WHOA!

'09 sees decrease in Putnam crime

By Kristin Chambers
Published: Saturday, November 7, 2009 3:18 AM EST

Crime in Putnam County has decreased significantly so far this year.

According to a report compiled by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, between January and June 2009, overall crime in the county has gone down 20.1 percent from last year.

"In the past year we've had some trying events here, and despite all the events we have dealt with, I attribute it to the district policing concept and the accountability factor that's in place," Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy said. "I was very happy to see that we have a reduction in crime. It shows that what we have put in place is working."

Putnam County had a total of 1,895 crimes recorded between January and June this year. In 2008, there were 2,373 crimes.

In that time period, Palatka had 452 reported crimes.

Palatka Police Chief Gary Getchell said he remains "cautiously optimistic" about the trend.

"It is a pretty big swing for just half a year," Getchell said. "This is something that usually changes over many years."

He attributed the crime reduction to the recession and harder sentencing.

"We know that during a recession certain crimes go up and certain crimes go down," he said. "For example, there has been a reduction of property crime. People think that because the economy's down there will be an increase, but it actually decreases during a recession."

He said the state attorney's office has also been aggressive with prosecutions.

"Criminals have been getting harder sentences and more time in prison," Getchell said.

There were 2,736 arrests made in the county during the first half of 2009, the FDLE said. Last year, there were 2,900 arrests made.

Forcible rape and murder numbers have stayed consistent with numbers from 2008, however burglaries, larcenies and aggravated assault cases have seen a steep decline.

Burglaries were at 624 from 781 last year, and larcenies down to 783 from 1,066.

There have been 279 aggravated assault cases this year compared to a previous 333.

The only increase seen was in the number of robberies reported, with 71 in the first half of 2009 compared to 41 in 2008, the FDLE said.

"We are going to continue our efforts to reduce crime in Putnam County the best that we can and we hope to see this trend continue," Hardy said.

The crime rate might have decreased....but the use of drugs look to me like they have increased
guess the criminals are enjoying their high and not committing crimes.

Seems that MORE AND MORE are going into business for themselves...ie, selling drugs, big profits, no need for thefts.

I'm soooooooooo tired of and disgusted with all the game-playing that has gone on in this case.  I don't care to hear another word out of any of em unless/until it's the actual truth about what happened to Haleigh.

Flash news item for Putnam County, the Croslins and the Cummings:

We demand TRUTH and ACTION for Haleigh!!!
