$30M bail set for Dugard kidnap suspect

<snipped>

El Dorado County Superior Court Judge Douglas Phimister set the high amount Monday, citing the serious nature of the charges, injuries to the victim and the fact that Garrido was on parole at the time of the alleged crime. There is also a bail hold in place, meaning that if Garrido posts bail he will still not be released, according to District Attorney Vern Pierson. His wife Nancy is still being held without bail.

Nancy Garrido, Accused Kidnapper, is "Very Lonely" and Afraid for Her Life

NEW YORK (CBS) Nancy Garrido, who is accused of kidnapping and holding Jaycee Lee Dugard captive for 18 years, is getting a harsh jailhouse welcome.

Other inmates are threatening to rape and kill the 54-year-old Garrido, sources tell CBS News, and she is being kept in isolation for her own protection.

They also report that Garrido, who once had a full compound, including her convicted rapist husband Phillip Garrido, their alleged kidnap victim Dugard and her two daughters, is feeling "very lonely," and now spends most of her time reading the bible.

Oh gee! How very sad for her that she's feeling "very lonely", NOT!

Good! And I hope she feels like this everyday! Probably not half as lonely as Jaycee has felt in the last 18 years! I have not one ounce of sympathy for her, not one!

Oh Boo Hoo that Nancy Garrido is feeling lonely. At least she can feel safe....something that she not only denied Jaycee of but was the cause of along with PG. 18 years of living in fear, being lonely, and totally abused in every way possible is what she did to Jaycee and this woman ought to feel damn lucky she is breathing right now. Of course she won't always be protected.....once she is sentenced I hope she receives everything, in every way, that Jaycee did because of Her and Garrido's actions.

PLACERVILLE, California (CNN) -- A California couple charged with a combined 29 felony counts in connection with the kidnapping and rape of Jaycee Dugard appeared in court for a bond hearing Monday.

Phillip and Nancy Garrido, wearing red jail coveralls, were flanked by their attorneys. They appeared to glance at each other only briefly. Phillip Garrido wore a bandage on the side of his nose.

The Garridos are accused of kidnapping Dugard in 1991, when she was 11, and keeping her in a well-hidden compound behind their home in Antioch, California, for 18 years. Phillip Garrido fathered two children with Dugard during her captivity, authorities have said.

The couple had been held without bail, but Phillip Garrido's defense attorney requested that bail be set for him Monday. El Dorado County Superior Court Judge Douglas Phimister set his bond at $30 million.

However, El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson told reporters after the hearing that Garrido, a registered sex offender, is also on a "parole hold," which carries no bond. A parole hold is placed on people on parole or under supervision when they are taken back into custody.

Nancy Garrido's attorney told Phimister that she was not contesting her no-bond status, although she might ask that bond be set in the future.

Both defense attorneys told the judge they wanted to make clear that their clients are invoking the right to counsel and do not want to be questioned. Phimister noted that "other agencies" are interested in interviewing the couple.

Phillip Garrido will undergo a psychiatric evaluation, a common step for defendants. Nancy Garrido's attorney said he was attempting to schedule one for her as well.

The two defendants spoke only once, answering "Yes," when asked by the judge if they were willing to waive their right to a preliminary hearing within 60 days.

RENO, NV - Jaycee Lee Dugard is slated to sit down with Oprah and tell her story, according to the UK’s Daily Mirror.

KOLO-8 has been unable to independently confirm the report, but the Daily Mirror, along with several online news sites are reporting the Oprah interview. A representative for Oprah’s show said they “do not have Jaycee Dugard booked at this time.” They said that they are trying to track down the source of the rumors.

The Mirror report says that Dugard will be paid $1,000,000 to appear on the show. Last week Oprah told “The Insider” that she was very interested in getting the interview with Dugard.

So... does this mean that he got partly what he may have wanted, free (for him) surgery on his nose?  I read somewhere that it was supposedly cancer on his nose.  Nice, whatever it was.  Free surgery.  While the hard-working taxpayers of America get to pay for it.   How many honest and decent folks go without surgery cuz they cannot afford it?

IIRC, wasn't his original sentence that he was parolled from, 50 years?  So does it mean that since he 'allegedly' violated parole with the 'alleged' crime, that he reverts to doing all of that time, as well as the time he will likely get for this crime, on top of that?  If so, he's in for a lifetime.  The DP will be too good for him, IMO.  He needs to pay every minute of every day, for the rest of his life.  And in general population too.  No mollycoddling and protecting his wretched @ss.  IMO.

I soooooooo agree, Tupelo!  Let both of em be protected just til trial, then let them both feel the fear of the wrath of the general population.  Prison justice may, some feel, be over the top.  However in this case?  nuh uh.  They need to at the very least, be shaking in fear to their very core.  And then have that fear realized.  To the point of nearly losing their lives, but hopefully not, so it can continue.. and continue... and continue.. over and over again.  In a way, it feels to me that this is what "an eye for an eye, an ear for an ear" is all about.  IMO

<snipped>

Before Monday's hearing, deputy district attorney Trish Kelliher filed a declaration seeking higher bail for both suspects, citing the serious nature of the crimes and saying they should be considered flight risks.

She also said in her court filing that a stun gun was used to subdue the victim when she was kidnapped from a South Lake Tahoe street in 1991.

Both defendants are due back in court for an Oct. 29 hearing.

You are welcome.  I am betting the surgery was on that black growth on his nose which looked like melanoma.  They should have left it ad let it fester and rot him.

Go directly to jail and stay there

Phillip Garrido's $30 million bail amount, set at a Monday hearing by an El Dorado County judge, is not the highest ever.

In 1988, for instance, the late San Francisco Judge J. Dominique Olcomendy -- weary that a 25-year-old alleged prostitute was continually being arrested and released -- briefly set her bail at $5 billion.

"I know the amount of bail is outrageous," Olcomendy admitted.

Leaving aside the oddities of the city by the bay, Garrido's bail is right up there, putting the alleged kidnapper-rapist of Jaycee Dugard in the company of a band of similarly notorious killers, molesters and scam artists.

Many accused killers, particularly in death penalty cases, aren't given the opportunity to bail out at all. But in California, defendants have a basic right to a reasonable bail, the idea being that "you shouldn't be punished until you're convicted," said former San Francisco prosecutor Jim Hammer.

Bail is an insurance policy against a suspect ditching a trial. Judges set ...

Report: Garridos in Isolation While in Jail

by Blake Taylor

The Antioch couple accused of kidnapping Jaycee Dugard 18 years ago are reportedly being held in isolation and have been threatened behind bars.

But the El Dorado County district attorney says they're doing their best to protect Philip and Nancy Garrido.

The judge set Philip Garrido's bail at 30-million dollars on Monday.
