Search for girl missing at St. Martins

Cole County authorities are looking for 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten who was reported missing Wednesday evening.
By Jeff Haldiman
jhaldiman@newstribune.com

It's the worst situation a parent could be in -- a child missing and no one knows where they have gone. That's what unfolded Wednesday evening when nine-year-old Elizabeth Olten didn't show up at her home on Route D near St. Martins, near the intersection with U.S. 50.

Cole County Sheriff Greg White said family members reported the girl left a friend's home around 6:15 p.m. She was supposed to walk back to her home, about a quarter mile away, and was last seen walking along Route D.

Neighbors told reporters that Olten, who attends Pioneer Trail Elementary in Apache Flats, knows the area, and they didn't believe she would simply wander off.

Family members told reporters that Elizabeth is afraid of the woods as well as the dark so she wouldn't be out at night.

Authorities got the call from Elizabeth's family around 7 p.m. and they along with their neighbors began searching nearby yards, fields and ditches using flashlights to help guide their way.

A command post was set up at Xtreme Body and Paint, near the girl's home, and approximately 50 members of various law enforcement and emergency response agencies came to the scene.

Some of the members stayed with the mobile command unit at the post while the rest were sent out to search on foot in an area approximately half-a-mile by half-a-mile in size. Some of these members also carried mobile infra-red units to try to find any heat signatures in the woods.

Later in the evening, a Missouri Highway Patrol helicopter, also equipped with infra-red equipment, searched the area.

Family members told reporters there is a pond in the area and that searchers had been looking around it.

As word got out that Elizabeth was missing, additional neighbors came to the command post offering to volunteer to search. Many of them expressed how much emotion they felt when they heard the girl was missing because they have children of their own and know they could be in the same position as Elizabeth's family.

Sheriff White talked with some of those who offered to volunteer, thanking  them but saying authorities needed to control the number of searchers so they could be monitored on the infra-red equipment.

Elizabeth Olten has long brown hair and was last seen wearing a pink sweater and white shoes.

Anyone with information that could help authorities should contact the sheriff's department at (573) 634-9160.

Right now law enforcement agencies in Cole County are looking for a St. Martins girl, missing since Wednesday evening.

Cole County Sheriff Greg White says 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten went missing around 6:15 p.m. after leaving a friend's house and walking home.  White says Elizabeth was walking a half-mile stretch of Route D just south of Highway 50.

Elizabeth has long brown hair and was wearing a pink sweater, pink butterfly shirt, pink scarf, blue jeans and white sneakers.

The Cole County Sheriff's Department is leading the search.  They are recieving assistance from the Highway Patrol, including a search helicopter.  White says crews are using infrared and thermal technology to search in the dark and to make sure they are covering all possible ground.

The Highway Patrol says it hasn't issued an Amber Alert because there isn't enough evidence to suggest Elizabeth was abducted.

If you see Elizabeth Olten or have any information for law enforcement, call the Cole County Sheriff's Department at (573) 634-9160.

Susie... you are wrong.. I live in Jefferson City, and I have young children. I would not allow my 7 year old daughter out in our own back yard (in the area this little girl is missing from OR here in Central JC) Its just getting to crazy in the world. Elizabeth Olten was last seen walking down highway D and if u look at a map or have traveled this road on any occasion you will know its no place for a child to be walking.. Its curvy and people speed down it often. Its hardly a place for a grown woman or man to be walking. I do pray for her to be returned home safely.

There are some interesting comments at the St. Martins forum on Topix.
http://www.topix.com/forum/city/st-martins-mo/TD0L4C6QKR33PRDIV

One poster claims that a Dale Olten is a suspect in the case of missing Jasmine Haslag from 2 years ago.  Dale Olten and Dale Olten Jr, A father and son from Russellville were indicted by a federal grand jury separate cases for illegally possessing firearms and for possessing stolen firearms

Then another poster, posts "Yes, Elizabeth's father isn't in her life......."

I have no idea if this is all related as have not seen names of her parents in any articles nor do I have any concept of how common the last name Olten is in MO.

Thanks for all the updates, I don't know what to say, except I pray for her safe return. But that pic of that pond sent chills down me.
