Full Contents of Haleigh Mystery Letter Revealed

Gary Detman  Erich Spivey     Created: 9/29/2009 3:43:29 AM    Updated: 9/29/2009 4:56:56 AM

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL -- The letter dropped off at the St. Augustine Record by a mystery woman provided investigators with step by step instructions to find the grave of Haleigh Cummings.

The St. Augustine Record, our news partner, has now published the entire contents of the letter it received last week.

Investigators on Monday said the letter contained specific information about a site where Haleigh may be buried.

The St. Augustine Record reports in today's edition just how specific:

"Check the back of father's mobile home. From the right end of the mobile home extending out continue for 540 yards straight. At that point go north 12 yards. Dig 2-3 feet, will strike metal covering an old well, check inside, black plastic garbage bag. Circumstances extend statewide and beyond."

The typewritten letter, according to the St. Augustine Record, is signed by the initials "SAM."

Investigators told First Coast News they searched the area but nothing came up. The Putnam County Sheriff's Office also said the area had been searched before.

A woman dressed in what appeared to be blue hospital scrubs handed the letter to the receptionist at the St. Augustine Record on Sept. 23.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office said Monday the woman told investigators she worked as a messenger for an older man who had once been an FBI informant. The unidentified woman also told investigators the man had some "special abilities." Capt. Dick Schauland, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, wouldn't elaborate on whether those abilities meant "psychic abilities."

"We have not talked to him," said Schauland. "We've asked her to bring him in. I don't know if she'll be able to or not."

Haleigh Cummings has been missing since the night of Feb. 9. Misty Croslin-Cummings told detectives she put Haleigh to bed around 8 p.m. The teen wife of Haleigh's father said she woke up around 3 a.m. and noticed Haleigh had disappeared.

'Mystery letter' leads nowhere

Searchers following directions find no sign of HaLeigh's gravesite
By RICHARD PRIOR  |   More by this reporter  |  richard.prior@staugustine.com  |   Posted: Tuesday, September 29, 2009 ; Updated: 12:05 AM on Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Searchers following the directions in a letter brought to The St. Augustine Record last week couldn't find what the tipster promised: HaLeigh Cummings' grave, supposedly a few hundred yards from her home.

"Detectives thoroughly followed up on the information provided, but the tip did not lead to HaLeigh," Capt. Dick Schauland with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said Monday. "They had cadaver dogs down there.

"This is an area that had been searched prior, also, it turned out. They had cadaver dogs down there earlier also.

"So it's been searched really well."

Rick Ryan, chief of staff with the sheriff's office, emphasized that officers "checked the area very well ... over two separate days."

A blond woman wearing blue scrubs and sunglasses dropped the anonymous letter off at The Record building on Sept. 23.

Below the typewritten directions is a rectangular box representing the Satsuma trailer HaLeigh Cummings was living in on Feb. 9, the night she disappeared.

Broken lines lead off to the side of the drawn trailer. More broken lines lead upward, then stop at a circle.

"Check the back of father's mobile home," the letter read. "From the right end of the mobile home extending out continue for 540 yards straight. At that point go north 12 yards. Dig 2䈏-3 feet, will strike metal covering an old well, check inside, black plastic garbage bag.

"Circumstances extend statewide and beyond."

The typed initials at the bottom are "SAM."

The woman who dropped off the letter went to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office on Friday when she learned that investigators wanted to talk to her.

She told detectives that she dropped the letter off for someone else, an elderly man who had been an FBI informant "with special abilities," Schauland said Monday.

"SAM" was the informant's code name, the woman wrote in an e-mail to the paper on Saturday.

The sheriff's office last week asked that The Record not publish the location given in the letter, for fear of creating a "media circus" while officers tried to conduct a search.

Ryan said Monday that he no longer objected to publishing the content since officers had "thoroughly" combed the site.

Officials estimate that they have received more than 4,000 tips in the case.

HaLeigh Ann-Marie Cummings was 5 years old when she disappeared from her father's blue doublewide trailer in the Hermit's Cove area of Putnam County.

The daughter of Ronald Cummings and Crystal Sheffield has blond hair and brown eyes. She was 3 feet tall and weighed 39 pounds at the time of her disappearance.

Sheffield lives in Glen St. Mary in Baker County.

Cummings was working as a crane operator at PDM Bridge in Palatka the night of Feb. 9.

Misty Croslin, Cummings' girlfriend at the time and now his wife, was at home with HaLeigh and her 3-year-old brother.

Croslin told investigators that she put the little girl to bed at 8 p.m. because it was a school night. She said she last saw HaLeigh around 10 p.m. and went to bed herself between 10:30 and 11.

Croslin, 17, said she woke to get a drink of water shortly before 3:30 in the morning. She saw a light on in the kitchen. A cinder block, or brick, had been laid against the back door, propping it open, she said.

She reported the disappearance to 911 Dispatch at the sheriff's office at 3:27 the morning of Feb. 10, just as Cummings was getting home from work.

Those with information about the case should call the CrimeStoppers tip line at (888) 277-8477 or the Sheriff's Office at (386) 329-0808.

So that letter was written by a psychic?   Wow.   I wonder if the guy actually wanted the blonde woman to deliver it - or if she went to his website and typed out his prediction and turned it in to the newspaper.  IIRC, there was a former FBI employee who had his own website and made predictions on missing person cases.   I believe he was convinced that Caylee was in the water/swamp North of Orlando, inside a suitcase,  and made that prediction on his website.  Does anyone else remember this?

Morining everybody!  I wonder if...Ron is more street smart than we think?  Did he really realize Misty is to blame for H's disappearance?  Did he know she wasn't home and played along with her lies?  Maybe he was aware of the party or she went somewhere with his permission but not exactly knowing where with the intentions of bringing him party favors home and he may be responsible for letting them go out (or Misty by herself while kids slept) for a quick drug run?  He could've married her just to let her think he believed her until he could find out where his daughter was.  Is this why TN looks like she wants to blurt out the truth or something other than "we know Misty was home in bed with the kids"?  If Ron isn't involved I just have a hard time believing that his backing Misty is what he really feels.

I've wonder the same thing melisb.

Something peculiar is going on.

Ron has stated that one of the detectives informed him that he should marry Misty. I don't know if that was to keep Ron from being charged with statutory rape or for some other reason.

Then there has been Ron's inconsistencies, saying one thing on NG and other interviews and then saying something totally different to Tim Miller and others off camera.

There is something fishy going on. imho

LLM Papa says:

I just ran across the following post, however I am not vouching for its credibility, just passing on.

I'm going to post one paragraph from an e-mail I received a couple of months ago from a local who knows an employee of PDM. This PDM employee works there now as well as in February when RC was there.

Quote
The clock in system that they have for employees NOW is a whole lot different than what they had back in February!!!!  Now they have a laser time card where you have to insert the last four digits of your S.S. # and then SCAN your entire hand.  Quite sophisticated stuff NOW.  However....back in February, they had a time card that was done on the computer and it DID NOT ALWAYS WORK.  It was common for workers to have to go back and 'clock' in when the computer was back up and running or to have co-workers do it for them, if they were busy.  I asked if it was possible back then for workers to slip in or out and he quickly said, "oh yeah, no problem, guys did it all the time."  There is parking that isn't within the gated/guard area, down by heavy fabrication, but not many people use that area to park in.
