Hearing Slated In Religious Runaway Case
Parents Want To Ban Christmas Cards From Being Sent To Bary

POSTED: 5:34 am EST December 22, 2009
UPDATED: 5:51 am EST December 22, 2009
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The teenager dubbed a "religious runaway" will be back in court on Tuesday to discuss Christmas cards.

Rifqa Bary, 17, made headlines in August when she fled from Ohio to Orlando. She claimed her Muslim father threatened to kill her after she converted to Christianity.

Authorities said her parents want to ban Christmas cards from being sent to Bary.

During the hearing, Bary's parents are expected to ask a judge to hold the teen in contempt for refusing to attend Muslim counseling sessions.
Trimm, if I'm not mistake Rilvan goes to court today as well on his MIP charge. Fine muslim he is getting caught boozing it up. Bet the family didn't bat an eye on his offense.

Rifqa Bary in contempt of court?

COLUMBUS, Ohio - According to reports, the parents of Christian convert Rifqa Bary plan to ask a judge to hold her in contempt of court for refusing to attend counseling sessions.

Both the Rifqa and her parents were to listen to each other's views about religion.

Bary has said she feared her father would harm or kill her for converting from Islam. Her father has denied the claim.

Runaway Teen Christian Convert Is Getting Her Christmas Cards

Try as they might, Rifqa Bary's parents can't keep her from reading her first Christmas cards.

The Ohio girl, who ran away to Florida because she said she feared her father would kill her for converting from Islam to Christianity — only to be sent back to Ohio by a Florida judge — remains in the care of a county children's services agency where she has been receiving "quite a lot" of Christmas cards from well-wishers across the country, according to one of her attorneys.

John Stemberger said an attorney for Bary's parents filed a motion earlier this month seeking to ban the 17-year-old from receiving outside messages, including Christmas cards. But Rifqa is receiving the cards nonetheless, he said.

"In the end, she's getting the Christmas cards," Sternberger told FoxNews.com. "They're just making sure there's no white powder or anything in them."

Bary, who will turn 18 in August, is scheduled to appear Tuesday morning in Ohio's Franklin County Juvenile Court. She may take the stand and could learn if she'll be declared an independent, paving the way for her to live as she chooses.

SLIDESHOW: Christian Convert Fears Family

"If she's declared an independent, that'd be a victory," Stemberger said. "The essence of this case is a girl who converted and is getting increased hostility from the people who should be loving her the most. It's the reason she ran."

Bary, of New Albany, Ohio, has said she feared her father would harm or kill her for converting away from Islam, a claim her father, Mohamed Bary, vigorously denies. A Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation found no credible threats to the girl.

Bary, who fled to Florida in July, was sent back to her home state last month. Police used phone and Internet records to track her to the Rev. Blake Lorenze, pastor of the Orlando, Fla.-based Global Revolution Church and whom Bary met in a prayer group on Facebook, according to authorities. Bary's phone and Internet usage are now being closely monitored, per a judge's ruling.

Attempts to reach Omar Tarazi, an attorney for Bary's parents, were unsuccessful early Tuesday. Speaking earlier to FoxNews.com, he said a court-issued gag order prevented him from discussing the hearing.
Earlier this month, Franklin County Juvenile Magistrate Mary Goodrich ordered the state to supervise Bary's telephone and Internet use at the request of the county children's services agency.

The girl's parents supported the restrictions, saying through their attorney they were concerned about her interacting with adults over the Internet.

"As you know, there's a lot of danger and concern about that with children," Tarazi said.

Kort Gatterdam, an attorney representing the girl, opposed the request, saying problems were caused by a conflict between the girl and her parents, not the Internet.

"We're making some assumptions, without evidence in the record, that she has done something improper talking to people on Facebook. There's no evidence of that," Gatterdam told the judge. "If the goal here is normalcy and reunification or whatever, this is not the way to go."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Magistrate rules that runaway doesn't have to sit down with parents

Attorney Angela M. Lloyd, left, with Fathima Rifqa Bary in court today

The magistrate in the Rifqa Bary case ruled today that the 17-year-old who ran away from her Columbus home in July does not have to sit down for mediation with her parents.

There were several issues resolved today at the hearing in Franklin County Juvenile Court, including:

    * Mediation. Magistrate Mary Goodrich said issues now being discussed would best be resolved with individual counseling instead of group mediation.
    * Third-party messages. Bary's parents don't want her to receive any cards or letters directly, and had filed a motion that any messages first go to Franklin County Children Services. Omar Tarazi, the family's attorney, withdrew that motion today.
    * Rifqa's mental health. Assistant County Prosecutor Chris Julian said that a counselor was trying to determine whether 17-year-old, whose full name is Fathima Rifqa Bary, has post-traumatic stress disorder.

In July, Rifqa ran away and moved in with two pastors -- a married couple -- in Orlando, Fla., whom she had met on the Internet.

Rifqa said her father, Mohamed Bary, had threatened to kill her for leaving Islam -- the family religion -- for Christianity.
Authorities in Florida and Ohio could find no credible threat to her safety, and she returned to Franklin County on Oct. 27 and has been living in a foster home.

A case plan that Franklin County Children Services filed recently with the court says the family should try to work out its differences, with the goal of having Rifqa move back in with her parents. But only Children Services signed the plan, which is not binding unless it becomes a court order.

The next hearing is set for Jan. 19.

TOM DODGE | DISPATCH

Mohamed and Aysha Bary, Rifqa's parents, attended yesterday's hearing. Their request for mediation with their daughter, who ran away to Florida in July, was denied.

Fathima Rifqa Bary and her parents sat in the same courtroom yesterday, about 25 feet apart.

Despite the physical proximity, a reunion between the 17-year-old Christian convert and her Muslim parents seemed miles away.

At the hearing yesterday morning in Franklin County Juvenile Court, Magistrate Mary Goodrich denied the request of parents Mohamed and Aysha Bary to undergo mediation with the girl who goes by Rifqa.

The teenager chatted with her attorneys, greeted friends and waved at a stranger who came from Florida to support her. But she avoided eye contact with her mother and father.
The Barys occasionally looked across the room at their daughter, who ran away from their Northeast Side home five months ago because she said her father threatened to kill her for the conversion.

Mr. Bary denies that, and authorities investigating the case haven't found any credible threats to her safety.

But two cases continue to make their way through court. One is a dependency case to determine where Rifqa will live, and the other considers a complaint her parents filed calling her unruly.

Goodrich said she's "99 percent sure" that mediation would not be successful and that the family's issues should be handled in counseling.

Assistant Franklin County Prosecutor Chris Julian said a counselor is trying to determine whether Rifqa has post-traumatic stress disorder.

Another issue at hand was whether Rifqa can receive cards, letters and other messages. Bloggers, Christian activists and friends have launched a campaign to send Rifqa Christmas cards.

The family's attorney, Omar Tarazi, had filed a motion asking that all third-party communication go first to Franklin County Children Services, which has custody of the teen.

But Tarazi, who has said Web sites encouraging the cards spread anti-Muslim rhetoric, withdrew that motion yesterday. He did not say why. All parties are under a gag order.
Other motions, most notably Tarazi's motion to hold Rifqa in contempt of court for not complying with counseling requirements, were continued until a hearing on Jan. 19.

During the hearing, Rifqa sat quietly and read a book while holding a wooden cross. She hugged two teenage girls waiting outside the courtroom, where about 20 supporters held hands in prayer.

A few said they had traveled from Oregon, Texas and Florida after reading about Rifqa on a blog that frequently rails against Islam and President Barack Obama.

Several said they were Christians who believe that Islam is a violent faith.

Parents End Battle To Bring Rifqa Home
Rifqa Bary Will Stay In Foster Care
POSTED: 5:33 am EST January 20, 2010
UPDATED: 8:04 am EST January 20, 2010
ORLANDO, Fla. --
The Ohio teenager who ran away from her parents after converting to Christianity will not be returned to her family.

Rifqa Bary will remain in foster care until her 18th birthday later this year, and then she'll be able to decide on her own what to do next, officials said.

Bary will not face a trial in Ohio. In a settlement, Bary's lawyer said his client and her parents love and respect each other and believe counseling is the best way to resolve their issues, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Over the summer, the once-Muslim teenager changed her religion to Christianity and moved to Florida because she said she feared her father would kill her for converting. Her parents insisted she could come home, but that never happened.

Instead, the pastor of an Orlando church, Blake Lorenz, welcomed Bary after meeting her on Facebook.
In December, Lorenz denied allegations by a colleague that he knew he was breaking the law when he helped Bary leave her parents and come to Florida. Leaders at Global Revolution Church fired Lorenz in September after he admitted to lying about his involvement in bringing the runaway to the state.

In a recorded meeting, Lorenz said he lied -- but he insisted he had not broken the law, according to the Sentinel.

Bary remains in Ohio. The church closed after members feared they would be sued by Bary's parents.

If one wishes "Credible evidence" of the danger Rifqa is in, one only need read the Koran.  It directs Muslims in every facet of life, including beheading apostates.  That is enough "Credible evidence" for any thinking person.

Muslim parents of Ohio runaway teen reject resolution plan that called for counseling
Associated Press

Last update: January 29, 2010 - 3:34 PM
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Muslim parents of an Ohio girl who ran away from home claiming she feared harm for becoming Christian have rejected a deal meant to resolve the conflict.

Mohamed and Aysha Bary of New Albany, Ohio, withdrew their consent in a court filing Thursday that alleges misrepresentation in the plan approved Jan. 19.

The Barys and their daughter, 17-year-old Rifqa Bary, had agreed she would stay in foster care and they would undergo counseling instead of going to trial to determine where the girl should live.

The Barys now allege that Franklin County Children Services are permitting Rifqa to communicate with a Florida pastor and his wife who helped her run away last summer.

A law enforcement investigation has found no credible threats to the girl.

Rifqa's attorneys want court to punish parents
Wednesday,  February 17, 2010 11:10 PM

Attorneys for Fathima Rifqa Bary want sanctions imposed on her parents and their attorney for filing what her attorneys call frivolous motions.

In a motion filed in Franklin County Juvenile Court, they also accuse Rifqa's parents of "continued attempts to intimidate and control their daughter."

All the attorneys had agreed on Jan. 19 to settle their dispute in counseling and not in court. But a week later, Omar Tarazi, attorney for Mohamed Bary and his wife, Aysha, asked the court to prohibit contact between Rifqa and Blake and Beverly Lorenz, the Florida pastors she stayed with after running away from her Columbus home in July.

Rifqa, 17, accused her father of threatening to kill her for converting from Islam to Christianity. But authorities in Florida and Ohio did not find any credible threat to her safety.

The January motion is frivolous, Rifqa's attorneys wrote, because her counselor agreed that contact between her and the Lorenzes was in her best interest.

Kort Gatterdam and Angela Lloyd, Rifqa's attorneys, want the court to order sanctions that could include making the Barys pay attorney fees, court costs and other expenses.

The attorneys also accused Tarazi of including Rifqa's private writings in their motions to make them available to the news media and embarrass her.

I see that the news articles now have her listed as 17.  Does anyone know when this poor girl's birthday is?  I assume that when she is 18 she will be able to go and do whatever she wants and her parents won't be able to stop her.

She just recently turned 17 I believe either in late summer or early fall.

Religious Runaway Case Heads Back To Court

Posted: 7:04 am EST March 2,2010
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An Ohio teenage convert who ran away to Florida, allegedly with help from Christian pastors, goes back to court in a lengthy custody dispute with her family.

Rifqa Bary and her parents were scheduled to appear Tuesday before a juvenile court judge in Columbus who thought the case had been resolved more than a month ago.

A deal between the 17-year-old girl and her parents to resolve their conflict through counseling fell apart shortly after it was struck in January.

Bary emigrated from Sri Lanka as a child with her family. She claims she would be harmed or killed for converting to Christianity.

Her parents deny the claim, and police in Columbus and Florida found no evidence she was in danger.

Yes, prayers for Rifqa.  But the Islamists have made such inroads into our state and federal governments, that they will call the shots in this.  I hope the judge protects Rifqa from the barbarians, but I doubt it because most Americans have yet to understand the nature of this enemy which is bound by "Religious" conviction to subdue all non-Muslim countries.  They have made great headway in Europe, even infiltrating the Labor Party in England.  I believe our president to be a Muslim. I believe our Attorney General to be a Muslim or, if not, to obey the orders of a Muslim.  I believe that the 9/11 conspirators will not be convicted because of deliberate statements by the President and Attorney General that they will be found guilty and executed, thereby preventing any pretense of a fair trial. God bless Rifqa, but they kill her, no doubt about it.

Teenage Muslim-to-Christian convert Rifqa Bary, who ran away to Orlando last year, is expected in an Ohio courtroom today in the latest chapter of a lengthy custody dispute.

Rifqa and her parents are scheduled to appear today before a juvenile court judge in Columbus who thought the case had been resolved more than a month ago.

A deal between the 17-year-old girl and her parents to resolve their conflict through counseling fell apart shortly after it was struck in January.

Rifqa emigrated from Sri Lanka as a child with her family. She claims she would be harmed or killed for converting to Christianity.

Her parents deny the claim, and police in Columbus and Florida found no evidence she was in danger.
