FDA Allows Use of Experimental Antiviral Drug to Treat H1N1

 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is allowing the use of an experimental antiviral drug to treat severe cases of H1N1 or swine flu.

The drug, Peramivir, is currently being developed by BioCryst Pharmaceuticals Inc. and is undergoing testing required for regular FDA approval.

The FDA issued a so-called emergency use authorization late Friday that allows doctors to use Peramivir, which is delivered intravenously, in certain hospitalized adult and pediatric patients with confirmed or suspected H1N1 influenza.

A handful of doctors have already treated patients with severe cases of H1N1 using Peramivir obtained through the agency's expanded access rules that allow individual patients to obtain experimental drugs if certain conditions are met. The emergency-use authorization allows use of the drug without prior FDA approval.
The FDA said there's only limited clinical data about whether Peramivir is safe and effective, but "based upon the totality of scientific evidence available, it is reasonable to believe that peramivir IV may be effective in certain patients."

The company said it is completing production of approximately 130,000 courses of peramivir and is prepared to make more, if required.

The FDA said Peramivir should only be used in patients who have not responded to or can't take the oral antiviral drug Tamiflu, made by Roche or Relenza, which is an inhaled drug made by GlaxoSmithKline PLC. Like Tamiflu and Relenza, Peramivir works by inhibiting neuraminidase, an enzyme that's involved with the spread of the influenza virus within the body.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asked the FDA to grant Peramivir emergency use to help cope with the influenza pandemic which has killed more than 1,000 people in the U.S. since April and hospitalized thousands more. The CDC will control and track distribution of peramivir to hospitals.

Belated Good Morining everyone! 

MISSION, I saw on either Sommer's or Haleigh's thread yesterday where people were having a problem, and she posted a explanation on one of them how to do it. I haven't tried yet, so I can't help. Glad to see you had a good time at your cooking class!

Son is still home, but his hives are almost gone, and no fever this morning. He is planning on trying to go back to classes tomorrow. I, on the other hand, still don't feel so hot, so I am prolly going to just mostly sit her on laptop in the bed today, and do as little as possible.

I have read back, and wonderful conversations last night about older folks. (Not me, of course!) I have been through it all with my parents, and my hubby's mother is still alive and living in a retirement center apartment. She is in her 80's and we have been through all of the above and more. The only thing is, she doesn't drive, but she is a pistol! The tales I could tell. She lives in Michigan, about 7 hrs away, but most of the rest of the brothers and sisters live nearby, and take care of most of the crisis. We hear about the aftermath. Hubby is her favorite, so he gets the blow by blow from all of them. I just try to keep my mouth out of it and get along with them all.

I haven't read back on the MP threads yet. I'll be sure to go to the Damas thread too. Disgusting human being!

Thank you Fanny  I am glad to hear your son is feeling better but no happy to hear you aren't so you do just exactly what you are doing and that is rest and do as little as possible - we have 4 people out today here at work - either they are suffering from hangovers because Sunday is a big sports day or they are all not feeling well but that is alot out for one day and one other is complaining her stomach hurts........it seems to be making its way around. Rest easy.

I see on Fox New that the White House has FINALLY put a a pink ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I thought the month of October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Good thing they managed to do it the LAST week in October. Do these people ever get anything RIGHT!

Sorry, I am going to answer my own question. I have been waiting since January for just one thing I could be proud of this administration doing. I have not seen it yet!!!

Morning Fanny! Glad son is getting better. I hope you get better soon. I have a meeting tonight and I am not looking forward to it. So, I probably won't be getting home til around 8 pm

Oh, wait, my MIL is only 76....and she is a pistol and a half! Her latest escape scheme involves her wanting to get a job working in the kitchen of another assisted living place...not the one she lives at now. She thinks if she gets a job there, we'll let her move there. This woman has been known to eat other people's leftovers after supper, and to take an especially non-diabetic food item from the trash! Which explains why she wants to work in the kitchen. My SIL is so smart, tho. INstead of telling her mom "No, not gonna happen", SIL got her an application to fill out! It's been 3 weeks and Mom still hasn't filled it out...she can barely write. She doesn't remember all the letters (I have made her so many penmanship charts), so this is a good way of keeping her busy and not dashing her dreams of escape. We have to laugh, and play along with her, otherwise we'd just cry. Alzheimer's can be funny, it just has to be!!!!

That's funny! MIL worked in the kitchen in her center, till she finally had to start walking with a walker she had fallen so many times. She also, is diabetic and loves to eat! No Alzheimer's with her. Her mind is clear as a bell, even though she had brain surgery for a benign tumor pushing on her spinal cord a few years ago. Rehab to learn how to walk, and feed herself again, and then BAM! back to her old self. She still plays bingo every week.

We could at least be Sister of the Heart!
