20-Year-Old College Student Missing in Chicago

CHICAGO —  Police in Chicago are seeking help from the public to find a 20-year-old college student who went missing this week.

Jesse Ross was last seen at the Sheraton Hotel on Water Street in Chicago in the early morning hours of Nov. 21. He was registered at the Sheraton Hotel on Rush Street, but never returned for his scheduled departure with fellow students.

Ross is a senior at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. He and others from his school were in town for a mock United Nations conference, reported CBS 2 Chicago.

There were a number of parties in the hotel after Monday's seminar, and police spoke to a number of people who say Ross was most likely drinking, according to CBS 2. Police think Ross disappeared around 2 a.m.

Police Have No Leads On Missing College Student

(CBS) CHICAGO Chicago Police have no leads this morning on the disappearance of a 20-year-old college student from Missouri, who has been missing since last Tuesday.

As CBS 2's Mike Parker reports, Jesse Ross was last seen at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, at 630 N. Rush St. Sometime early Tuesday, he dropped out of sight.

A surveillance photo of Ross was taken at the Four Points Sheraton just before 1 a.m. Tuesday. What happened after that is a mystery.

Ross was in town with a group of college students attending a mock United Nations convention at another hotel, the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers, at 301 E. North Water St. near Columbus Drive and the Chicago River.

Police divers have been working the Chicago River near that hotel since Ross was reported missing.

"The Marine Unit's been out every day since Wednesday," said police Detective Tony Rizzo. "They've done both dives, surface searches, cadaver dogs. The physical area around both hotels has been searched."

Police reported earlier they were having a hard time finding students who may have been with him that night, and there has been no activity suggesting that someone else has his personal property.

"The cell phone's been checked," Rizzo said. "There's been no activity whatsoever since the time he was reported msising. No activity on the credit card."

"If anybody knows anything, please call the Chicago Police and keep us in your prayers," said Jesse Ross' mother, Donna Ross.

"Jesse's very, like we said, Jesse's very friendly. Any number of kids from different schools and stuff could have been with him," said his father, Donald Ross.

Ross worked at a radio station while attending University of Missouri Kansas City.

"He was the funny guy. He had a following, a lot of people liked him," said one co-worker.

Ross is 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs 140 pounds, and has red hair and freckles. He may be wearing a green warm-up jacket, a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

This case comes almost a year after a 31-year-old Massachusetts man visiting Chicago on business disappeared in the same general area. The body of that man, Matthew Soumakis, was found floating in the Chicago River near Goose Island two weeks later.

The distance between the two hotels is about half a mile so he could have tried walking back to the other hotel.  The area between the two hotels is pretty "touristy" so I would expect that there were other people on the street at that time.

There are several routes he could have taken.  I suppose he could have gotten lost, but I would suspect that he wouldn't have headed south because the hotel he was last spotted at is just north of the Chicago River.  He should have remembered if he crossed the river or not on his way to the hotel.  The route between the hotels would not have crossed the river.

And Lake Michigan is not too far East of that hotel.  Once he saw the lake, he should know to turn around and head the other way.

All of this is assuming that he got lost.  I suppose he could have accidentally fallen into the river or Lake Michigan.

One more thing...  For anyone who hasn't been to Chicago, most of the streets in Chicago are really one story above the river level.  Its not like you can walk right down to the water.  There's usually railings, so even if you were drunk it would be pretty hard to fall into the river.

There are a lot of double-decker streets near the river.  There's Upper Wacker Drive and Lower Wacker drive, one on top of the other.  The entrances to buildings are on the "upper" streets.

University of Missouri-Kansas City students will offer a reward for information that leads to finding Jesse Ross, a sophomore who has been missing for two weeks.

Ross, also known as “Opie” to listeners of Kansas City radio station 95.7 The Vibe, was last seen leaving a downtown Chicago hotel Nov. 21. He was in visiting the city to participate in an American Model United Nations conference attended by 1,200 other students from around the nation and the Kansas City area.

Members of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, of which Ross is a member, will host a Hope Rally from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the University Playhouse, 51st Street and Holmes Road. Participants are asked to bring donations that would go toward a reward. Chicago police have been searching for the 19-year-old Belton man teen since he disappeared.

CHICAGO -- The family of a missing college student was in Chicago this weekend asking for help.

They were distributing flyers and T-shirts with his picture.

Jesse Ross, 20, attends the University of Missouri but was in Chicago for a conference when he disappeared.
 

He was last seen Nov. 21 at a late-night party at a downtown hotel.

"We place Jesse in God's hands, as we did when he was first born and, I think that's the best that we can do," said Donald Ross, the missing student's father.

Chicago police said Ross's cell phone and debit card have not been used since he disappeared.

CHICAGO -- The family of a missing college student is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to his return.

Jesse Ross, 19, was last seen on Nov. 21, 2006. Surveillance video shows Ross at the Sheraton Hotel on North Water Street in Chicago.

He was a student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The family said they're considering advertising to help in the search.

Successful Student Vanishes Without A Trace

Nineteen-year-old Jesse Ross was only a sophomore at the University of Missouri in Kansas City, but he lived a fast-paced life unusual for most students his age. Although Jesse was busy with his school work, he earned the acclaim of much of his Kansas City community through his internship at a local radio station. He may have only been an intern, but Jesse's personality and charisma channeled its way through the radio waves as he became a popular personality on the "Shorty and the Boyz" morning show.

Jesse had fame and it was likely he'd soon have fortune, too.

Then, the popular and successful student traveled with a group of his peers to Chicago in late November to participate in a model United Nations program. That's when things took an abrupt and unexpected turn for the worse.

Where is Jesse?

Jesse was last seen on November 21, 2006, leaving his downtown Chicago hotel early that morning. Since then, cops have combed the Windy City, looking for clues in Jesse's disappearance, but they've uncovered nothing.

Police in Jesse's hometown say he was a good kid, with no record of trouble of any kind. While there is now a void in Jesse's family, much of Kansas City feels the void, too -- his morning show colleagues and university friends are truly concerned, and want to know what's become of an engaging young man with a bright future before him.

Reward Up To $10,000 For Missing College Student
Jesse Ross Of Missouri Disappeared In Chicago In November


(AP) CHICAGO The family members of a missing 20-year-old Missouri college student are now offering a $10,000 reward for tips leading to his return.

Jesse Ross -- a sophomore at the University of Missouri-Kansas City -- vanished on Nov. 21. He was at a model United Nations conference at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel.

His family was initially offering a $5,000 reward but say the announcement has not generated much of a response.

His father Don Ross says the family's goal is to bring the 20-year-old home safely.

Police divers have used sonar to search the waters around the Michigan Avenue Bridge where Ross was last seen.

Ross is from Belton, Missouri.

Family Of Missing Missouri Student Ask Chicagoans For Help

Jesse Ross' family handed out fliers with the missing University of Missouri Kansas City student's photo Saturday in Chicago and publicized his case through a news conference with reporters.

The 19-year-old Belton native was last seen Nov. 21 leaving his downtown hotel. He was visiting Chicago for an American Model United Nations International conference.

Ross' father, brother and a family friend traveled to Chicago for Saturday's visit. The goal was to keep Ross' case in the mind of the public, so that anyone who might know something will call police.

The mysterious disappearance of Jesse Warren Ross

In this edition of "The Missing," we revisit the mysterious disappearance of Jesse Warren Ross, a 19-year-old University of Missouri sophomore who went missing in 2006.

The story of Jesse's disappearance began in Chicago, Ill., during the early morning hours of Nov. 21, 2006. Jesse was attending a mock United Nations conference at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers in Chicago, and at about 2:00 a.m. he was at a dance that was part of that event. Jesse was last seen a half-hour later when friends say he left to go back to his hotel, the Four Points Sheraton, which was located about ten minutes away. What happened to Jesse next remains a mystery. He never made it to his room, and he has not been seen since.

According to his friends, Jesse, or "Opie" as they liked to call him, is a likeable guy with no known enemies.

"We are really tight friends," an unidentified coworker of Jesse's said in a 2006 interview with Crime Library. "His internship put him in my [radio station] on day one, just to give him some insight on radio. From there he went from intern to promotions, to being on the air for our morning show as a side kick, stunt boy, kinda fun guy. He is hilarious and his humor and his intelligence put him exactly where he wanted to be."

There was initial speculation that Jesse might have been drinking prior to his disappearance and that it might have somehow played a role in what occurred; however, surveillance footage from the Sheraton Chicago Hotel gave no indication that he was intoxicated.

Police say they have interviewed more than 100 people and have invested countless man hours in the case to no avail. Lack of evidence in the case led police to suspect Jesse might have fallen into the Chicago River, as it runs right next to the hotel where he stayed; however, both police and private search groups have searched the lakefront and river several times and found nothing to indicate Jesse had fallen in.

Looking into Jesse's background, investigators have found no indication that he was planning on taking off. In addition, there has been no activity on his bank account since the date of his disappearance.

Jesse Ross is described as a white male, 5' 10" tall, 140 pounds, with red hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a green warm-up jacket, white tee shirt, blue jeans and black gym shoes. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chicago Police Department at (312) 744-8266.

BELTON, Mo. - Jesse Ross, affectionately known as Opie, disappeared while on a school trip ten years ago. Over the holidays a discovery was made in Wisconsin that's renewed hope for his family.

"This is probably the closest we've had," Don Ross, Jesse's father, said.

Don Ross is optimistic that recently discovered human remains along Lake Michigan could be of his missing son.

 
The 19-year-old vanished while attending a model UN conference with his UMKC classmates in Chicago in fall of 2006.

"The possibility of Jessie being in that lake is very strong," Don Ross said.

A father and son a few days after Christmas came across the skeletal remains that are badly decomposed.

"The remains could've just washed up recently into the rocks or they could've been there for several months and no one actually saw them," Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth told 41 Action News’ sister station WTMJ.

Don Ross has e-mailed the sheriff about his son, has alerted Chicago police and his own private investigator.

"If they determine that this is Jesse that is only the next step. It doesn't close anything we need to know: how he got in that lake and who might be responsible," Don Ross said.

As of right now they're still early in their investigation. but Sheriff Beth does believe the bones have the distinct features of an adult male.
