Afternoon everyone.

I wish I were in Germany today, and I have never wanted to be there before.  I think I need to take another blood pressure pill and think good thoughts.....

At age 109, she's still a great sport
Eldest person at Senior Games has a ball

MONTGOMERY — Gripping a putter firmly in her hands, Anna Ferris focuses her pale blue eyes on the golf ball that's sitting near her feet.

She pulls the putter back and then pushes it forward. The dimpled ball hops slightly and then rolls. It's headed toward the hole. Straight as a ruler. Looks like a perfect shot.

The ball hits the lip of the hole and pops out. Anna smacked it too hard. She winces and pumps her clenched fist in anger.

That's the marvel of Anna Ferris. Even at the age of 109, she wants to win every event at the Orange County Senior Games.

"You do the best you can," Anna says, as a group of much- younger senior citizens congratulates her. "I've gotta keep going, keep kicking."

Anna was the eldest of dozens of senior citizens who competed in the annual games Saturday at Thomas Bull Memorial Park.

She was born Feb. 11, 1900, in New York City, before the vacuum cleaner, radio or crossword puzzle were invented.

She lived much of her adult life in Teaneck, N.J., before moving to Washingtonville in 2005 to live with her grandson, Joe Begendorf.

Anna carries the seasons lightly for her age. Family and friends say she walks around the house and sometimes does laps with her walker around the driveway to keep her legs strong.

"She's doing this well because we try to keep her out of the wheelchair as much as possible," said Begendorf, who helped steady his grandmother Saturday during each athletic event.

Anna gobbles up chocolate and loves good wine. Last New Year's Eve, she toasted 2009 by holding a glass of white wine high above her head at 1 a.m.

But the public legend of Anna Ferris began at last year's Senior Games when she finished the 100-meter dash with support only from her walker.

"When they said she was going to race last year, we thought it was a joke," said Anne Coon, co-chairman of the games. "She walked away with a whole chest full of medals by the end of the day."

On Saturday, Anna threw a softball 16 feet and used a metal bat to hit a softball 15 feet off a tee. She threw a football more than 9 feet. She scored 10 points in "crazy water bocce."

She even tried soccer. Her first two kicks landed short of the goal and Anna shook her head in disappointment. But her third try rolled gently into the back of the net. That's when Anna Ferris, all 109 years of splendor and life, smiled with the excitement of a little girl.

I am going out with the dog to take some more pictures for JSM.  Also curious how the tree with the mystery boring creature is doing.  It will also take my mind off things while I wait.

It is 48 F here right now so a bit chilly, I need to go find a sweater before our walk.  They just said snow Friday morning.  How very special as I still have some of my garden to finish getting in.
