ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- The medical examiner used dental records to confirm that a child found in a Georgia landfill is Somer Thompson, the 7-year-old Orange Park girl who disappeared on her walk home from school.

During a news conference at 4 p.m., a Clay County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said investigators were not releasing the manner or cause of death at this time. She said officials are following many leads and are encouraged, but do not have a person of interest at this time.

She also said state forensic investigators are working in an abandoned house near Somer's school. She said it is near the last place Somer's friends saw her before she disappeared earlier this week.
Authorities made the discovery in a Georgia landfill Wednesday afternoon. They said the body was found in a heap of garbage that was tracked from Somer's hometown of Orange Park.

At a candlelight vigil on Wednesday night, Somer's mother was already bracing for the worst.

"I don't know how I can repay helping to find my baby," mother Diena Thompson said.

Thompson broke down as she thanked neighbors and volunteers for the days-long effort to try to find her daughter. Hundreds of people searched for the missing girl, who disappeared on Monday.

Investigators sifted through the landfill on Thursday, hoping it may hold more clues.

"I believe, the early discovery of the body, that it's going to greatly enhance our investigation," Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said.

Authorities will also continue to talk to registered sex offenders in the area and vowed to find their killer.

"There is a child killer on the loose, and that's why we are going to catch this person and bring them to justice," Beseler said.

Thanks, I had read that the five year old had fallen from her bike and that they and another driver had stopped to make sure she was alright, don't know if that is true.

Considering Somer was deemed a missing person within hours of her disappearance and ... considering Sean Patton was waiting at the end of Somer's mile long journey home and ... considering the number of sex offenders in the area ... why was the pickup of trash and/or recycling in a certain radius of Orange Park not temporarily suspended immediately?

Considering the little girls body was located in such a short period of time ... I would assume that the search was confined to a designated area of each landfill.  Were these areas where trash was dumped ... trash that was picked up from the Orange Park neighborhood when Somer's lived?

His day job is to investigate allegations of misconduct by fellow deputies.

On the side, but still as a cop, he’s a member of the regional Child Abduction Response Team that gets involved in investigating snatchings such as that of Somer Renee Thompson.

Clay County detective Bruce Owen’s idea of searching through Dumpsters and landfills for Somer’s body and evidence has been credited by Sheriff Rick Beseler as a key development in the case. The 7-year-old's body was found in a Folkston, Ga., landfill Wednesday in trash picked up in Orange Park Tuesday.

"I thought that was an outstanding idea," Beseler said this morning. "I believe that body would have been buried under hundreds of tons of debris [and] probably would have gone undiscovered for ever."

But a humbled Owens said today it was all in a day’s work and that his training has taught him that such searches are wise and routinely used when it comes to child-abduction cases.

“There were hundreds of ideas that were being brought to the sheriff’s attention and to all the agency heads,” said Owens, a 10-year police veteran who works in internal affairs. “It just turned out that one of my suggestions happened to be the one that ended up finding her.”

When Somer hadn’t been found by Tuesday morning, Owens said he feared the worst and made the search suggestion to Beseler.

“At that time I realized that this is probably not going to turn out good,” said Owens, 40. “The next thing we need to do is move into another phase. We need to start looking at other avenues. That’s why I brought it to the sheriff’s attention.”

Besler assigned a group of detectives to track trash that had been picked up that day in Orange Park and went to the Rosemary Hill landfill in Green Cove Springs. Some of the trash was also transferred to the Chesser Hill Road Landfill in Folkston.

About 200,000 tons were sifted through at Rosemary Hill and another 100,000 tons in Folkston. Somer’s body was found Wednesday afternoon.

Though pleased his idea had positive results, Owens, who has a child, said he remains saddened by what happened to Somer. He said he hopes his work helps find her killer.

“I could only imagine how vulnerable that we all feel about this,” Owens said. “Any way that we can help … we should help.”

You know.... listening to the questions at the end of the presser just amazes me at how stupid some people can be. The reporter asked the spokes person if they still consider Somer to be a homicide? I had thought that I had read this in other reports, but can't find them.  So I don't know...

Hmm seems the story has some slight variations,like one was a police officer was flagged down,the other was that she stopped at the sheriffs dept on her way home.....

Also ... has it not been previous reported that Sean Patton sent Somer's siblings back out to search for her while he remained at home.

If the above AMW report is correct ... it would appear that Sean Patton would not be a person of interest considering the short time frame between when Somer would have arrived home and ... her siblings shortly after.
