travis Wayne Baczewski, 22, who is a “person of interest” in the death of his mother, 54-year-old Violetta Baczewski, has been charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, Travis County sheriff’s office spokesman Roger Wade said today.

Police near the Texas-Mexico border arrested Baczewski on Monday after the U.S. Marshals Service tracked him to a hotel in Alamo, near McAllen, where he remains in custody.

He has been charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in Travis County and his bail has been set at $100,000, court records show.

Violetta Baczewski was found about 1:30 p.m. Sunday at her home near Slaughter Lane and Manchaca Road after relatives called authorities because they had not heard from her for some time, Wade said. Her death is being investigating as a homicide.

Travis Baczewski had visited and stayed with his mother for two weeks before telling her he was returning to an Army base, an arrest affidavit said. After he left, she noticed that guns were missing from the house and that money had been withdrawn from her bank account, according to the affidavit.

On Thursday, Violetta Baczewski received a letter saying Travis Baczewski was absent without leave from the Army, the affidavit said.

Steven Baczewski, her husband and Travis’ father, called Violetta Baczewski’s sister Sunday to check on her, the affidavit says.

The sister also hadn’t heard from Violetta Baczewski in a few days and called police when she did not answer the door, according to the affidavit. It says Violetta Baczewski’s car was at the residence but Steven Baczewski’s Blue Infiniti was missing. He told authorities no one had permission to use the vehicle, authorities said.

Travis Baczewski had been at a La Quinta Inn in Alamo since Sunday night, Sgt. Joe Robles of the San Juan Police Department said. U.S. marshal agents, with the help of the San Juan SWAT team and Alamo Police Department, were at the hotel between 1 and 6 p.m. Monday until Baczewski came out peacefully, Robles said. Baczewski was being held at the Hidalgo County Jail Monday evening, Robles said.

Travis County sheriff’s detectives are interviewing Baczewski at the jail, Wade said. He was at the hotel with his father’s blue Infiniti I35, Wade said.

Investigators in Travis County had been looking for Travis Baczewski and said that he should be considered armed and dangerous because “we know that there are guns around that are missing” from the house in the 10300 block of Old Manchaca Road in southern Travis County.

Man held in mom's death went from AWOL to hotel to jail
Police ready for shoot-out but arrest man without incident

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Sought as a person of interest in his mother's death in Austin, Travis Wayne Baczewski booked a room the night of her death at La Quinta Inn & Suites in Alamo, about a half-hour from the Texas-Mexico border.

By the next afternoon, police had evacuated the hotel and surrounded it, expecting the worst.

Knowing that the 22-year-old had gone AWOL from the Army about two weeks before, and that he'd already sold a shotgun at a local pawn shop, San Juan Police Chief Juan Gonzalez said SWAT team personnel were prepared for a possible shootout.

A chain of decisions led Baczewski to that moment, and all eyes and guns were on him, waiting for his next big decision.

On July 10, Baczewski went AWOL from his post as a Humvee mechanic with the 598th Maintenance Company at Fort Benning in Georgia, a U.S. Army spokeswoman said. He had joined the Army in 2007 and had not been deployed overseas.

Arrest documents show that after Baczewski left the post, he headed for his parents' home, a modest one-story house in southern Travis County, where his mother, Violetta , lived alone while his father, Steven, was working in Iraq for a private company.

Baczewski stayed a few days then left, telling his mom he was returning to Fort Benning, according to records.

After he was gone, Violetta Baczewski noticed guns missing from the house and money missing from her bank account; she questioned her son by phone, but he denied stealing anything, according to the arrest affidavit.

On July 23, Baczewski's mother received a letter from the Army; her son had gone AWOL, she learned. She shared the news with her husband and sister.

Three days later, Steven Baczewski became concerned after he couldn't reach his wife. He contacted her sister, who went to the house but got no answer at the door. Noticing that Steven Baczewski's car was no longer in the garage, Maurine Mercer called the Travis County sheriff's office. Deputies found Violetta Baczewski, 54, dead inside the house Sunday afternoon, according to the affidavit. Officials have declined to say how she died, but her death is being investigated as a homicide.

By the time his mother's body was found, Travis Baczewski was gone. Earlier that day, surveillance cameras had caught him filling up his dad's Infiniti at an Exxon gas station at Slaughter Lane and Manchaca Road, which is near the house, just after 4:30 a.m. He was using his mother's credit card, according to arrest documents.

Later that day, using his name, Travis Baczewski checked into a first-floor room with windows facing the parking lot at La Quinta Inn & Suites in Alamo, a town in Hidalgo County near the Texas-Mexico border.

By this time, Travis County sheriff's officials had contacted the U.S. Marshals' Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, whose marshals tracked Baczewski to the hotel.

With confirmation from La Quinta management that Baczewski and the Infiniti were on the premises, U.S. marshals from McAllen, Alamo police officers and the SWAT team from the neighboring San Juan Police Department began surveillance late Monday morning as they waited for hotel guests to check out.

Police watched for hours as Baczewski occasionally peeked through the curtains and propped the door open to go down the hall to smoke cigarettes outside, conducting surveillance of his own, Gonzalez said.

When it became clear Baczewski knew they were out there — one clue was he'd stopped going out for smoke breaks — a SWAT team negotiator called his room, beginning what's typically the most dangerous part of negotiations, Gonzalez said.

"Once he found out the SWAT team had secured the building and the chopper was up in the air — that's the most vulnerable time for us," Gonzalez said. "That's where we've got to be on our A-game."

At first, Baczewski denied stealing his dad's car, Gonzalez said — at this point, police had issued an arrest warrant for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a state jail felony.

Gonzalez said the conversation could have gone either way at that point, and one of the fears was that Baczewski would take his life.

But none of those worst-case scenarios happened.

Within a minute and a half of talking with the negotiator, Baczewski's demeanor changed and he agreed to come out of the hotel.

"He felt that the world came crashing down on him; he knew he had no choice," Gonzalez said.

Police waited in the hallway outside the room, their weapons raised and ready, said Hector Gomez of the U.S. Marshals.

Baczewski was unarmed and submitted to officers' orders, and was arrested, Gomez said. On Tuesday night, he was en route to Travis County from the Hidalgo County Jail. His bail was set at $100,000.

Travis County officials spent Tuesday traveling to Hidalgo County to get a search warrant for Baczewski's hotel room and the Infiniti, spokesman Roger Wade said. No additional charges had been filed as of Tuesday evening.

Police: Son shot mom in head, stole valuables
Travis Wayne Baczewski, 22, was charged with capital murder in the death of his mother.

Violetta Baczewski was found dead Sunday.
An AWOL soldier who drove to the Texas-Mexico border the day his mother was killed in Travis County was charged with capital murder Wednesday.

According to an arrest affidavit, Travis Wayne Baczewski, 22, shot Violetta Baczewski once in the head Sunday morning while she slept at her home on Old Manchaca Road in southern Travis County.

A bullet was found in the pillow directly below her head, according to the affidavit, filed by the Travis County sheriff's office.

Baczewski, 54, was found in her bed Sunday afternoon by deputies after her sister had called police when no one answered the door. Baczewski's husband, Steven, was in Iraq working for a private company and hadn't been able to reach his wife Sunday by phone.

The affidavit said that on July 23, Violetta Baczewski had received a letter from the Army stating that her son was AWOL — not on leave, as he had told her — from Fort Benning, Ga., where he was a Humvee mechanic.

After her son had visited the weekend of July 11, she had noticed money missing from her checking account and guns missing from her home, according to documents.

When she noticed that the items were missing and called her son, he denied taking anything, authorities said.

Sheriff's investigators say Travis Baczewski entered his parents' home at some point Saturday night or Sunday morning, shot his mother and stole his parents' 42-inch plasma television, several pieces of women's jewelry, guns and debit and credit cards.

Baczewski left the house in his father's Infiniti and checked into a hotel in Alamo, near McAllen in the Rio Grande Valley, according to police.

Police found the TV and jewelry in the Infiniti outside the hotel when they arrested Baczewski on Monday evening.

The guns had been pawned in McAllen and Laredo, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit said police also found a receipt for men's clothing in the car from an Academy sporting goods store in McAllen.

Baczewski was booked into the Hidalgo County Jail on Monday and transferred to the Travis County Jail on Wednesday morning.

Baczewski told police he wouldn't talk without an attorney present.

Jackie Vega
TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) - Almost a year after authorities charged a 22-year-old AWOL soldier with capital murder in the death of his mother, Travis Baczewski made a plea deal Friday morning.

The plea deal bargained for 50 years in prison, where Baczewski pleaded guilty to felony murder - rather than the initial capital murder charge he faced. The robbery and unauthoritzed motor vehicle charges were subsequently dismissed.

Family members were given a chance to address Baczewski in front of the packed courtroom and the statements expressed everything from love to disgust.

His aunt called him a "disgusting coward" and said "when you shot your mother, you shot your whole family."
