Timeline: Jaycee Lee Dugard kidnapping

Jaycee Lee Dugard’s kidnapping from her South Lake Tahoe bus stop 18 years ago quickly became one of the area’s most high profile crimes, the tragedy of which gripped the community as detectives searched for leads that remained scarce for nearly two decades. Here’s a timeline of the case:

June 11, 1991
: Jaycee Lee is snatched just 1,500 feet from her home by a couple driving a gun-metal gray sedan. Her step-father Carl Probyn witnessed the kidnapping from his garage and attempted to chase the couple on his bicycle.

June 12, 1991: Clutching her daughter’s stuffed pink bunny rabbit, Jaycee Lee’s mother Terry Probyn goes before reporters and television cameras to plead for her daughter’s safe return. A car fitting the description of the suspect’s vehicle, with a young girl sleeping in the back seat, is spotted at Fallen Leaf Lake.

June 14, 1991
: The case is profiled on America’s Most Wanted, resulting in hundreds of tips to police.

Aug. 10, 1991: More than 250 people hold a candlelight vigil to show support for Jaycee Lee and her family.

Aug. 24, 1991: The FBI questions two suspects in Ceres, Calif., just south of Modesto, but find no connection to the case.

Nov. 25, 1991: People Magazine profiles the kidnapping in a three-page spread.

Jan. 1992: A Gardnerville musician records a song “Jaycee Lee” to help raise money for the search.

June 10, 1992
: A candlelight vigil is held to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Jaycee Lee’s disappearance. In the months since the kidnapping, her friends and family have mailed more than 1.2 million photos of Jaycee Lee across the country.

June 10, 2001: More than 100 people bearing pink ribbons in honor of Jaycee Lee’s favorite color march down U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to mark the 10-year anniversary of her disappearance.

June 2002: Investigators dig up the yard of a Truckee priest accused of molesting three girls in the 1970s, searching for clues to Jaycee Lee’s disappearance and that of another girl who had gone missing in Northern California. No connection is found.

Aug. 26, 2009
: A 29-year-old woman walks in to a Contra Costa County law enforcement office, claims she is Jaycee Lee and says she was kidnapped 18 years ago.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Sheriff's officials said Thursday they believe a woman who walked into a police station had been kidnapped as an 11-year-old in 1991 outside her South Lake Tahoe home.

The woman came into the Concord police station and said she was Jaycee Lee Dugard, the victim of the abduction 18 years ago, said sheriff's Lt. Les Lovell of the El Dorado Sheriff's Department.

"We're 99 percent sure it's her," Lovell said. He said DNA tests were being conducted. It was not immediately clear when she had surfaced at the station.

Lovell said Concord police did an investigation after the woman surfaced, and he received a call Wednesday from investigators who had tentatively identified her as Dugard.

"Her family has been contacted and they are in the process of arranging" a meeting, said Lovell, who was a detective assigned to help investigate the kidnapping in 1991. "We are very confident at this point in time that it is her."

Witnesses reported that a vehicle with two people drove up to Dugard and abducted her while her stepfather was watching on June 10, 1991, the Sheriff's Department said in a news release Thursday.

The investigation has been ongoing since she was abducted

Lovell said two people are in custody in connection with the case, but he could not elaborate.

The sheriff's department has scheduled a news conference to discuss the case later Thursday.

Woman Who Says She Is Kidnapped California Girl Comes Forward 18 Years Later
Thursday, August 27, 2009

CONCORD, Calif. —  A young woman walked into a California police station and announced that she was Jaycee Lee Dugard — a missing girl who was snatched by an abductor from a Lake Tahoe-area school bus stop in 1991, authorities said Thursday.

Dugard's stepfather, Carl Probyn, told KTVU that the girl’s mother Terry Probyn got a stunning phone call at work Wednesday from federal agents.

"She got a call from the FBI, they said they had found Jaycee and she was alive," he said in a phone interview from the couple's Riverside County, Calif., home. "They put her (the woman) on the phone. My wife talked with her and is convinced she is Jaycee. Jaycee remembers everything."

Terry Probyn then phoned Carl, her former husband, according to KTVU.

"My wife called me about 4 and asked me if I was sitting down," said Probyn, whose marriage broke up in the wake of the abduction. "(She said), 'They found Jaycee They found her alive.'"

Authorities said they have two people in custody in relation to the case. Terry Probyn was traveling to be reunited with her daughter, KTVU reported.

"After 18 years you do give up hope, this is a miracle," Carl Probyn told KTVU.

On the morning of June 10, 1991, then 11-year-old Jaycee left her family's South Lake Tahoe house to catch her school bus, dressed in a pink shirt and pink pants.

As Carl Probyn looked on from the family's driveway two blocks away, a gray sedan pulled up. Someone grabbed Jaycee and sped off. Even though the local police were quick to respond and there were witnesses, the little girl was never found.

A 2002 search of a vacation property owned by a defrocked priest living in the Bay Area turned up no evidence of the missing child.

(CNN) -- A girl abducted in 1991 as an 11-year-old has been found alive in California, the El Dorado County sheriff's office said Thursday.

Jaycee Dugard is in good health, the office said in a statement, but provided no details.

Earlier Thursday, Carl Probyn, Dugard's stepfather, told CNN that an FBI agent had called his wife, Terry, on Wednesday afternoon to tell her that Dugard had been found.

The girl was last seen walking to her bus stop in South Lake Tahoe, California, on June 10, 1991, according to the FBI.

At the time, "it was reported that a vehicle occupied by two individuals drove up to Jaycee Dugard and abducted her in view of her stepfather," the El Dorado County sheriff's office said Thursday.

Despite extensive investigations, no sign of her or her possible abductors was ever found, authorities said.

Probyn said Dugard walked into a police station in Northern California earlier Wednesday. He said the FBI agent told his wife that authorities had "Jaycee and the people who she was with."

He said no further details were provided, and that the conversation with the FBI agent was brief.

"It was short and sweet, and 'Can you fly up here?'" he said.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's office has scheduled a news conference for 3 p.m. (6 p.m. ET) to discuss the case.

Probyn said his wife, who is flying Thursday from Southern California to meet with Dugard, spoke to her on Wednesday.

"Jaycee remembers everything," he said. "They talked back and forth and she had the right answers to all my wife's questions."

He said, "I would say it's a 99 percent chance it's her. I'm feeling great! ... It's like winning the lotto."

It has been claimed that she was abducted by two individuals, a male and a female) who were driving a car. Missing girl 'found 18 years on'

Jaycee Lee Dugard was said to have been grabbed off the street

A woman who walked into a US police station claiming she was kidnapped 18 years ago is likely to be telling the truth, police in California say.

DNA tests were being carried out, local police said, with officers almost certain that the results will back up the woman's story.

Jaycee Lee Dugard disappeared in 1991, aged 11, from outside her Lake Tahoe home, apparently taken by two men.

Two men are reported to have been taken into custody, US reports say.

Police in California are due to hold a news conference later on Thursday, at which there is widespread expectation they will formally confirm that Ms Dugard is alive and well.

Her stepfather, Carl Probyn, told ABC News in the US that her family is now convinced that she has been found.

"I had personally given up hope," he said, saying that he just wanted to find the people responsible.

According to the Associated Press news agency, Mr Probyn was watching back in 1991 as the young girl was taken away by two unidentified men.

The FBI has told his wife that Ms Dugard and the men she was with are all with them, Mr Probyn told ABC News.

"She sounds like she's okay," he said.

"She had a conversation with my wife and she remembers things. I hope she's been well treated this entire 18 years."

Suspect Identified in Dugard Kidnapping Case
 Tina Tedesco     32 mins ago

EL DORADO COUNTY, CA - We now know the name of one of the two people in custody for the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard. Phillip Garrido is a 58-year-old man whose last known address is in Contra Costa County in the town of Antioch.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's office is confirming that kidnap victim, Jaycee Lee Dugard, had been located in good health in the Bay Area.

Jaycee was abducted on June 10, 1991 from South Lake Tahoe. At that time, it was reported that a vehicle with two people inside, drove up to her and grabbed her.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Department and FBI are planning to hold a news conference Thursday at 3 p.m. to discuss the missing person case of Jaycee Dugard.

News10 will live stream the presser as it happens on News10.net.

Dugard's stepfather Carl Probyn told News10 last night that family members believe authorities found the now 29-year-old girl alive.

"It's an absolute miracle if it is her...can you imagine this after 18 years?," Probyn said in a telephone interview.

The amazing news of Dugard's return came after a Concord police officer confirmed to News10 that local agencies were investigating the claims of a woman who allegedly walked into a Contra Costa County law enforcement office Wednesday and said she was kidnapped 18 years ago.

Dugard's stepfather, Carl Probyn, told KTVU that the girl’s mother Terry Probyn is on her way to meet the woman who is likely her daughter after getting a phone call from federal agents on Wednesday.

"She got a call from the FBI, they said they had found Jaycee and she was alive," Probyn told KTVU. "My wife talked with her and is convinced she is Jaycee. Jaycee remembers everything."

Terry Probyn then phoned Carl, her former husband, according to KTVU. The pair broke up after the abduction.
