All those reports that there were only 4 houses in between were correct and she never had to cross the highway.  She could walk along the back of the houses by the woodline, or along the front yards and not have to step out on the highway.

Wow, that is scary when your child can't even walk four houses home without worry.

Especially in a nice rural place.  That really rocked my world as that is sort of what it looks like up here with the house and  big lot being 3/4 - 1 acre and woods behind.

I agree, such a false sense of security and I'm guilty of that OR was in the past........FTLOG I just realized she is in elementary school, so it's possible the suspect is too

God, my heart is just absolutely broken.

I've got people on my facebook who never even comment when I post a missing or murdered child - they are commenting today.

is this what it's going to take to get the majority of America (those who are not like us) to wake up and get involved?

This is really, really bad.  Two little girls in one week - and only 100 non-family abductions ending in murder each year?  is 2009 going to be worse than the last years?

Yes more than likely the POI is still in elementary school.  What a shame.  Two young lives destroyed.

Community Supports Grieving Family

ST. MARTINS - Hundreds crowded the VFW post Thursday and Friday to help look for Elizabeth Olten.

Even as the town's hope drained, supporters still scoured the town for any trace. Friday afternoon Olten's body was found. Soon after, the family started receiving sympathy from supporters around the area and far away.

A relative created a Facebook page that has now become a remembrance signed by more than 2,300 people.  http://www.facebook.com/search/?q=elizabeth+olten&init=quick#/pages/Help-find-elizabeth-Olten/177698802291?ref=ss

St. Martins turned from a town praying for the best, to one mourning a loss and offering support as a community unified.

"I am very proud of the community for pulling together and showing support," Peggy Florence said. "When someone goes missing, this is what we need to do, we need to help one another."

Florence started the non-profit Missouri Missing in 2007 after her own daughter went missing. She has been at the side of the Olten family and says she'll continue to provide support for the grieving.

Onna Adrian, whose daughter-in-law was Olten's older sister, said she was overwhelmed by the community's support.

"It's wonderful, it's amazing what people will do when you've got a little kid missing and it doesn't matter whose kid it is," Adrian said. "People have showed up at the house asking, 'how can I help?'"

A juvenile the police are calling a "person of interest" is in custody. Cole County sheriffs will hold a press conference Saturday at 11 a.m. at the VFW post in St. Martins where they will have more details about the case.

My families farm is 460 acres...and at one time, we had 4 houses....3 doublewides and the family home.  We were all close but far enough, that I could see my brothers lights thru the woods.  I could see the top of my sisters house, and if I walked alittle up the hill I could see the back of my parents house.
I am bringing this up, because, if you dont live in the country, you might think something is so very far apart, when really, its not.
This person of interest is a neighborhood person, and what some may thing is a far distance, in country life is not.
My children and My nieces and nephews were never close to a road.
However we did network, everyone knew when someones child was on the move.

I HATE what has happened.

I've been wondering if someone hadnt been threatning Elizabeth, and maybe thats the note the person gave to the Sherriffs department, you know how Elementary Shcool kids pass notes back and forth, maybe this kid wrote either Elizabeth a note and she left it somewhere and this person took it to the cops or the suspect wrote the person that took it to Cops.........also I would like to say that my Friend has a son that at the age of 13 is 6ft3 and wieghs in at 208, so a child of around that age if built like her son could have defianaitly done this awful thing.....

Olten Death Investigation Continues
Person of interest, a local juvenile, in custody.Posted by Adam Forgie on Fri Oct 23, 2009

The family of Elizabeth Olten is speaking out about her death, and their grief.

We talked to Elizabeth's sister-in-law, Liza Adrian, who told us more about her personality, "She was a wonderful, happy, shy child. I never saw her argue with her mother, sister, or anyone. She was always helpful with taking care of my kids, and her sisters kids. She enjoyed going over to sleepover's with my niece."

Just before 3 p.m. Friday afternoon, investigators found Elizabeth's body deep in a wooded area. The area was near where the search started Wednesday afternoon when Elizabeth was first reported missing.

We don't know much about the person in custody, but authorities were able to tell us that it is an older juvenile, from the area, and the person knew Elizabeth.

Hundreds of volunteers spent the morning, and all day Thursday looking for Elizabeth.

We learned that authorities got their leads from written letters and other physical evidence.

That led them to the person of interest, who then led authorities to the body.

"Through some analysis of the evidence, in all honesty some written evidence, we were able to develop a person of interest," says Cole County Sheriff Greg White. "Once we reached that person, they ultimately led us to Elizabeth's body," he said.

Sheriff's deputies aren't saying the exact spot where her body was found.

"It was signifficantly away from the house, but where we started the search process, but it was back in that area very deeply," White said.

They also found Elizabeth's cell phone, which they pinged to help find her location.

They are saying too much about the suspect, because it is a juvenile. Deputies say they want to get the prosecutor involved so proper charges can be filed.

There is a way you can help the family, they have set up a fund:

Police find body of missing 9-year-old Mo. girl
Published: October 24, 2009 3:00 a.m.
ST. MARTINS, Mo. – The body of a missing 9-year-old girl was found in a wooded area near Missouri's capital city on Friday, two days after she was last seen walking from a neighbor's home, police said.

Cole County Sheriff Greg White said a juvenile, described as a "suspect," was taken into custody. The juvenile was acquainted with the girl, Elizabeth Olten, White said.

The sheriff did not give any details on how Elizabeth died or about the juvenile in custody except to say that the person lived in the area west of Jefferson City and was older than the girl. Police said Elizabeth's body was found just before 3 p.m.
"We were able to obtain some physical evidence and through some analysis of some of the evidence and in all honesty some written evidence, we were able to develop a person of interest," White said. "Once we reached that person and interviewed them, ultimately they led us to where we've recovered Elizabeth's body."

Elizabeth, of St. Martins, was last seen when she started walking home from a neighbor's house on Wednesday evening, police have said.

White said had spoken with Elizabeth's mother and said the family is "deeply grieving."

"I'm a parent, and I know how I would feel. I would simply leave it to you that they are grieving," he said.

Elizabeth's family and friends have described her as a bashful fourth-grader - the youngest of five children - who loved cats but was afraid of the dark and would not normally have gone into the woods. Some of her family members had spent Friday making buttons with Elizabeth's photo, before learning of her death.

"She was a wonderful, happy, shy child. I never saw her argue with her mother, her sister or anyone," said Liza Adrian, the sister-in-law of Elizabeth's sister, who spoke on behalf of the family during a Friday night news conference.

Elizabeth's father, Dale Olten Sr., learned of her death while watching TV in prison, where he is serving a four-year sentence for drug possession, said family friend Nancy Hanks, who had aided in the search.
"On behalf of the Oltens, I guarantee they appreciate this community - all the outpouring of support - they worked hard" searching for Elizabeth, Hanks said.

Elizabeth's aunt, Vicki Olten, described her niece as an "angel" but declined further comment.

Earlier Friday, about 70 people had searched for Elizabeth on horseback, with all-terrain vehicles and on foot while another 70 investigators checked leads, White said. Several hundred people had joined the search Thursday despite a steady rain and rough terrain.

Police focused their search area after they figured out roughly where Elizabeth's phone was located. White said the phone was later found but declined to say if it had turned up evidence.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol searched by helicopter with thermal imaging radar, and the Missouri State Water Patrol checked ponds in the area with sonar.

Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. James Keathley said he wishes the outcome was better.

"It's been quite an ordeal for the last few days. There's a lot emotions involved in this. It's been tough on everybody involved in this case," Keathley said.

David Schulte, who lives nearby, said Elizabeth typically would walk through his front yard about 30 or 40 feet away from the road on her way back home from the friend's house. Schulte said he didn't know Elizabeth well but that she had come through the neighborhood to sell cookie dough for a school fundraiser.
Schulte, who had helped with the search, said the area around where the phone was transmitting signals was about one-quarter of a mile away from the county highway and in the middle of the woods. He said it is easy to get turned around and difficult to hold straight search lines because the terrain is all "ridges and valleys" along with brambles.

"You'd have to want to be back there," said Schulte, before police announced that Elizabeth's body had been found.

Cole County Prosecutor Mark Richardson did not immediately return a call seeking comment Friday.

Funds for Girl's Family

ST. MARTINS - The family of Elizabeth Olten asked for any donations to go toward one of two funds.

One is the Elizabeth Olten Memorial Fund, and the other is the Anthony Olten Education Fund.

Anthony is Olten's older brother. Elizabeth was the youngest of five children.

Family members said they remember her as a wonderful, happy little girl.

"Our family was deeply saddened this afternoon to hear about her passing. We would like the community to know that we are grateful for all your thoughts and prayers," Elizabeth's sister-in-law Liza Adrian said.

Adrian said Elizabeth was a shy child who loved sleep-overs and cared for her family very much.

Missing on Oct 21 and by Oct 23 they already have 2 funds set up?     Why are we donating to the older brother's education fund?

I agree.  Weird.

Also, one of the articles posted above has a family member stating that Dale Olten (dad) is in prison for drug charges.  Why would they state that when he is in jail awaiting trial for slew of burglary and gun charges after a manhunt for him and his son last spring?
