Garrido claimed black box could speak his mind

OAKLEY, California (CNN) -- The black box sat inside a cabinet. Philip Garrido had given it to a friend for safekeeping, and that's where the friend kept it.

"He feels he can speak to you and me and everyone else using this box," said Garrido's friend and former business client, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "He was a whack job, but he was a whack job who sounded like he had a really good heart."

Garrido and his wife, Nancy, were arrested last month and charged on more than two dozen counts, including kidnapping and rape. Authorities say the Garridos held Jaycee Dugard, 29, captive for nearly two decades in their backyard. Both have pleaded not guilty. Authorities have said Garrido, a registered sex offender, fathered Dugard's two children.

A few days before his arrest, Garrido delivered some documents touting the device to the FBI.

The black box is simple, with a handle, a metal switch and jacks for plugging in headphones. But it provides some insight into the mind of 58-year-old Garrido.

Dogs, Police Returning To Garridos' Home

ANTIOCH, Calif. -- Police with search dogs were set to return Monday to the Antioch home of Phillip and Nancy Garrido, the couple accused of kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard.

Investigators have been searching the Garridos' home and a parcel next door in hope of finding clues in the unsolved 1980s disappearances of two girls.

So far, dogs trained to find human remains have stopped at the same spot along Walnut Avenue, indicating there may be bones buried underground. High-tech radar equipment also suggested something suspicious in the ground.

Some bones have been found, but it is unclear if they are human or animal.

At one point last week, deputies could be seen combing the area on their hands and knees.

Investigators are looking for information about the 1988 kidnapping of 9-year-old Michaela Garecht and the 1989 disappearance of 13-year-old Ilene Misheloff.

The Garridos, who remain in jail in Placerville, are accused of kidnapping Dugard in Meyers in 1991 when she was just 11 years old. She was found safe recently in the East Bay.

Police allege that Phillip Dugard fathered two children with Dugard, who is now 29.

Authorities dig at home of suspected kidnapperMonday, September 21, 2009 | 9:56 AM

September 21, 2009 (ANTIOCH, Calif.) -- Signs of disturbed soil and the discovery of bone fragments on the property where Jaycee Dugard was held captive for 18 years could indicate something is buried on a site where authorities have been searching and cadaver dogs earlier picked up a scent.
Authorities have spent days combing the land to see if Dugard's alleged captors can be tied to two other abductions from the late 1980s, but they also have cautioned that it's still too soon to know whether a soil "anomaly" and found bone fragments could mean any previous digging on the property was crime-related.
"It could be significant, and it could not be significant, but it's helping us target where we might do some digging," said Hayward Police Lt. Chris Orrey.
Hayward and Dublin police are investigating to see if there are any possible links between Phillip Garrido and the unsolved 1988 abduction of 9-year-old Michaela Garecht outside a Hayward market and the 1989 disappearance of 13-year-old Ilene Misheloff in Dublin.

Channel 4 to air Jaycee Lee Dugard documentaryDocumentary on Californian woman freed after over 18 years in captivity to air early next month as part of Cutting Edge strand

Channel 4 is to air a fast-turnaround documentary on the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard, the Californian woman freed in August after over 18 years in captivity.

The documentary features "the first full-length interview" with Dugard's stepfather Carl Probyn, the prime suspect in the case since the 11-year-old Dugard's kidnap in 1991 until the arrest last month of her kidnapper, Phillip Garrido, with whom she fathered two children.

Captive for 18 Years: The Jaycee Lee Story, the first documentary broadcast in the latest run of flagship Channel 4 documentary strand Cutting Edge, is being made by Question Time producer Mentorn Media.

Dugard's case, which for 18 years had been one of America's most notorious unsolved crimes, was compared in the world's media with that of Natascha Kampusch, who was held prisoner in a dungeon in Austria for more than eight years.

Her discovery caused controversy due to her apparent development of Stockholm syndrome, as a result of which she may have become emotionally attached to her kidnapper, Garrido.

Dugard's stepfather attends celebration at Horizon

Carl Probyn, who watched kidnappers snatch his stepdaughter Jaycee Lee Dugard off their South Lake Tahoe street 18 years ago, was as incredulous as anyone when Dugard was found alive last month.

Yet having now absorbed the amazing news, Probyn is not in a rush to be reunited with the woman who was 11 when he last saw her.

"I'm in no hurry," Probyn said Sunday during a fundraiser for Dugard at the Horizon Casino Resort. "I know she's safe. I know she's alive."

Probyn's sentiments seemed to be shared by the 100 or so people who gathered at the Horizon for the "Building New Bridges" benefit concert.

The Horizon convention center was festooned with pink balloons, and many attendees wore pink — a color that has come to symbolize the community's support for Dugard.

A photo of Dugard as a child hung on the wall in several places. But none of the party-goers expressed frustration that Dugard herself was not there.

Dugard stepfather wonders why it took 18 years to find Jaycee

Carl Probyn, stepfather of the South Lake Tahoe girl kidnapped in 1991, likened the law enforcement and parole officers who oversaw the man who allegedly abducted her to the "Keystone cops" and blasted them for failing to see three young females living in his backyard.

"These guys should feel real guilty about taking a paycheck, with what she went through for 18 years," Probyn said Sunday at a fundraiser for Jaycee Lee Dugard, 29.

"It's just unbelievable that the police and the parole officer, nobody picked this up," he said. "He never even went into the backyard," Probyn said of the parole officer. "It's sickening."

Probyn appeared Sunday at a benefit concert attended by about 100 people at the Horizon Casino Convention Center in Stateline staged by community members to raise funds for Dugard and her two daughters fathered by her alleged kidnapper, Phillip Garrido.

Fox just reported that two different dogs zeroed in on the same area that the first two cadaver dogs hit on last week.  This is not sounding good.

OLD BONES DOG DETECTS SCENT IN GARRIDO'S BACKYARD

Digging to begin Monday afternoon

Updated: 9:21 am PDT September 21, 2009

CONTRA COSTA CO. -- A dog specially trained to find older human remains detected a scent in an area of accused kidnappers Phillip and Nancy Garrido's backyard Monday, authorities said.

An old bones dog did alert to a scent in the same area of the Garrido's backyard that attracted the attention of a cadaver dog last week, Hayward Police Lt. Chris Orrey said. A high-tech sonar device also indicated some kind of underground anomaly in that spot, she added.

Orrey said digging would begin in that area Monday afternoon.

Old Bones Dog Detects Scent In Garrido's Backyard

The massive forensic effort was launched last week by local law enforcement agencies and the FBI in an effort to find any link between the couple and the 1988 abduction of Michaela Garecht and the 1989 kidnapping of Dublin resident Ilene Misheloff .

The forensic teams have used dogs, a small earthmover for big pieces, and rakes and barrels to meticulously comb through the Garrido’s backyard and that of a neighbor. But on Friday, they admitted no link had yet been found and said that if Monday's search came up empty, the search would be suspended.

Investigators were also continuing to use ground-penetrating radar to search underground, and have even brought in an archaeologist, Bill Silva, who said that he's treating the property as if it were "a prehistoric site."

"It's all dogs and technology at this point," Orrey said.

I cannot imagine what hell the Garecht family and Mishelhoff family must be going through right now. Wish there was some way to ease their burden through this.

EXCLUSIVE: Jaycee Dugard’s Biological Dad Hires Gloria Allred

It's rare to see any high profile case without seeing Gloria Allred's name attached somewhere.

So it's no surprise that Allred has surfaced in the Jaycee Lee Dugard case.

Allred is repping Jaycee's biological dad, Ken Slayton.

Allred tells RadarOnline.com, "I can confirm that I'm representing Ken Slayton, Jaycee Dugard's father.  I have no further comment."

Searchers begin digging on Garrido property

ANTIOCH, Calif. -- Police investigating two child abductions are starting to dig on the property where a Northern California couple held a girl captive for 18 years.

Police are trying to determine if the couple charged with kidnapping Jaycee Dugard are linked to cases in nearby cities around the same time.

So far, the search in Phillip and Nancy Garrido's backyard has not revealed any link to the 1988 abduction of Michaela Garecht or the 1989 disappearance of Ilene Misheloff.

Hayward police Lt. Chris Orrey says search dogs combed the area early Monday. She says two dogs trained to look for human bones detected something in the same vicinity where cadaver dogs picked up a scent last week.

Orrey says if the digging turns up nothing, the search could end Tuesday

Garrido Property Search Focuses on Possible Remains

ANTIOCH, CA - Search dogs that specialize in sniffing out human remains and bones picked up a scent Monday morning on the property of Phillip and Nancy Garrido in Antioch.

Hayward Police Lt. Chris Orrey said the dogs detected the scent near the same place where cadaver dogs led searchers last week.

The search dogs were scouring the grounds for any evidence that would link the Garridos to the 1988 kidnapping of Michaela Garecht in Hayward and the 1989 disappearance of 13-year-old Ilene Misheloff in Dublin.

Crews expected to start digging on the property Monday afternoon. At the news conference, Orrey told reporters nothing of significance has been found yet.

Several bones were discovered on the property in recent weeks, and DNA analysis was underway to determine if they're human.

Hayward and Dublin police departments secured search warrants on the Garrido property last week and began a methodical search using search dogs and ground-penetrating radar.

Law enforcement agencies including the FBI and the Pittsburg Police Department have been re-examining unsolved cases after the Garridos were arrested last month in the kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard.

Dugard was on her way to school in 1991 when she was pulled into a car just a block away from her South Lake Tahoe home.

She was discovered alive last month with her two daughters who were fathered by Garrido. They'd been living an isolated life in a compound of shacks and tents amid a pile of debris in the Garridos' backyard.

Phillip and Nancy Garrido have been charged with kidnap, false imprisonment and rape and remain in the El Dorado County jail.

Law enforcement agencies will hold a 4 p.m. news conference on Monday to update their search. We'll carry the briefing live on News10 and news10.net.
