CBB, I don't want to see anything concerning Genealogy.  I spent Tuesday in the courthouse in Shenandoah County, VA trying to get copies of deeds, marriage licenses, wills etc.  They would not let me copy anything.  Said the Library of Virginia is putting everything on their site for "sale".  All I was able to do is get the deed book name, page numbers etc.  I contacted the Library of Virginia yesterday and they emailed me the form to get copies of those records.  Guess what it is going to cost me to get these copies?  $25 for each request.  Each request consists of only one person's name and only for one category.  So I have 3 different persons name with 3 different catagories.  $25.00 x 9 = $225.00.  WOW.  I emailed them and ask them to verify that I was correct and didn't they consider this expensive to the average person to be able to get copies of "public records".  No response from them yet.  It is unimaginable how our state governments are milking the public for what should be public records.  I found boxes in the courthouse dated back to 1779 that I opened one box and found my ancestor.  A lady came over and told me I wasn't suppose to be in those boxes and I had to put it back.  I told her to let me read it since it was my ancestor and she said NO.  I was so mad.  She said the Library of Virginia were copying those records and when it appeared on their website I could order the microfilm copy of them.  Another $25.00 for records that are suppose to be public.

I did get to go to the Powell Big Fort valley where my ancestors came from.  It was beautiful.  It is still very isolated located between 2 mountains and no cell phone coverage at all.  I loved it.  Best part of my trip.  Now I hope I have more luck in Jonesborough, TN at their courthouse.

Too bad you couldn't sneak pics with your cellphone, at least you'd be able to read some of the docs. I can't believe she wouldn't even let you read them! Are they that hard up for money??!! Can you send someone else back in for you? There's gotta be a way!!

Blue Moon,
I am sorry to hear that you ran into the greed train while on your family quest. I see more and more states doing this as their budgets get tighter and tighter. I know a few years ago while in NJ I paid like 15 cents a copy after I found what I wanted. Then I ran up aganist they couldn't copy or let me take picture of some of the docs. As they were so old and they were afraid the light would destory them. But I know my cousin paid $$  for ancestors Revolutionary war records. Good luck with your records from TN. It is so cool when we find our ancestors.

I looked for a thread for this poor young lady but couldn't find one.  If anyone can find one, can you put it where it belongs.  I'm going to go puke my guts out now.

I traveled over 400 miles to do this research.  I even called them ahead of time and not once did they fill me in this.  I had my camera but no flash was allowed and mine is auto flash so I knew they would have a fit when the flash went off.  The records date from 1750-1800 and they are fragile.  I know that and understand it.  But the cost of copies that I have already looked up and provided them with the info is just outrageous.  I don't know anyone who could do this for me.  I did talk to a lady in Shenandoah county who does research and she would charge me about $25/hour to get those copies.  She said she has a camera that will take a picture of the whole document.  I think at this point it would be cheaper to let her do it for me than going through the Library of Virginia.  I am not a rich person and that amount is too much for my blood.

I will trade you family trees.  I am stuck in Ireland where a church has been burnt to the ground 3 times even paid a researcher over there and he hit the same brick wall on hubys side... a dead end.  My side  found documents in poland and paid 230 Euro to get church records sent.  I do not read polish and as they go back a few generations they switch to cyrilliac Russian.  Can not find anyone alive that can still read it.
