Trader will shock drunks who use shop front as an outdoor toilet
Oct 23 2009

A FURIOUS trader will give drunken revellers the shock of their lives if they continue urinating against his shop front.

Businessman John O'Connor said he could no longer put up with his premises being used as an outdoor toilet by late-night partygoers.

The 46-year-old will now tackle the anti-social behaviour by wiring up an electric current on the pavement outside his music shop in County Clare, in the Irish Republic.

An angry Mr O'Connor said his shop was not a dumping ground and warned revellers should zip-up or face the shocking consequences.

"If anybody persists and continues with the anti-social behaviour they'll get a shock, they'll know all about it," he said.

The trader, who operates Custy's Traditional Music Shop hidden away on a narrow lane off Ennis main street, said his business has been a popular spot for drunken revellers to relieve themselves.

Frustrated and angered by the flood of vandalism, a friend gave him an electric box with a cable coming from it and five wires.

They spread across the pavement immediately in front of his shop and will give anyone who comes near it an electric jolt.

"The wires are on the ground where I'm greeted every Monday morning with pools of their urine, mounds of their faeces," he said.

"You can see it (wires), it's pretty obvious what's there. There are signs everywhere.

"Last Monday morning the place was destroyed. Urine had seeped into the door jam. I was greeted by a flood of urine inside on the carpet and lino, I had to clean it up for about an hour."

Mr O'Connor has spent around 3000 euro putting in CCTV cameras and other security devices to deter the revellers.

"I just said, look I've been doing this for years. I've tolerated it but you come to a certain stage that when you're greeted with this you just say enough is enough.

"These people have to be confronted.

"There has to be consequences as to what you do."

Northern, that story made me almost pee in my pants. Good for the guy to take action against drunks.  Monkey Devil! I'm sure he will be prosecuted for violating the drunkards civil rights though.

mizjay and Tevye thank-you very much for the advise. Everything is taken care of legally, I have power of attorney, he did say once a week he will eat at the senior citizen center uptown, which I thought was a huge deal  He is very clean and has things in order, though I do know it is dusty. The shoveling well that is pointless, he has been doing that forever, after the shoveler gets done, he goes out to finish  there are neighbors and friends that call and check in and he goes out to eat every couple of weeks with some of them. Thank-you all for the advise.

No Rose, it sounds like he has lots of people looking after him up there. That is a good thing. If someone shovels for him, he probably is wanting to use that as an exercise and time outside. So unless you are afraid of him breaking a hip on the ice, I wouldn't worry too much about it. He sounds like he is very strong willed, just like his daughter.    Nothing wrong with that, I am the same way. I think if he is agreeing to going to the senior place, that is a good start. Maybe he will like it and go more than once a week. That's what happened with my Grandma, she didn't want to be around old people, but she ended up enjoying it and going every day.

Here's hoping for a mild winter up that way!   My father fired up his lawn mower a couple days after the yard guys had been there "cause it rained and he would go ahead and get the new growth"  Let go and let God I guess.
Good that he has such nice friends, takes a little of the worry away for you.

Mizjay. Sorry about your mom, it must be hard to deal with older parents. I really don't know what I would do if I was in your and No Rose's position. I am a hard azz to my dad and step mom with their health and getting them to the doctor. My mom, not so much, she is pretty healthy.

How funny she didn't want to be around old people, that's cute. My dad is afraid of the older woman looking for a husband    I'm like I'm sure you can handle that.

No Rose, maybe he is just being adventuresome. JMO I would be more worried if he was staying in the house, not going out, becoming a recluse. From what you have described of him, he is very attentive and smart. Heck he saw Chairman Mao on Glenn Beck by the red phone. I wouldn't have noticed it unless you asked about it.

Is he driving by himself to Michigan? Now that would give me worry if he can't see or is diabetic or gets very confused.

Anyways, I always look at things the same as you, so I can see your worries and concern. My stepdad called this afternoon and told me his BIL took him to the ER yesterday because of his tinnitus and not being able to sleep for days. I asked him where he was, he was driving to my sisters house that is about a 3 hour drive. They gave him different medicine and he felt much better this morning.

Anyways I worry more about your health, than I do your dad's. He sounds to me like he is a tough cookie and you need to worry about yourself more than him. Please don't get mad at me, but I really worry about you. Also, I think your Dad will be fine with all the friends he has. If he didn't have support up in Wisc, then I would worry. JMO JSM
