ANAHEIM -- Sheriff's deputies say they have made an arrest in the attempted kidnapping of a 10-year-old girl.

The suspect is identified as 26-year-old Alfredo Granados Canchola of Artesia.

He was arrested around 4:00 p.m. in Santa Ana and booked on suspicion of attempted kidnapping, authorities said.

Investigators said they used some type of "ruse" to lure Canchola into custody, but they declined to provide details.

After Canchola was arrested, the 10-year-old girl picked him out of a sheriff's line-up, authorities said.

Orange County sheriff's officials say Canchola may be involved in similar cases, including one in Irvine.

The latest incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. Saturday while the girl was taking out the trash behind her home on Broadway.

Police say a man in his late 20s approached the girl and offered her cash to get in his car and talk with him, authorities said.

"The 10-year-old went out to dump some trash and was on her scooter in an alley behind the residence. A suspect drove up and asked her if she knew someone" as if he were looking for a friend, said Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.

When the girl said she didn't know the person, the suspect parked his vehicle and got out of the car, Amormino said. He had a handful of cash, and told the girl he would give it to her if she got in the car and talked with him.

The girl took off on her scooter and told her parents what had happened.

Her father said he saw the suspect's car as it drove away. The vehicle was described as a newer, four-door, maroon Lexus with tinted windows.

The girl's father was able to give investigators a partial license plate number.

An Irvine investigator used a multi-jurisdictional police database to track down the suspect with the partial plate number.

Authorities said the girl did exactly what she was supposed to do under the circumstances. They emphasized that parents should reinforce with their children the importance of running for help when a stranger tries to entice them into a car.

My angels on earth, the Shriners-every thing they do is for the children and they never ask for anything in return. What a concept.....
