By Arthur Raymond, Deseret News
Published: Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009 11:35 p.m. MDT

Cache County authorities are seeking the public's help in locating a Las Vegas woman missing since Thursday.

Andrea Celina Roye, 18, was reported missing in the Green Canyon area north of Logan Aug. 6 by her boyfriend. An initial search was temporarily suspended when officials learned she was prepared for overnight camping. That search resumed Saturday and continued Sunday with the aid of a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter, Cache County Search and Rescue and sheriff's deputies.

Roye is accompanied by her dog, Gerome, and is described as 5 foot 7, 120 pounds, blue eyes and dyed-green hair.

The Cache County Sheriff's department asks that anyone who has seen or knows of the whereabouts of Roye call their dispatch line at 435-716-9400.

UPDATE: Search scaled back for missing 18-year old in Green Canyon
By Staff and wire reports

Story Created: Aug 9, 2009 at 12:17 PM MDT
Story Updated: Aug 10, 2009 at 6:09 PM MDT

NORTH LOGAN, Utah (AP) - Authorities have again scaled back their search for a woman who went hiking in Green Canyon.

Cache County sheriff's Lt. Matt Bilodeau said Monday authorities believe Andrea Celina Roye simply went hiking and is not in any danger.

Bilodeau says he's hoping for confirmation from other hikers and campers that they have seen the 18-year-old woman, of Henderson, Nev.

The sheriff's office had stopped searching for Roye on Friday but resumed the search Saturday because wet, chilly weather made being outside overnight more dangerous. But Bilodeau says overnight temperatures are expected to climb to the 50s.

Roye's boyfriend reported her missing on Thursday after she didn't return from the canyon at the expected time.

--

The search involved the resources of the Cache County Sheriff's Office, Search and Rescue Mounted Posse and the Department of Public Safety Helicopter.

The search was initiated Thursday by the boyfriend of the subject missing at about 11:30 a.m. Based on information received later that day the search was susended for a short time Friday but it continued Saturday morning and is still underway.

The Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help if you have any information abut the subject or have had any contact with her. Andrea Celina Roye is described as being a white female, 5-feet, 7-inches tall, 120 pounds, blue eyes, dyed green hair and believed to be in the company of her dog Gerome (jer-o-mie).

Sheriff's officials say they are also investigating this missing person's case online, monitoring communications on social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace to see if any information is posted as to Roye's whereabouts.

Anyone with information about the missing woman is asked to call Sheriffs Lt. Matt Bilodeau at 881-0228

Crews searching for missing woman near Logan
August 9th, 2009 @ 9:27pm

LOGAN -- Searchers combed through a wide area of wilderness east of Logan all weekend and found no trace of an 18-year-girl who was long overdue on a hike.

Searchers used dogs, helicopters, horses and vehicles to no avail. She went into the mountains with her dog Wednesday, prepared for a hike that was supposed to last two or three days.

Friends of Andrea Celina Roye told investigators she has green hair and was probably dressed just as she appears in the picture.

Cache County sheriff's Lt. Matt Bilodeau said, "They stated that she wanted to be up here and be one with the wilderness and she wanted to be away from people. They were telling us she doesn't want to be found, and so, she might be hiding from us. It's wilderness and it's tough. If you don't want to be found, or if you're in a place that can't be easily see from the air, you're gonna not be found."

The search is expected to resume Monday.

This is my sister and if anyone sees her please call the police. We just want to know that she is ok. The dog might be wearing a tag that says "Forest" instead of "Gerome". Thank you for your help!

If she set off on Wednesday prepared for a two or three day hike, why did her boyfriend report her missing on Thursday? That makes no sense.

Henderson woman missing in Utah forest

Posted: Aug 11, 2009 01:56 AM

A Henderson woman is pleading for her teenage daughter to come home.

18-year old Andrea Celina Roye went on a hike in Utah on Thursday. She told her boyfriend she wanted to spend the night in the woods, but the next day she never returned.

Authorities searched north Utah's Green Canyon and found plenty of hikers who had met the young woman. Authorities don't believe she is in danger because she is hiking in an area popular with hikers and she has not reached out for help. And since she is an adult, and can make her own decision, authorities are scaling back the search.

But Andrea's mother, Janice, sees it differently. She says her daughter does not have the necessary survival skills to stay in the wilderness. She is pleading with authorities to keep up the search to find her daughter.

Search continuing for 18-year-old woman on smaller scale
By Staff and wire reports

Story Updated: Aug 11, 2009 at 8:36 PM MDT
Authorities are continuing their search for 18-year-old Celina Roye in the Northern Utah mountains, however they are doing so on a smaller scale than when the search started last week.

"After conducting an investigation we believe at this time she is in the Cache National Forest by her own free will and choice," a statement released Monday by the Cache County Sheriff's Office reads. "We do not at this time have any evidence that she has been hurt or is in harm's way."

Sheriff's officials say Roye, who is from the Las Vegas area, is not lost and there's a credible witness that has placed her at the Tony Grove campground on Thursday eating a plate of food.

"We have continued the search at this time, but at a lower level than it was over the weekend," said Cache County Sheriff's Lt. Matt Bilodeau. "We are still asking the public's help in locating her so that her family and friends can be assured that it's what she wants to do and that is where she wants to be."

Bilodeau said Tuesday evening that he had nine searchers in the canyon at that time and earlier had four-wheelers and horses out looking. The search had to be scaled back, however.

"We just can't sustain 40 volunteer searchers for days on end," Bilodeau wrote in an e-mail to KVNU. "She has been seen in the Tony Grove area getting food from campers there."

Anyone with information or questions can contact Bilodeau at 881-0228.

Sheriff's officials meet with family of missing woman; mother 'adamant' search continues - By Tyler Riggs
Aug 13, 2009 at 2:03 PM MDT

Cache County Sheriff's officials met Thursday with family members of the 18-year-old woman who is missing in the Northern Utah mountains.

The mother and brother of Nevada resident Celina Roye are in Logan today and met with search officials Thursday morning. Cache Sheriff's Lt. Matt Bilodeau said he openly discussed the status of the search and clues they'd found with the family, and said the mother of Roye was "adamant" that the search continue.

Unfortunately, Bilodeau said, he had to tell her that unless new clues are found soon, the search may have to be called off.

"I ... made it very clear to her that's not possible because at some point if we haven't had a single sign of her for a week ... it may be in the next few days, we may need to stop until we get another clue, another sighting, another something to go on," Bilodeau said. "She did not take that well, and that's understandable."

Bilodeau said he has a tremendous amount of compassion for Roye's mother's position.

The mother and Roye's brother reportedly told sheriff's officials they wanted a topographical map so they could enter the backcountry and start searching on their own.

Bilodeau said search efforts were helped by local media publishing a picture of a rudimentary hut that was built near Tony Grove. No one called in to say they built the hut, which lent support to the belief that Roye constructed the primitive structure. The downside, however, was that no one appeared to have used the hut for several days.

Meanwhile, Bilodeau clarified conflicting media reports about the events that led up to Roye's entry into the backcountry last week. While some reports had suggested that Roye's boyfriend dropped her off at the mouth of Green Canyon to go camping, Bilodeau said that's not the case.

The brother of Roye's boyfriend is a Logan resident. Roye reportedly was preparing to leave her boyfriend's brother's Logan home and hike into the mountains when the wife of the boyfriend's brother said she would drop her off at the mouth of the canyon. It was her, not the boyfriend, who gave Roye a ride to Green Canyon.

Bilodeau said another concentrated effort would be made to find Roye tonight and into tomorrow, and official may bring a search helicopter back to help out. He said he couldn't predict when they would decide to call the search off if no further clues are found.

"You've got to play it by ear," he said. "I may get a phone call in five minutes that turns this whole thing upside down.

"We've got somebody's daughter out there in the woods and we're going to do our best to find her."

Shelter near Tony Grove believed to have been used by missing Nevada woman

By Tyler Riggs

Story Created: Aug 12, 2009 at 11:58 AM MDT
Story Updated: Aug 12, 2009 at 5:49 PM MDT

Cache Sheriff's officials said they were "frustrated" Wednesday with the search for an 18-year-old Nevada woman who has been missing since the middle of last week, and they believe the woman may just not want to be found.

Cache Search and Rescue volunteers have been canvassing the Northern Utah mountains since last Wednesday and today are focusing on an area near Tony Grove where crews found a primitive-type shelter that they believe Celina Roye may have been sleeping in.

That finding comes on the same day that sheriff's officials released details about Roye's latest posting on the social networking Web site MySpace where Roye suggests she is on a quest to commune with nature and likely doesn't want to be found. The post went online last Wednesday, the day Roye went missing.

"She said she was going to avoid all humans, wanted to be one with nature ... wanted to make her way to Yellowstone to be with the wolves," Cache County Sheriff's Lt. Matt Bilodeau said Wednesday. The posting indicated that she was "traveling forest, off to river canyon (a reference to Logan River) to become one with the wolves and the forest so that my spirit can be free once more."

With that indication, Bilodeau said, there's a high probability that Roye is hiding from search crews as they look for her. Where most people who are lost in the backcountry would see a helicopter and come out into a clearing and wave their arms, Roye may be evading search crews.

That, Bilodeau said, leaves a handful of possibilities: Roye may have left the area and is making her way up to Yellowstone to be with the wolves as she indicated in her MySpace posting, she may be severely hurt, injured or deceased and crews can't find her, or she is simply avoiding crews, sneaking into camps for food and living off the water in the mountains.

"We don't know what's going on, we're extremely frustrated," Bilodeau said. "She may not even know that she's being looked for."

Crews having a 300-square mile search area, one-third of that is wilderness, and that makes the search very tough.

Meanwhile, Bilodeau said the public has been extremely helpful alerting sheriff's officials about anything they do, or don't see while in the canyons.

"That's why we went to the public with the pictures," he said.

Also today, Bilodeau said, search officials are starting to consider what they will do if and when they find Roye. Bilodeau said if they find her in good shape, they will likely offer her a ride off the mountain and if she declines, they will cease and desist searching for her. Given her potential mindset and her online postings, however, sheriff's officials plan to consult with Bear River Mental Health to determine whether Roye should be brought in for a mental evaluation upon her discovery.

UPDATE: Search called off for teen missing in Cache County
August 17, 2009
Last Update: 1:52 pm
LOGAN, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Cache County officials announced Monday that crews had called off the search for an 18-year-old woman who has been missing for more than a week.

The official search for Andrea Celina Roye was suspended after the Cache County Sheriff’s Office investigators, Search and Rescue, Department of Public Safety and the community searched for Celina Roye for ten days.

Cache County Sheriff officials say they have used helicopters, search dogs, four wheelers, man trackers, infrared detection, and Mounted Posse to try and locate Roye, but they have not been able to locate her.

Roye was last seen in Green Canyon (Cache County) on August 5th and it was reported that she was going to be gone overnight. She was reported missing on August 6th. That same day it was reported that she may have been seen in the Tony Grove area but sheriff's officials have not been able to substantiate that sighting.

On Saturday, August 15th, officials learned that a homemade shelter believed to have been used by Roye that was discovered was constructed by a couple of young men who were in that area when there was a rain shower on August 8th.

Since Roye was last seen leaving alone on August 5th, officials say they have had no other information that can be substantiated to follow.

County officials say Roye's case will remain open and that they will follow any leads that come up.

If any new evidence surfaces, county officials say they will send teams out again.

The Cache County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson says the department is very concerned for the welfare of Roye, and asked the public to continue their search for her if they are recreating in the area.

Roye's mother and brother also traveled to Logan and asked for the public’s help in the search.

Sad. Poor Celina.

I am sure her family is devastated. I will keep them all in my prayers and hopefully she is off "finding" herself and will show back up.
