Med Student Worked "About 5 Feet" From Him; Says He Seemed Normal; At Time, Cops Say, Annie Le's Body Was Stashed Behind Wall

(CBS)  Even after Yale graduate student Annie Le disappeared last week, the laboratory where she was last seen remained open, and people were working even while her body was, police say, secreted behind a basement wall in the building.

Police have arrested lab technician Raymond Clark III in Le's murder.

CBS News Correspondent Randall Pinkston spoke to a medical student who, like Le, worked alongside Clark. She requested that CBS News obscure her face and voice.

Friday night, three days after Le vanished, and before her body was found, the woman says she was in the basement, about five feet from him for roughly three minutes.

"He appeared very relaxed, very normal," the woman told Pinkston. "I didn't sense any anything different in his behavior from what I'd observed previously."

Only essential personnel could access the basement lab, by swiping key cards at multiple access points, Pinkston points out. The area was highly secured. And researchers typically worked alone.

thanks...I'll bet this girl got a bad case of the shivers when she found out he has been arrested!!

TY NoRose.  I'm glad you read it too!  I can't rely on my memory.

FOX just showed Clark at his arraignment.

Lab tech arraigned in Yale murder

http://www.wptv.com/content/breakingnews/story/Raymond-Clark-annie-le-yale-murder-arraignment/_oWlTgP1fka3cSZ4XYgn8g.cspx

NEW HAVEN, CT-- A lab technician charged with murdering a Yale grad student has been arraigned.

Raymond Clark III kept his head bowed during the three-minute appearance. The accused killer of 24-year-old Annie Le did not enter a plea. He said "yes, your honor" when asked if he understood his rights.

The judge set bail at $3 million.

Clark was arrested Thursday at a hotel and charged with murdering Le, whose body was found stuffed in the wall of a research building on what would have been her wedding day.

Police say it was a case of workplace violence, but didn't elaborate.

Clark was sent to a holding cell. His next court date is Oct. 6

n a statement Yale University President Richard Levin said he was "relieved and
encouraged by this progress in the investigation."

"It is frightening that a member of our own community might have committed this terrible crime. But we must not let this incident shatter our trust in one another," Levin said.

Levin will be making a statement to reporters at 11:30am.

Widawsky to avoid holiday services

Updated: Thursday, 17 Sep 2009, 11:09 AM EDT
Published : Thursday, 17 Sep 2009, 11:06 AM EDT

Huntington, N.Y. (AP) - Relatives of the man who lost his fiancee to a killer at Yale University say they will observe this month's Jewish holidays in private as they grieve for her.

The family of Jonathan Widawsky said Thursday that they will not attend services for the "foreseeable future" at their temple on New York's Long Island.

They said they want to "facilitate the safety, security and sensitivity" of services at Temple Beth El.

Three million seems rather low, considering some of the other bail amounts we have seen.

I agree Kat Gram.  I hope a media hungry bail bondsman doesn't swoop in.

http://www.courant.com/news/connecticut/yale-annie-le/hc-raymond-clark-arrest-arraigned-annie-le-yale,0,5017178.story

Andrew Grocki, 49, of Newington, was in the lobby of the motel to meet someone on business when he saw the team of law enforcement officers come in the rear door of the motel and go up the back stairs. An officer prevented anyone from going up the stairs, Grocki said. About 10 minutes later, they brought Clark down in handcuffs. He was wearing a striped white golf shirt.

Clark looked "just somber. Head down," Grocki said.

Four officers surrounded Clark and escorted him out a back door and into an unmarked vehicle with tinted windows.

At a press conference in New Haven, Police Chief James Lewis said an arrest warrant was signed around 8:10 a.m. for Clark. Bail was set at $3 million and the arrest warrant has been sealed, Lewis said.

He was arraigned in Superior Court in New Haven shortly after 10:30 a.m. Clark was brought in to the courtroom wearing leg shackles. He looked pale, and when Judge Jon C. Blue asked if he had been read his rights, Clark said "Yes, sir."

The bail commissioner told the judge that Clark does not have any prior criminal history, and based on that, he recommended Clark's bail be dropped to $1 million. Beth Merkin, Clark's public defender, asked the judge to adopt the bail commissioner's recommendation. She said Clark refused to answer the bail commissioner's questions about his prior criminal history under the advice of his attorney.

But Blue kept Clark's bail at $3 million, citing the serious nature of the case.

Blue then transferred the case to the Part A courtroom in New Haven, where more serious cases are heard. The case was continued to Oct. 6.

It did not appear that there were any family members — either of Clark or Le — in the courtroom.

At 10:40 a.m., members of the public and the media watched judicial marshals load Clark onto a prisoner van. Some jeered as the van pulled away.

Nora Stowers of New Haven watched as Clark was taken away. She said her nephew went to high school with Clark and that he was an "all-American boy," or "the boy next door."

Because the arrest warrant is sealed, Lewis said at the press conference, he could not discuss its contents. But he said police interviewed about 150 people and sifted through nearly 300 pieces of evidence.

In his request to seal the arrest warrant affidavit, New Haven State's Attorney Michael Dearington wrote that the investigation is continuing and that release of the documents "could be adversely affected by disclosure of the affidavit at this time."

Yale University Police Chief James Perrotti, FBI Special Agent Kim Mertz and Public Safety Commissioner John A. Danaher stood by Lewis as he spoke.

Seperating the Fact From Fiction in the Yale Murder Case
by Rick Leventhal

One of the challenges in covering a fast-moving story like the murder of Yale grad student Annie Le is separating rumor from fact and getting confirmation of developments in time for our often hourly live on-the-air updates.

Many but not all of the rumors in this case have proven true, including the fact that a lab technician has emerged as the “person of interest”, which as far as I can tell is modern time’s politically correct terminology for “suspect”.

Rumors that proved untrue: Annie’s body was in the trash compactor, and the prime suspect was a student.

Things I’ve heard and have been reported but police won’t confirm: Raymond Clark had scratches on his chest and failed a lie detector test; the blood-stained clothes found in the lab are his; he was angry at Annie for her treatment of lab animals, specifically mice and exchanged emails with her about the issue.

We’ve worked more than 60 hours over the past four days and still have a few hours left on this shift. It seems every time we think we’re done for the night there’s a new development and we have to rush back on the job. We’re all pretty beat but committed to seeing this story thru to it’s conclusion, hopefully the arrest of Annie’s killer.

I had to step away, I'm appreciative of all the articles.   Police say it was a case of workplace violence, but didn't elaborate.  I just have a feeling there is more then workplace violence, imo.

I haven't commented on this case yet.  I am afraid we are about to see the first test of the concept that animals and people are equally important.  I may be totally wrong about this.  But, early reports were that Annie's murderer was upset at her treatment of the mice and that many members of his family work at the lab.  I find this so upsetting and concerning.
