After Nearly 2 Weeks, New Albany Teen Still Missing

Print StoryE-mail StoryCOLUMBUS, Ohio — Police on Friday were still looking for information about a central Ohio teenager who vanished nearly two weeks ago.

Investigators said there is no evidence that Fathima Rifqa Bary, 16, is a victim of foul play, but they could not rule out that she is not in danger, 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported.

Bary, of New Albany, was last seen on July 19.

The teenager's cell phone has been turned off and her Facebook account deactivated, Kocot reported.

According to police, the girl's friends told detectives that it was possible she ran away because of conflicting religious beliefs in her home.

"If anybody is harboring her they are definitely in violation of at least one misdemeanor charge that I know of, and that's interference of custody," said Columbus police Sgt. Jerry Cupp.

Investigators said Bary is affiliated with two central Ohio churches: one on Cleveland Avenue and the other near the Ohio State University campus.

They also said Bary may have been seen near campus the night she disappeared.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call Columbus police at 614-645-4545.

Girl Who Converts to Christianity Goes Missing in Ohio

I'm not sure I have all the fact in the Fathima Rifqa Bary case. Here's some of the info I've read and have been told about.

The 16 year old girl lives in a Muslim household, but recently made some professions that she was converting to Christianity.

She was last seen on July 19th. Her facebook account has been closed and her cell phone deactivated. Her friends are worried and claim this isn't like her.

There is a missing persons report out on her, so I'm assuming that it was the family that filed the report.

There may be nothing in this related to her recent alleged conversion to Christianity. She could be just a kid that ran away from home for the normal reasons that kids run away from home. Or worse, the victim of an abduction.

But as evidenced by the reports that saw fit to mention her recent trips to churches in her community, some of her friends are worried that her going missing has something to do with her recent conversion.

If nothing else, keep an eye out for her. Here's the missing persons report at the Ohio Attorney General's webpage.

I pray that Fathima ran away and escaped this fate -- unlike Amina and Sarah who ran away and returned at the insistence of their mother, Tissie Said, only to be brutally murdered by their father Yaser Said. I hope Fathima got away, unlike Aqsa Parvez, who stayed with friends only to return home and get murdered by her father.

I pray she escaped Islam. The 16-year-old girl was converting to Christianity from Islam. She lived in a Muslim home.

Why no pleas from the family? Wonder if she has a brother? Why aren't the police looking into the family and instead saying if someone is harboring her it is a misdomeanor?

WHY, because the press is so scared of offending Muslims. I pray to God and Jesus this girl is found safe.

She is 16 years old, has not used credit cards, facebook is deleted and cell phone is turned off.

There is a comment on this article that says her parents didn't file the missing person report until July 29th....she was last seen July 19th.  I tried to find the date to which the report was filed but couldn't.

To me, that would say alot if it took a 16 year old missing girls parents 10 days to file a report

If they didn't report her missing for 10 days, they killed her. Good Lord in Heaven, if the police in Ohio are like the police here, they are not even going to look into the family because they don't want to "offend" the family because of their religious beliefs.

Please, anyone in the Greater Columbus Area, especially on Ohio State's campus keep a look out for 16 year old Fathima Rifqa Bary. She has been missing since July 19th, and her parents did not report her as missing to the police until the 29th. She is a devout Christian as she recently converted, which is probably the cause for her running away, since her family is Muslim.

She has many friends on Ohio State's campus, and there is evidence that she could have gone there. Please keep an eye out and contact the Columbus Division of Police if you see her. Her identifying feature is her blind right eye, which behaves like a lazy eye, and is often covered by her hair.
