i was just reading on the one of the blogs following a TV article.  Someone said there is a huge difference between a sexual predator and a sexual offender.  What is the difference in you opinion? I don't see much, but I don't know the technical definition either.
Sounds to me like they are pretty much the same and wiki I thinks agree
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex_offender

A sex offender (also sexual offender, sex abuser, or sexual abuser) is a person who committed a sex crime, although what constitutes a sex crime differs by culture and by legal jurisdiction. In most jurisdictions, offenses include child sexual abuse, downloading child pornography, rape, and statutory rape. In much of the United States, public urination, mooning, streaking, and the failure to prevent one's own teenage children from engaging in otherwise consensual sexual activity also result being designated as a sex offender, requiring registration as such in publicly available, online lists. The term sexual predator is often used to describe severe or repeat sex offenders.

In the United States, United Kingdom, and other countries a convicted sex offender is often required to register with the respective jurisdiction's sex offender registry. These registry databases are frequently accessible to the public through the internet. Sexual offenders are also sometimes classified into levels[1]. The highest level offenders generally must register as a sex offender for their entire lives, whereas low level offenders may only need to register for a limited time. As a label of identity it is used in criminal psychology.

Poor Lisa Rukab, a neighbor of the Thompson just interviewed on NG, stated that they had or were getting a group together to help protect and watch out for the neighborhood children. Lisa stated that they wanted to let the children know that purple (color) was safe to come to.

Well I am sorry to tell Lisa she just alerted and enlightened any and all sex offenders watching NG what color to dress in if they decide to roam around the neighborhood.

I would laugh if this wasn't so sad.

here are the Florida definitions.  The definitions seem to be somewhat different state to state by basically, they are a legal definition.

"1.  What is the difference between a predator and an offender?

A sexual predator is a person who was convicted of a serious sexual crime against a minor (under 18 years of age) or an adult, and who was declared to be a “sexual predator” by the court.  Because these sexual predators are no longer incarcerated, the law (FSS 775.21) requires they initially register with either the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE, Tallahassee), or with the local Sheriff’s Office.  A person classified as a sexual predator is so classified for life, unless his/her civil rights are restored, or the conviction is overturned, or they receive a full pardon.  See F.S.S. 775.21(3) for additional information regarding sexual predators

The sex offender designation applies to any listed sex offense, regardless of the date the offense was committed, for which an offender is being released from prison or probation on or after October 1, 1997. ..."

oh wow - just read in detail your wiki definition and it's really kind of wrong.  I usually like wiki even though some don't, but this sentence:

"In much of the United States, public urination, mooning, streaking, and the failure to prevent one's own teenage children from engaging in otherwise consensual sexual activity also result being designated as a sex offender, requiring registration as such in publicly available, online lists." is simply not true.  Cases such as those are generally pled down to different (non-sexually related charges if any charges at all) charges that carry mostly probation and not subject to registry laws.

I have found that sometimes advocates against sex offender reigstry restrictions will use the ole "don't pee in public, you'll end up on the registry" scare tactics.  This looks just like one of those tactics.

I believe that the difference between sexual predators and sexual offenders is the severity of prior convictions - combined with psych evaluations upon incarceration.

http://jacksonville.com/community/my_clay_sun/2009-10-23/story/somers_slaying_investigaton_narrowing_down_origin_of_trash

Excellent article here. Very long though.

Part of it:

Quote
Investigators know how Somer died based on an autopsy done in Savannah Thursday, but they are keeping those details secret to protect the investigation, Justino said. Somer was initially identified through a birthmark and clothing she was wearing when her body was found.

Funeral arrangements made Friday will involve opportunities for the public to pay their respects, while the family's privacy will also be ensured.

A public viewing will be at the same church from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Orange Park, 1140 Kingsley Ave. A public memorial service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the church. Graveside services and burial will be private, but there will be a procession from Kingsley Avenue to Blanding Boulevard to the property of Jacksonville Memorial Gardens just south of the Orange Park Mall.

Diena Thompson, Somer’s mother, emerged from her home Friday night to tearfully tell dozens of supporters that she wouldn’t be able to view the body.

“They are going to give me a lock of her hair, but I’m not going to be able to see her,” said Thompson, 34. “I wanted to tell somebody that, so maybe it’ll make somebody want to say something if they’ve seen anything. Anything. Somebody please tell.”

Thompson’s boyfriend said Friday night that she was too exhausted to give interviews. A message left for her by the Times-Union was not returned.

Diena has surely been strong throughout this. I am amazed at her strength.

This means the public viewing will be closed casket, I am sure.

How so sad.
