House Dems Seek Records From Health Insurers
Requests for financial information issued at a time when Obama's health care proposal is under intense attack from Republicans and other critics, including the health insurance industry.

AP

Wednesday, August 19, 2009
WASHINGTON -- Democrats on a House committee are seeking detailed financial records from dozens of large insurance companies, officials disclosed Tuesday, part of an investigation into "executive compensation and other business practices" in an industry opposed to President Barack Obama's plan to overhaul health care.

The request included records relating to compensation of highly paid employees, documents relating to companies' premium income and claims payments, and information on expenses stemming from any event held outside company facilities in the past 2 1/2 years.

The requests were made in letters signed by Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., who guided a portion of health care legislation through the House Energy and Commerce Committee last month as chairman, and Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., who heads the Energy and Commerce investigations and oversight subcommittee.

They wrote that the committee was "examining executive compensation and other business practices in the health insurance industry." The Associated Press obtained a copy.

The requests were issued at a time when Obama's health care proposal is under intense attack from Republicans and other critics, including the health insurance industry. Much of the opposition focuses on proposals for the government to sell insurance in competition with private carriers.

Obama and other supporters of a so-called government option argue it would help control costs and keep insurance companies honest by forcing them to grapple with competition.

Opponents say it gradually would undermine the present insurance structure, which is built around private insurers, and lead to a system controlled by the government.
The issue drew intense focus over the weekend, after Obama speculated aloud about the possibility that legislation might omit the government role in selling insurance.

The White House said there had been no change in position. But liberals, in particular, expressed dismay, giving rise to increased speculation that Senate Democrats could soon abandon all talk of bipartisanship and draft legislation tailored to their own rank and file. Any such measure would inevitably jettison many of the compromises crafted in weeks of bipartisan Senate talks, and it was unclear whether the talk was a ploy to persuade Senate Republicans to agree to a compromise.

A spokesman for the insurance industry declined to comment on the letter sent by Waxman and Stupak.

Nick Choate, a spokesman for Stupak, said 52 letters were sent late Monday to the nation's largest health insurers, those with $2 billion or more in annual premiums. He said letters were not sent to other industry groups, some of which have been airing television advertising in support of Obama's call for legislation.

The letter from Waxman and Stupak requested the information be provided by early September. While companies are not under legal obligation to comply, the committee could respond to a refusal by voting to subpoena the information at a later date.

Among the documents requested were records relating to compensation paid to any company executive earning more than $500,000 in any year from 2003 to 2008.

Waxman and Stupak also sought documents relating to premiums paid by policy holders, claims payments, sales expenses, administrative expenses and profits, broken down by categories such as employer-provided coverage; individual coverage, Medicare and Medicaid.

I wonder if they are looking into the records of the insurance carriers the unions carry? We were asked the other day to take a 30% reduction on a claim because the patient was a teamster and was on STRIKE and it would take a long time for them to pay the claim. This letter came from the insurance carrier, not the patient. I wanted to tell them to shove it up the union azzes, but heck 70% in 10 days is better than nothing.

Open letter to President Obama: Keep government out of health-care decisions

http://hotair.com/archives/2009/08/19/open-letter-to-president-obama-keep-government-out-of-health-care-decisions/

Read this letter. This is how it starts out on Hot Air.  an angelic monkey

"Earlier today, I received this letter from Hot Air reader and entrepreneur Catherine Wilkinson, whom I then interviewed over the telephone.  Her daughter, Molly Kate Wilkinson, met then-President George Bush in 2004 as part of a “Miracle Child” program highlighting miracles in pediatric health care.  Molly Kate has overcome hydrocephalus and a string of surgeries to now be a straight-A student in a northern Arizona college, on her way to a nursing degree and the hope of working to help other people the way others cared for her.  I’ll have more from our interview at the end of Catherine’s story, which she tells in an open letter to President Barack Obama."

I read it, and it was very interesting. Talk right now is that the dems might go ahead without the Republicans, do you think this will happen, or that the dems don't have the b_lls to do this?

I'm not real sure if they will go ahead right now without the republicans. I have read that even some of the dems are somewhat going against the whole thing unless there is a private option. Not sure what to believe right now No Rose.    Obama is a dog and pony show. The more the American people see him and Congress for what they really are, the more I think it won't happen. Who knows, I guess we will wait and see come September.

I really think that if the democrats push this through come 2010 and 2012, there will be a Republican Senate, Republican House and Republican President. Oh what a happy day that will be!

JSM,they had a replay of a video on Glen Beck today. It was Daniel Hannan speaking about health care.It was interesting. He tells it like it is.

Glenn Beck is taking a lot of push back on his outspokenness on Health Care.  I caught one of O's taking heads the other day just slam him.
That means Glenn Beck is getting to them. You go Glenn Beck. I would like to see Glenn Beck vs Chrissy Matthews in a cage fight!

Anyone asking the right questions seems to be getting to them.  I could not sleep last night and watched Glenn last night at 3:00am.  There was someone else sitting in but they played a call that the lady who stood up at one of the Town Halls and said that the health care reform goes against the Constitution made to Glenn.  She had been on Glenn's show and the next day she started receiving death threats and harassment.  She was clearly crying in the call to Glenn and said she was just a mom and housewife and could not understand why they were threatening her for standing up for what she believed in.

I guess this isn't a free country where you can ask a question anymore without being called unAmerican, a kook, or get death threats. I don't know what is going on. Of course there are people going to some of these meetings to cause trouble, but even if you aren't and want questions answered I guess you are considered a trouble maker. Thanks JSM for you answer, it would be a mistake if the dems do this alone.

(Springfield, MO) -- Her recent health care town halls have gotten national attention.  On Wednesday, Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) announced plans to talk health care in Springfield.

The Democrat has picked the Gillioz Theatre.  The town hall meeting is set for Monday, August 31 for 12:30 p.m.  No tickets are required.  It's free for anyone.

Just last week, McCaskill was frequently interrupted during a similar town hall about health care in Hillsboro, Missouri.  She admonished the crowd for being rude.  At one point a woman was escorted out of the room.

The senator is traveling across Missouri to try to answer questions about President Obama's national health care plan.
