I was completely elated to hear the news that JC was found after all this time. For the moment  I just want to celebrate that she was found. I pray every night that a missing child comes home and finally I feel like a prayer may have been answered for so many.

Maybe in a few days I will be able to focus on the terrible things that happened to this beautiful child/young lady.

But for now since this is truly a "rare" occurrence and given all the bad news this past year, it is so nice to finally hear some good news.

Kidnap suspect had criminal past, brother says
Demian Bulwa, Chronicle Staff Writer
Thursday, August 27, 2009

Ron Garrido said he always knew his younger brother was deeply troubled.

There was, he recalled Thursday, Phillip Garrido's damaging use of LSD as a teenager in Brentwood and his talk of sexual compulsion. There was the escape from fellow drug dealers after high school, the federal conviction for rape and kidnapping and his prison marriage.

Still, the latest news - accusations that his 58-year-old brother had snatched a child off a street, held her in his backyard for 18 years and fathered two of her children - was a shock for Ron Garrido.

He said in an interview with The Chronicle that he was surprised at his only sibling's alleged crimes - but he didn't doubt the story.

"It just seems so bizarre, but I can believe it," said the 65-year-old Brentwood resident. "I know my brother, and I can believe he did that. ... He's a fruitcake.

"My thoughts are with the poor little girl," Ron Garrido said of Jaycee Lee Dugard, 29, who was abducted in 1991 near her family's South Lake Tahoe home. "She was held prisoner there. She had two children with this idiot. Now she's got to start a life."

Ron Garrido said his brother's wife, Nancy Garrido, who was also arrested, was "a robot" under her husband's control.

"She would do anything he asked her to," said Ron Garrido, a former electrician and retired supervisor at the East Contra Costa Irrigation District. "I told my wife, 'It's no different from Manson and those girls.' She was under his control."

The brothers grew up in Brentwood with their parents, Manuel and Pat Garrido. Their childhood was relatively unremarkable, he said, until Phillip Garrido began acting out, using LSD and dealing drugs.

Phillip Garrido graduated from Liberty High School in 1969. When he was about 20, he fled to Reno after learning that fellow drug dealers "had a contract out on him," Ron Garrido said.

In 1971, Phillip Garrido was convicted of rape and kidnapping after taking a woman prisoner in Reno and assaulting her somewhere else in the Tahoe area, the brother said.

It was at the federal prison in Leavenworth, Kan., that Phillip Garrido met his wife, the visiting niece of another prisoner.

The couple communicated through letters and then married in a ceremony held behind prison walls, Ron Garrido said.

After his release in the late 1980s, Phillip Garrido moved in with his mother, who lived just outside Antioch in a modest home with a large backyard. His parents had divorced in 1971, and his mother had later married Herschel Franzen, who left the home to his wife when he died in the early 1990s.

Their mother still lives at the home but has suffered major dementia for about eight years, according to her son. On Thursday, she was at the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez.

Ron Garrido said his brother, over the subsequent years, spoke of plans to get rich and start a church. But he never spoke of Dugard.

There was one suspicious incident. In 2007, Ron Garrido said, an aunt told him that Phillip Garrido had visited her in Brentwood and brought along two young girls. He said they were neighbors' children and that he was babysitting.

"My aunt told me, 'I swear that oldest girl is his daughter. She's got his eyes,' " Ron Garrido remembered.

Ron Garrido said he never went into the home's backyard, where police say Phillip Garrido had set up a crude compound for his captives.

"My brother could do no wrong in my mother's eyes. I'm sure he told her some story and she bought the whole thing," the older brother said.

He said he last saw his brother at a relative's funeral a few weeks ago, and Phillip Garrido was acting strangely and pacing back and forth to his car.

But that was Phillip, the brother said, and Phillip was a strange man.

"Crazy, crazy, crazy," Ron Garrido said. "There's no word to describe this. It's just out there."

Stepfather of kidnapped girl says she feels `remorseful,' `guilty' about captivity

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Just hours after El Dorado County authorities described abductee Jaycee Lee Dugard's 18 years in captivity in Antioch, her stepfather said the now 29-year-old woman seems remarkably well considering her ordeal.

In a telephone interview with KXTV, Carl Probyn said Dugard reunited with her mother, Terry, on Thursday - and said despite the lonely years away, her daughter appeared much as her family remembered her.

“She looks healthy. She looks good,” Probyn said.

But Probyn said Terry confirmed some signs of Jaycee's long confinement were present.

“She is very remorseful. She's very guilty that she bonded with these people,” Probyn said.

Dugard lived nearly two decades as a prisoner in the secluded backyard of an Antioch home, raising two children by her alleged abductor with little to no outside contact, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Deparment.

At a Placerville news conference Thursday, El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar said even though the 11-year-old girl abducted in 1991 lived in a makeshift set of sheds and tents for 18 years with her daughters, the now 29-year-old Dugard was in surprisingly good shape after her identity was discovered Wednesday.

“Living in a backyard for 18 years does take its toll, but she was in good health,” Kollar said. “Jaycee has been there ever since. The children were born there.”

Kollar said Dugard's 15-year-old and 11-year-old daughters were fathered by her captor, Phillip Garrido. Garrido, 58, and his wife Nancy Garrido, 54, were arrested for investigation of kidnapping and conspiracy Wednesday.

“He fathered both children with Jaycee,” Kollar said.

Formal criminal complaints against the Garridos were expected to be filed in El Dorado County Superior Court by noon Friday, according to El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson.

Kollar said the break in the 18-year search for the missing South Lake Tahoe girl began Tuesday when Garrido, accompanied by Dugard's two daughters, attempted to hand out religious literature on the UC Berkeley campus.

The interaction between Garrido and the two girls prompted the attention of a UC Berkeley police officer, who ran a background check on Garrido.

When it was discovered that Garrido was on parole following a 1971 conviction for rape and kidnapping, Kollar said officers alerted the state parole office.

The call led to a meeting called by Garrido's parole officer, Kollar said. Along with Garrido was his wife Nancy, the two girls and a young woman Garrido called Allissa.

Kollar said the parole officer had never seen “Allissa” or the two girls during any home visits to Garrido's Antioch home. That suspicion prompted a call to Concord Police. From there, detectives unraveled Garrido's house of cards -- and it wasn't long before it seemed clear that Allissa was actually Jaycee Dugard.

“The diligent questioning and follow-up by the parolee's agent of record led to Garrido revealing his kidnapping of the adult female,” the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement Thursday.

“Without (parole) assistance, we probably never would have found this out,” Kollar said.

Kollar said Dugard was cooperative and forthcoming with detectives. “She wasn't evasive at all,” Kollar said.

Co-workers of the parole officer, who works out of the State Parole Office in Fairfield, called the officer identified only as Santos a hero.

“He did an awesome job. He went well beyond the call of duty with this case,” said Santos' supervisor Dwayne Cooks. “He went with his gut feeling and it paid off for him.”

Officers in Antioch who searched the Garridos' home found a secluded, blocked-off backyard area, a series of tents and sheds in a secret area hidden behind a 6-foot fence under a tarp.

Kollar said it was in the soundproofed shed and two outdoor tents that Dugard and the girls lived for 18 years.

“None of the children have ever been to school. They've never been to a doctor,” Kollar said. “They were kept in complete isolation in this compound.”

There was electricity from electrical cords, rudimentary outhouse, rudimentary shower, “as if you were camping,” he said. Also found in the backyard was a car, believed to be the vehicle used in Dugard's abduction. That grey sedan was taken away by authorities late Thursday night.

The house was cordoned off with police tape as it was searched by FBI agents and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department Thursday. A small barn belonging to a next-door neighbor was also searched. Officials said investigators would once again be collecting evidence at the home Friday.

Kollar said Dugard was reunited with her mother and step-sister Thursday. Dugard retains custody of her children and was staying at a Bay area motel.

Carl Probyn said his wife Terry reported Dugard's girls also seemed well cared for.

“The two girls look healthy,” Probyn said. “They haven't been educated, but they're happy, they're smiling.”

Phillip Garrido is also being held for investigation of rape by force, lewd and lascivious acts with a minor and sexual penetration, said Jimmie Lee, a spokesman for the Contra Costa Sheriff's Department.

The Garridos were being held at the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville awaiting arraignment.

Phillip Garrido has a conviction for rape by force or fear and was paroled from a Nevada state prison in 1988, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

He was also convicted of kidnapping a 25-year-old woman whom he snatched from a South Lake Tahoe parking lot, handcuffed, tied down and held in a mini-warehouse in Reno, according to a November 1976 story in the Reno Gazette-Journal.

A detective at the time said he found the woman with Garrido in a warehouse that had rugs on the floor and walls, pornographic magazines, a movie projector, a spotlight, wine and hot water.

People who knew Garrido said he became increasingly fanatic about his religious beliefs in recent years, sometimes breaking out into song and claiming that God spoke to him through a box.

“In the last couple years he started getting into this strange religious stuff. We kind of felt sorry for him,” said Tim Allen, president of East County Glass and Window Inc. in Pittsburgh, who bought business cards and letterhead from Garrido's printing business for the last decade.

Three times in recent years, Garrido arrived at Allen's showroom with two “cute little blond girls” in tow, he said.

In April 2008, Garrido registered a corporation called Gods Desire at his home address, according the California Secretary of State. During recent visits to the showroom, Garrido would talk about quitting the printing business to preach full time and gave the impression he was setting up a church, Allen said.

“He rambled. It made no sense,” he said.

Garrido would talk about holding events at UC Berkeley and mentioned the names of important people as if he knew them. Allen said he had no inkling of Garrido's criminal record.

“We never thought anything bad about the guy,” Allen said. “He was just kind of nutty.”

Pittsburg wrecking yard owner Chevonne Molino said she contracted with Garrido, who printed business cards from his home.

Molino remembered Garrido as a religious man who handed out water to her customers while preaching the gospel. She said she also got to know Garrido's two young daughters at a recent birthday party.

“(The girls) said this was their first time really being out,” Molino said. “They (said) they were homeschooled and they were having church in their basement. They had a congregation of five.”

Dugard was just 11 years old when she was last seen just 150 yards away from her home as she walked to her bus stop in South Lake Tahoe around 8:05 a.m. on June 10, 1991.

Probyn, Dugard's stepfather, said from inside his home, he saw a man and a woman in a two-tone gray, late-model sedan make a U-turn on Washeon Boulevard, then saw the woman in the car grab the girl and pull her inside.

Investigators at the time believed Dugard may have been taken across state lines into Nevada after her abduction. Despite at least one alleged sighting immediately following her disappearance, Dugard was not seen again - until Wednesday.

Phillip Garrido Prison,
Parole History
Updated: Friday, 28 Aug 2009, 9:13 AM CDT
Published : Friday, 28 Aug 2009, 9:12 AM CDT

By FRANK CARNEVALE
(MYFOX NATIONAL) - Phillip Garrido,58, was arrested in the kidnapping and rape of Jaycee Dugard Wednesday. Dugard is the California girl who was kidnapped in 1991 and has spent the last 18 years living in tents and sheds behind the home of Garrido, according to police.

Garrido's wife, Nancy, 54, was also arrested and prosecutors said the couple will likely to be charged on Friday.

This case brings to light Garrido's criminal past. Garrido was arrested in Reno on Nov. 23, 1976 on charges of kidnapping a South Lake Tahoe, Calif., woman. He was a 25-year-old musician at the time, when he knocked on the car window of a casino worker and asked for a ride, he then grabbed her, taped her up and drove her to a storage unit in Reno, Nev. Police happened upon the car at the storage unit and when approached and knocked, heard the woman scream.

According to the Reno Gazette-Journal , the officer said the unit had rugs on the floor and walls, pornographic magazines, a movie projector, marital aids, a spotlight, wine and hot water.

In 1977 Garrido was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison for kidnapping and five years to life on a state charge of sexual assault for crimes in Nevada. He started his federal prison term on June 30, 1977 and then was transferred to Nevada authorities on Jan. 22, 1988 to serve state time. He was then paroled in Nevada on Aug. 26, 1988 and then later paroled to California.

Mercury News.com reported that a violation landed him back in prison from April to August 1993. The San Franciso Chronicle reported that police and authorities made several visits to Garrido's home, but never found evidence of anyone living there except for he and his wife.

Eleven-year-old Dugard was abducted off a South Lake Tahoe street while walking to a bus stop near her home on June 10, 1991.

Dugard Kidnap Suspects Headed To Court

PLACERVILLE, Calif. -- An Antioch husband and wife accused of kidnapping Meyers resident Jaycee Lee Dugard 18 years ago were expected to appear in a Placerville court Friday.

Phillip Craig Garrido, 58, is suspected of abducting Dugard when she was just 11 years old, confining her to an Antioch back yard and fathering two children with her.

Dugard lived with her children -- now ages 11 and 15 -- in a series of tents and sheds in what authorities call a back yard within a back yard.

Dugard, who turned 29 on Thursday, surfaced this week, was said to be in good health and has reunited with her family.

Phillip Garrido and his 55-year-old wife, Nancy Garrido, were being held in jail in Placerville early Friday.

Phillip Garrido was booked on charges including kidnapping, conspiracy, rape and committing lewd acts with a minor, according to the records. Nancy Garrido is accused of kidnapping and conspiracy. Both are being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

In an interview Thursday with KCRA 3, Phillip Garrido said his life "has been straightened out" and implored people to wait until they hear the whole story of what happened at a Bay Area home

"You are going to be completely impressed," he said. "It's a disgusting thing that took place with me at the beginning. But I turned my life completely around and to be able to understand that, you have to start there."

The case broke after Garrido was spotted Tuesday with two children as he tried to enter the University of California, Berkeley, campus to hand out religious literature. The officers said he was acting suspiciously toward the children. They questioned him and did a background check, determining he was a parolee, and informed his parole officer.

Garrido was ordered to appear for a parole meeting and arrived Wednesday with Dugard, his wife and two children. During questioning, corrections officials said he admitted kidnapping Dugard. Dugard also accompanied the Garridos to the meeting with the parole officer.

NEW INFORMATION: Dugard Suspect's Parole Status

SACRAMENTO, CA - We are learning new information this morning about the federal parole status of Philip Garrido. Garrido is expected to be in court Friday in connection with the 1991 kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard.

Friday morning, News10 spoke with Tom Hutchinson, chief of staff for the U.S. Parole Commission. He pulled up Garrido's file and told us the file is archived.

Hutchinson says that indicates to him Garrido completed all legal obligations for his federal parole. Hutchinson also told News10 it would be highly unusual, if not impossible, for someone to be paroled in 1988 to still be on the parole. News10 will be speaking with local and state officials today to learn more about Garrido's status.

Sources have told News10 that Garrido was in the South Lake Tahoe area the day Jaycee disappeared.

Family adjusting to news of 18-year captivity
August 28, 2009 10:34 EDT

PLACERVILLE, Calif. (AP) -- The family of a woman who police say was held captive by her kidnapper for 18 years is sorting through some mixed feelings.

Jaycee Dugard was reunited with her mother and other relatives yesterday. Her stepfather, Carl Probyn, spoke to his wife afterward and says everyone is "doing great."

Appearing on several morning news shows, Probyn said the most surprising thing to his wife was that her daughter, now 29, looks very young, almost like she did when she taken at age 11.

But he says Dugard feels terribly guilty for bonding with her captor, and her family is troubled by learning the facts of how she was forced to live.

Police say her abductor kept Dugard hidden behind a series of fences, sheds and tents in his backyard, and fathered two children with her. The children, now 11 and 15, were also kept there.

The stepfather had long been considered a suspect. And he blames the kidnapping, which he witnessed, for ruining his marriage. He and Dugard's mother are separated.

A convicted sex offender and his wife have been arrested in connection with the case.
