Jaycee's Aunt: "We Are All Crying And Laughing Together"

Jaycee Lee Dugard's aunt, Tina Dugard, took to the podium Thursday morning to share a statement from the Dugard family to the world's media.

Dugard also shared three never before seen photos of Jaycee Lee, one of her at 3 years old, one taken at the Halloween before her abduction and one taken January 1991 at the rose parade.

Dugard said that it's been a "joyful time for the family" and she thanked all the police and law enforcement officers that have helped on the case.

She said that they've all been sharing memories and stories and that Jaycee remembers all of the family. In fact, when she saw Dugard she yelled "Auntie Tina!" and "wrapped her arms around and hugged her as tight as she could."

Dugard also said that Jaycee is enjoying getting to know her little sister, who was just a baby when she was abducted, and couldn't stop touching her and kissing her face.

The whole family is "laughing and crying together" and although Jaycee's daughters were not formally educated Jaycee did an amazing job of raising them.

Dugard thanked the public for their outpouring of well wishes and prayers.

In a commune of, say 100 people, it's real easy to spot the "jerk" and deal with him/her.

But as the population grows exponentially, so does the number of "jerks".

500 years ago, if this were to happen 3,000 miles away from you, you might not have known about it.
So the instant communication aspect of this plays into the "in your face" of evil that has always existed, and always will.

The Huns and the Visigoths were about as brutal as they come.
Leave us not forget the Spanish Inquisition, or the witches that were burned at the stake. And the decline of the Roman Empire saw some very sick individuals who had no shame, nor moral grounding.

Evil exists. Always did & always will.But when we see stuff that gives us pause, and then say, "I don't want to get involved" Or "It's none of my business", what does that say about us as a people?
It may be easier to just blame law enforcement dropping the ball...it's always easier to blame others. We are all to blame

This is something I actually agree with.  Everytime someone has stated that the world is getting worse I have never agreed.  It has always been sick and gross.  It's just that technology has now become so advanced that we live in a real time society and the information from all over is in our houses almost as soon as it is printed.  All we can do is become more vigilant and do our best to help others.

Jaycee sounds like a wonderful mommy! Teaching her children to read and write, about stars and plants.

Phillip Craig Garrido - the man accused of kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 - may have attacked two other women in the 1970s, according to a new report in the Sacramento Bee.

Garrido was arrested in 1972 on suspicion of giving speed to a 14-year-old girl and raping her in a motel room, the Antioch Police Department told the newspaper.

Charges were dropped at a preliminary hearing after the girl decided not to testify, police said.

Court records released yesterday recount that Garrido, now 58, tried to abduct a woman in South Lake Tahoe in November 1976, just an hour before he kidnapped Katherine Callaway and drove her to a Reno storage facility and raped her. Garrido served 11 years in federal prison in the Callaway case.


In those records, Callaway mentions that Garrido had confessed to earlier abductions.

"He said he had abducted two other girls prior to yesterday, one from the bay area and one possibly in Los Vegas (sic.), I can't remember, but that he had never had to hurt any of them," Callaway said in a statement to police.

The girl in the 1972 incident contacted Antioch police after Garrido was arrested last week, police said. The woman does not want to be identified.

The 14-year-old girl and a friend were walking to a public library in Antioch when the friend said there were a couple of guys waiting to meet them, Antioch police Lt. Leonard Orman told the newspaper.

"The victim assumes these guys are going to be age appropriate, and when they get there it's a couple of guys quite a bit older than they expected," Orman said. "They get into the car with these guys and start driving around the city."

One of the men was Garrido, Orman said.

They gave the girls barbiturates and drove around the city, Orman said. It's unclear why, but a police car chased them for a while, but they got away, ditching the police car somewhere in the neighborhood that Garrido lived in until his arrest last week.

"Essentially, from there the girl is provided more barbiturates and she remembers next waking up in a motel in Antioch that's on east 18th Street going out toward Oakley," Orman told the newspaper. "She remembers Garrido being there and she remembers being repeatedly raped, sexually assaulted, by him.

"At some point a day or two later her mother and father find her there ... They get to the motel and find her daughter there who's obviously been raped and Garrido is still there. From what we understand they call law enforcement, an Antioch police officer responds, finds out the basics and from what we can tell, arrests Garrido."

The case was dismissed after the girl decided at a preliminary hearing not to testify, Orman said.

In the 1976 abduction Garrido is alleged to have attempted, he is reported to have approached a woman and asked for a ride.

Leland Lufty, the federal prosecutor who handled the case, told the Bee that when Garrido handcuffed one of her arms, the woman jumped out of the car while it was still moving and got away.

ANTIOCH, CA - Antioch police Thursday addressed queries about a 1972 rape case involving a 14-year-old girl and Phillip Garrido, the man charged with the kidnap, rape and imprisonment of Jaycee Dugard.

Lt. Leonard Orman said from limited records remaining of the 37-year-old case and a new interview with the victim, police know she was at the Antioch public library in April, 1972 with a friend when they met Garrido and another man whose identity she did not recall.

The victim told police investigators she got in a car with Garrido and was given barbituates. Orman said the victim said she ended up at a motel on East 18th Street with Garrido and was given more drugs.

"(She) basically awoke, found herself there and was repeatedly raped and sexaully assaulted at that time," Orman said.

The girl's parents found her at the motel and called Antioch police. Officers arrested Garrido then or shortly thereafter, Orman said.

Garrido was charged. However, the prosecution was dropped when the victim refused to testify.

Garrido's '72 rape case: Girl wouldn't testify

(09-03) 15:51 PDT ANTIOCH -- Antioch police said today that they do not intend to pursue for a second time allegations that accused kidnapper Phillip Craig Garrido raped and drugged a 14-year-old girl in 1972.

Garrido was charged by Contra Costa County prosecutors in 1972 after he allegedly assaulted the girl in an Antioch motel, but the case was dropped after the teenager decided not to testify, police Lt. Leonard Orman said at a news conference today.

The alleged victim contacted police after Garrido and his wife, Nancy, were arrested last week on charges that they kidnapped Jaycee Dugard in South Lake Tahoe in 1991, when she was 11, and held her for 18 years.

The woman was not interested in pressing her case, Orman said, but wanted to make sure that investigators looking into the Dugard matter were aware of the 1972 incident. Other investigators said the statute of limitations on rape in that era was three years.

Orman said the department had records showing that police arrested Phillip Garrido, then 21, on April 17, 1972, on suspicion of rape, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and providing drugs to a minor.

The girl told investigators that she and a female friend had met up with Garrido and another man at the Antioch Public Library and had gotten into a car with them.

She said she had later awakened at a motel on East 18th Street and contacted her parents, saying Garrido had raped her and given her barbiturates, Orman said.

The police were contacted, and Garrido was arrested within days, police said.

Because many years have passed, the original case file was destroyed, police said. Orman said he did not know whether Garrido's reported companion had been arrested.

Orman said police were releasing this information now to address questions from the media and to ask that reporters refrain from contacting the alleged victim. Her name was not released.
