no rose~  If you've found a bird food you like, I can see why you stick with it.  Sometimes I've tried a different brand of black oiled sunflower seed and there is a bunch inedible junk in it.    I like the safflower seed, because the squirrels don't     You know I had to grease my shepherds crook pole with vaseline to keep the squirrels from shinnying up it?   I was lucky enough to see a painted bunting twice since in the three years I've been here.  That unusual bird you saw may very well have been an escapee from somewhere...

Yes and twice now there has been a rooster just randomly walking through the neighborhood, and there is no farm around here, just kind of strange seeing that.

New Divides Emerge in Health Reform Talks
Republicans are pressing to reduce the size of tax credits for families with incomes that are below three times the poverty rate, but Democrats believe savings can be found without going to the heart of the bill.

Wall Street Journal
FOXNews.com
Saturday, August 22, 2009
WASHINGTON -- Senate Finance Committee negotiators are trying to bring down the cost of a broad health-care bill, but new splits are emerging on whether to reduce subsidies for people to buy insurance, according to Senate aides familiar with the talks.

The Finance Committee, led by three Democrats and three Republicans who make up the so-called Gang of Six negotiators, is the only committee in Congress seeking to produce a bipartisan bill.

Republicans are pressing to reduce the size of tax credits for families with incomes that are below three times the poverty rate. They would also like to trim back insurance coverage mandates in hopes of lowering premiums that would have to be subsidized.

But the three Democrats believe savings can be found without going to the heart of the bill. "There are not going to be significant changes to coverage," said one Democratic aide familiar with the talks. "We're finding other ways to bring down the cost."

Taliban Cut Off Fingers of 2 Afghan Voters

Saturday, August 22, 2009
KABUL —  Taliban militants cut off the ink-stained fingers of two Afghan voters in the militant south during the presidential election, the country's top election monitoring group said Saturday.

Two voters who had dipped their index fingers in purple ink — a fraud prevention measure — were attacked in Kandahar province shortly after voting Thursday, said Nader Nadery, the head of the Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan. Kandahar is the spiritual birthplace of the Taliban.

Rumors that militants would cut off voters' ink-stained fingers spread before the vote. A Taliban spokesman had said militants would not carry out such attacks, but the Taliban is a loose organization of individual commanders who could carry out the threat on their own.

Obama calls for 'honest debate' on health care
By DARLENE SUPERVILLE, Associated Press Writer Darlene Superville, Associated Press Writer   – 1 hr 6 mins ago

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is challenging his critics on a national health care overhaul, accusing them of making "phony claims" about the legislation.

"This is an issue of vital concern to every American, and I'm glad that so many are engaged," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address.

"But it also should be an honest debate, not one dominated by willful misrepresentations and outright distortions, spread by the very folks who would benefit the most by keeping things exactly as they are."

Obama said illegal immigrants would not be part of the health care overhaul, taxpayers would not be mandated to fund abortions and he does not intend a government takeover of health care — all claims that critics have made at contentious town hall-style meetings with members of Congress.

He also took a swipe at "death panels," an idea former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin introduced on her Facebook page.

"As every credible person who has looked into it has said, there are no so-called death panels — an offensive notion to me and to the American people," Obama said. "These are phony claims meant to divide us."

Start with a healthy breakfast. It reduces cravings later in the day.
Are you kidding, it stretches my stomach and makes me really hungry thoughout the day.
Makes me hungry all day too No Rose.

Me too.   As long as I'm fasting, I'm good.   As soon as I eat something - forget it.   Then I want to eat everything in sight.   Monkey Devil!

http://food.yahoo.com/blog/yahoofreshpicks/13805/your-food-cravings-explained-and-contained

Your Food Cravings Explained and Contained
Posted Tue, Aug 18, 2009, 11:36 am PDT
At four o'clock I feel a very specific tug. It's a chocolate tug. I try to keep a bar in my desk drawer. Plan B is the candy bowl by the Yahoo! receptionist. Plan C involves hollering from my cube to anyone who might hear. Sometimes a good friend answers with a life-saving mini Twix or individually wrapped Hershey's Krackle. What I want to know even more than who has chocolate is why do I need it so badly? Neal D. Barnard, M.D. knows. He is a nutrition researcher and the president and founder of the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). He also wrote Breaking the Food Seduction:The Hidden Reasons Behind Food Cravings.

Why we crave chocolate, sugar, cheese, and meat:
All four of these foods are addictive for the same reason. They have an opiate effect on the brain, which means they may have a calming effect that our bodies like. These opiates are produced in the brain as sugar or chocolate touch your tongue. Meat works similarly. For cheese, the opiates are actually in the dairy protein, casein. These opiates take a little longer to work their magic as they are released during the digestion.

Why we crave salty foods:
Salty foods are not really addictive; they don't have a particular effect on the brain. But people become habituated to the taste of a certain amount of salt on the taste buds, and they tend to object when given less salt.
When cravings intensify:
Cravings can strengthen in the winter. The shorter, darker days cause the body to crave sugar and starches, both of which tend to cause the brain to produce serotonin -- the mood-boosting neurotransmitter. Cravings can also get stronger for women during the week before their menstrual periods, due to the effect of shifting estrogen levels.

Want to conquer your craving?
1.  Start with a healthy breakfast. It reduces cravings later in the day.

2.  Use foods to hold blood sugar steady. This means emphasizing low-glycemic-index foods, such as beans, vegetables, fruit, and pasta to keep blood sugar from going on a roller coaster (which can be caused by white bread and sugar, for example) that can trigger changes.

3.  Dieters: Use the Rule of Ten. If you are dieting, be sure not to starve yourself, because extreme hunger triggers cravings. Eat AT LEAST 10 calories per pound of your ideal weight per day.

4.  If you crave a food every day at the same time, plan an activity, such as a walk or visit with a friend, that is inconsistent with eating.

5.  Have regular exercise and rest.

6.  Use social support. Let your family and friends know that you need help.
7.  Take advantage of other motivators. Young people can be motivated to avoid meat because of concerns about animals or the environment. A married man might avoid junk food if he remembers that he needs to stay well to take care of his family.

Thanks for posting this.   Good article.   an angelic monkey
