"The Government must come clean over our future energy bills"

So there could be a 60pc rise in energy bills by 2015 in the worst case scenario, according to Ofgem, the energy regulator.

In the best (and some might say unlikely) case – in which there’s a speedy economic recovery and massive reduction of energy consumption – bills will still go up by 14pc.

I know energy bills are going to rise heftily and, if you’ve been reading the newspapers, so do you. But if you’ve been faithfully following the forecasts of Ed Miliband, the Energy and Climate Change Secretary, you’ll be budgeting for just an 8pc increase over the next decade.
