Thanks JSM and Fanny    I just have a overwhelming doom and gloom over me, because the last time my mom and dad both came to visit, I never saw my mom alive again. Hopefully it is just depression, and not some sign of something  Yes, I really need to go home, this being here is not working. Well, I couldn't find what I needed at Target, so have to go to Home Depot. Did get the Halloween candy though, it sure seemed expense, more so this year when I saw the cost
I have those feelings of gloom sometimes No Rose, I think you just have a lot on your plate and I am sorry about your mom. Go to Wisconsin if that is what makes you feel better.

PS, I thought of you last night when I was watching Cops. Some guy was doing circles on a bicycle in front of the HOA house. He was pizzed that the HOA guy yelled/pushed at his wife. The guy on the bike had two times over the legal limit so he was arrested for DWB (driving while bicycling).  Monkey Devil!      Thanks JSM  I was watching the news and a guy was arrested for being drunk riding a lazy boy recliner, he actually put a motor on it somehow and went to the bar
I saw that guy's chair on The Smoking Gun. He had a beer holder on it, and Nascar stickers on the back.  Monkey Devil!

In our house also    My dad sneezed eight times in a row, I think that was a record. The weather is so strange, at 6am when I walked Zoe, it was so foggy it was dripping off my hair, and today it will be 83 degrees, tomorrow 88  My dad leaves early Tuesday morning, and he is taking the heat with him I guess, because it will go to the low 70's and 60's. I will be more at ease as soon as I know he lands safely in Milwaukee, and then a very lovely couple in the neighborhood who are very good friends, she will pick my dad up. Then I must plan to go see him, and watch him in his home, the house is too big and so is the yard, and he is so stubborn, I'm afraid to mention a nice assisted living apt, he will not take kindly to that. I have to figure some way to deal with this topic. He won't even have someone come and help clean  He has been told repeatedly to not shovel by me, so he has a person do it, and then goes out because it isn't good enough. Help would be appreciated, for any suggestions. I have to leave in awhile to go to the store.
OK, experience talking here:

If you know he won't go into assisted living (and do be sure to ask him...you never know, he may have changed his mind) then don't bother stirring the pot with that. Tell him that in order for him to remain in his own home (which is a very important thing to seniors) he must allow some things to happen. Those things should include:

Having someone come in once a week to clean, even if it's only the kitchen and bath. Frequently, seniors' eyesight is poor, they don't see the dirt.

Making some arrangements for meals on wheels or lunches at the local senior center.

Getting the local senior center to send someone out to put the storm windows up, do the shoveling CORRECTLY (tell him to give the guy a chance to do it the way Dad wants it done, which means more than one visit. Who knows, maybe they'll bond over the shovel!).

Check into the local senior center. Most of them will provide folks to do these chores at no cost to your dad.

Make sure your family has powers of attorney, both for health and general in place. If he hasn't done that yet, con him into it. Someone needs to be able to make decisions and legal things for him.

At the very least, make sure there are neighbors who will look in on him.

I know, for you it would be easier for your peace of mind to know that he's taken care of in some facility. But, try to look at it from his point of view. He's a grown man who has managed to take care of himself for this long. And, most seniors want to stay in the home that they've worked so hard for. They do best at home, not in the facility. For some, a trip to the facility is all they need to give up on living. They feel like everything has been taken from them.

Whatever you do, don't treat him like a child. That will only anger him and make the whole situation more contentious. And more more stressful! Try to have the conversation in a very even tone. Try ASKING him what he'd like to do. If he wants to stay at home, tell him fine, but you have to agree to the above items. Somehow, you have to make him feel like he's making the decision. Good luck!!

TEVYE, You are a wise woman, and have been my hero for a long time.

I am feeling a little under the weather this afternoon, and think I am going to call it a day early.
I hope everyone's teams win today/tonight.

Good night my monkey friends.  an angelic monkey

Very good advice, Tevye.    Especially the part about making dad think he's made the major decisions.

NoRose - a trip back home would probably be good for you.   Maybe it will make your hubby and kids appreciate you more.  Big hugs.     an angelic monkey

Fanny - good night - hope you feel better.

Why thank you, Miss Fanny! You need some chicken soup. c'mon over, I have like 3 batches of it! People must think that a bewb-ectomy requires chicken soup. I give them points for trying, but really, folks, it's CHOCOLATE for a bewb-ectomy, chicken soup for a cold!

Hope you and yours are feeling better.

I was at my doctor's office a few days ago to get my seasonal flu vacine.  I didn't intend to get the H1N1 vacine because some years ago I helped register people for the vacine during another swine flu scare.  I think it was in 71-72.  Anyway, when I read the paper I was to have people sign, it listed a number of possible side effects which sounded worse than the flu, including death.  I decided not to get that vacine either.  One of my friends whom I had registered got Guillame-barre' and was very ill in a respirator for some time, although he recovered with some residual nerve ending damage.  But while I was waiting for my shot last week, I read a poster detailing just who could have the vacine.  It said if the vacine was in short supply, young children and pregnant women could have it.  If there is no shortage, everyone else was eligible to get it except those 64 and over.

Is this the first attempt to do away with those of us on Medicare? I wouldn't put it past them.
I'm not sure how to answer your question, but I do believe Fanny was told by the doctor something about not having to get the Swine Flu shot, I'm sure she will say, I thought that if you were around during the first Swine Flu that you have antibodies where you wouldn't need to get it, or I misunderstood the report, which is probably the case  All four times that my husband got a flu shot, he came down with the flu almost right away, but the last flu shot he became very ill and that is when they saw a mass on his lung, so for him that last flu shot saved his life. Me, never had a flu shot, and don't intend to, I'm allergic to so many things, and get weird reactions, that I'm afraid to.

     Interesting thought, BB.

I'm not planning to get the shot either.

Daughter and SIL got the swine flu shot on Friday - when they took their 2-month old baby in for a check-up.   They are allowing anyone with infants in the household to receive the shot.    Some doctors are holding on to the limited supply of shots for such situations.

NRCG~   an angelic monkey   I feel your pain girl!  I just got back 2 weeks ago from Tenn., going thru the same thing. dad is 82, house is too big, yard is out of control, my mother had been a borderline hoarder type and there was stuff in every nook and cranny. He had been taking care of her for 2 yrs before she passed and prior to that never really cleaned or cooked so needless to say it was a mess. He refuses to get a cleaning person, yard guy etc. Says its a waste of money or he doesn't want "strangers" in the house.... my brothers(and wives and old enough kids). who live there are "busy" and know that he has enough money to hire ppl. so they just do nothing. Very frustrating.
this is what I did, went there, literally spent about 10 days cleaning, donating any clothes, furniture, dust collectors, set up the pantry, ditched old food etc. then I called and set up yard service . Basically I guess all I could persuade him to do is accept help and I think he understood how off the charts it had gotten when he saw how long it took to get things back to normal. He's not at the stage where he needs assisted living but he does need assistance if that makes sense.  I've accepted that I'll just need to make it my business to make the trip from CA. every 3 months or so and do maintenance until he literally can't be there by himself. It's hard to come up with ideas that will work without making them feel helpless and making us nuts!  Good luck, take valium kitty with you.    j
