A spokesman for the sheriff’s department says the 71-year-old’s 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme was found Wednesday in a wooded area on Country Road 6242 at FM 1960. The car was stuck in mud and water, but the woman was not found.

Doris King was first reported missing by her husband, William King, who says he last saw his wife driving a few blocks from their Crosby home. He says she was visibly upset when she grabbed her cars keys and walked out of their home around 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

William says his wife suffers from dementia.

Precinct 3 deputy constables worked to locate the woman in the days that followed, passing out fliers and notifying media across the state. A “silver alert” was also issued for King -- an amber alert for the elderly.

According to the National Alzheimer's Association, 60 percent of people with dementia will wander away.

If they're not located with 24 hours, half will suffer serious injury or death.

Car of missing Crosby woman with Alzheimer's found

Search teams are working their way through a heavily wooded area in Liberty County after a car belonging to a missing Alzheimer's patient was discovered today on an isolated logging road, officials said.

A Texas Department of Public Safety pilot spotted Doris King's 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme about noon Wednesday while flying over County Road 6242 near FM 1960 in western Liberty County, officials said.

"They didn't find her but they found the vehicle," said Capt. Jack Hagee, with the Harris County Precinct 3 Constable's Office.

King, 71, has been missing since Thursday night when she left her Crosby home after arguing with her husband, Hagee said.

Authorities believe the car - which was stuck in the mud - had been there for at least a couple of days. They uncovered no evidence of foul play in the vehicle, Hagee said.

"We're going to search that area and flood it with people to see if we can find her," Hagee said.

A canine team with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice is part of the effort to find King.

"They're searching the area right now to see if that dog can pick up her trail,'' Hagee said.

Since King disappeared last week, Precinct 3 constables have combed the area around her Crosby home. They contacted hospitals in the area and the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office to see if they came across King or anyone matching her description, Hagee said.

Police departments throughout the Houston area and as far away as Louisiana were notified about the missing woman.

Hagee said King's husband was notified after his wife's car was discovered.

"She said, 'Give me my keys.' And I said, 'Baby, you don't need to leave,'" said William.

Doris continued to argue with William outside their Indian Shores home in Crosby. She eventually got the keys to their car and took off.

"I blame myself now for giving her the keys. I shouldn't have done it, but that's hindsight," said William. "And she's always come back before."

William tried to follow her that night, but lost sight of her car in the Crosby area. That was last Thursday night, August 6. Five days later, there is no sight of Doris or her vehicle.

However, her son worries her dementia has left her helpless.

"That's my fear. I could see her being out there and if she sleeps or something, she may wake up and not realize where she is," said Doris' son, Cliff Haddox.

A statewide Silver Alert has been issued and a search of surface streets in nearby neighborhoods has turned up nothing.

"We've contacted all of our local hospitals. We've contacted all law enforcement agencies," said Captain Jack Hagee of the Harris County Precinct 3 Constables Office.

In the meantime, William King prays his wife of more than 30 years will appear once again in their hallway.

"I just love her so much," said William.

Doris' car was discovered around midday Wednesday during a DPS flyover search. Search crews are now searching for any clues around where her car was found that might lead them to her.

If you've seen Doris or know where she is, you're asked to call Harris County Precinct 3 Constables Office.

Details on this story came to us through our partnership with Houston Community Newspapers. You can read more about it in the North Channel Sentinel.

So sad. Her family is clearly filled with guilt.

Dementia and Alzheimers are heartbreaking conditions. Not only for the person suffering from it but everyone that loves that person and especially the people who have to take care of them on a daily basis.

I am praying that the search teams can find her and keeping her family in my prayers.

Thank you for the updates! Smile

Elderly woman's car found, husband worried

08:21 PM CDT on Wednesday, August 12, 2009

khou.com staff report

LIBERTY COUNTY – Authorities have found the car of a woman who has been missing for nearly a week.  Doris King, 71, has not been seen since Friday. Her husband says she has dementia and had no cell phone when she drove off in a 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass bearing Texas plate MCY 785.

According to her husband, they had an argument, she got frustrated which is common with dementia, and drove off. He tried to follow her, but lost her on the way. They have been married for 35 years.

On Wednesday, the woman's car was found in a wooded area off of FM 1960 and County Road 6242 in Liberty County. This is just north of where she lives.

Doris King, 71, has been missing since Friday.

Police say she was not in the vehicle. They are currently searching the woods with dogs.

King is 5 feet, 2 inches tall, weighs 125 pounds and has gray hair.

If you've seen her, call police.

******************************

I had hoped the searchers would find her with the dogs today, after her car was located.  It's dark now, and I've checked the news and nothing new.  I hope she's found soon.

What Is the Silver
Alert?

Updated: Wednesday, 12 Aug 2009, 10:00 PM CDT
Published : Wednesday, 12 Aug 2009, 9:59 PM CDT

    * ISIAH CAREY

HOUSTON - The disappearance of Doris King in Liberty County last week has turned the spotlight on the Silver Alert system.

The public notification system has been activated 102 times in Texas since going live back in 2007.

Tela Mange with the Texas Department of Public Safety says of the 102 seniors who have gone missing since the alert began 91 have been found alive. Another 7 were located deceased.

The alert is activated when a person who is 65 or older disappears. That person also has to have a medically diagnosed mental issue.

It's the same system used in the recent disappearance of Doris King. Police found her car on Wednesday, but she remains missing.

Missing woman found dead
Thursday, August 13, 2009 | 10:12 AM

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A search for a missing 71-year-old Crosby woman has come to a sad conclusion. Her body was found near where authorities located her vehicle yesterday.

Doris Ann King, 71, was last seen on August 6 in the Crosby area. On Wednesday a search located King's abandoned white 1993 Oldsmobile in a field near FM 1960 and County Road 623 outside of Huffman. Authorities finally located her body about a mile away from her car.

Family members say King suffered from dementia, and they had grown concerned she would become confused while driving.

Doris' husband, William, describes their last conversation before she went missing.

"I could see her being out there and if she sleeps or something, she may wake up and not realize where she is," said Doris' son, Cliff Haddox.

Deputies have reportedly confirmed the body is that of King. Authorities say it appears she died of natural causes.
