Date set for certification hearing in murder case

Juvenile Authority Director Michael Couty held a press conference this morning at the Prenger Juvenile Center announcing the certification hearing will be held on Nov. 18 at 8 a.m. for the 15-year-old girl suspected of killing Elizabeth Olten.

The certification hearing will determine if the 15-year-old will be tried as an adult or as a juvenile. If a judge determines that the 15-year-old should be tried as an adult, more details about the suspect will be made available to the public.

A detention meeting will be held tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. to discuss whether the suspect will remain in the custody of the court or stay at her home until the certification hearing.

Cole County juvenile authorities have asked the Cole County juvenile court to charge the 15-year-old with first-degree murder for Olten’s death.

Police said the suspect was acquainted with Olten and lived in the area.

sorry but NO WAY should anyone charged with 1st degree murder be at home.  Grandma was running a daycare out of her house.  Don't think that is going to go over very well if the community clearly knows who she is.  This is a recipe for disaster if they let her go home.

If you have been reading comments on the local articles the majority are very definite that she should be tried as an adult, and should be getting the death penalty.  The community seems very disgusted by this and want justice.  Some are saying a single bullet will help the court system that is in crisis, others are saying public hanging to set an example.  This will not be a good situation if they let her go home.

Oh yes. The head of the juvie facility has already said there are only 40 beds......   Surely she couldn't be a threat to society now, could she?

The Missouri officials have already let this whole situation get way out of hand and it looks like its gonna get a lot worse. From the Sheriff's office, to the School Board, to the Juvenile division, to the Court system! They have passed this around like a hot potato and it's still in motion. I hardly think it takes over two weeks to certify a juvenile as an adult! A few days, yes. Stall....that's what these cases alway end up doing, and no one wants to take responsibility for any of it. No public statements from officials, no apologies from the girl's family, nothing but rumors and gossip. Twitter...twitter...No wonder the people in the area are so up in arms.

Hi Monkeys!

They only have 40 beds, I say grab a cot and throw it in a corner, that will work. And as far as some in the community screaming the death penalty, that can't happen for one thing, and I frankly will be surprised if she even gets the proper sentence, watch, she is mentally ill, and so they will throw her in an institution to come out when she is rehabilitated. To come out crazier, angrier and eviler than when she was put in

this is stupid as hell.

She needs to be in protective custody.  They can put her in the big people's jail, in protective custody - they've done it before with minors.
