Did they finish looking through the trash from all trucks who dumped trash from that area to look for those items? I mean the person could have dumped somer in one dumpster then threw her backpack and lunchbox in a regular tash can or another dumpster after the fact.

I guess there is not a lot more they could say about the perp. when they don't
know. I'm wondering why they just said that Somer had a twin brother and a 10
year old sister, how come no 13 year old 1/2 brother. Was her mother on the show?

Sheriff Hopeful National Exposure Leads to Somer's Killer
By Rich Jones, News Director @ November 6, 2009 7:02 AM Permalink | Comments (0)
The search for Somer Thompson's killer goes national this weekend.
Saturday night America's Most Wanted will tell Somer's story, widening the net for information that could lead Clay County cops to the person responsible for the first grader's kidnapping and murder last month.

America's Most Wanted Host John Walsh has speculated that a serial killer, suspected in a series of young girl's disappearances in Jacksonville decades ago, could be behind Somer's killing.

"That was just Mr. Walsh postulating on what may or may not have happened, but there is no indication of that at all", said Sheriff Rick Beseler.

Beseler hopes the TV exposure attracts the one tip investigators say they're waiting for to crack this case.

"No suspects and no POI".  They showed an artist rendition of the book bag that looks more like a tote, and the lunch box.

I posted to fast...and the book bag and the lunch box have NOT been found.

And all this time, I thought they called it a backpack.

Nope, it was a book bag, apparently. From the artist's rendition on AMW pages, I grabbed these:

Not at all as I envisioned.

The home at 1080 Gano Ave.in Orange Park, Fla. is only 500-600 yards from Grove Park Elementary where Somer was in the second grade.

There had been a fire at the house and workers were there remodeling it. The workers said Somer walked inside the fence around the home and even spoke to them.

But then, they say, she left. That was the last known siting of Somer alive.

The owners of the home, who no longer live there, gave permission for police to process the home as a crime scene using the FDLE crime lab. Cops hoped for a break, but nothing turned up.

No Suspects, Investigation Continues

A task force of officers from the Sheriff's Department, USMS, FDLE, FBI and additional specialists will continue to work on the case until it's solved.

Nearly 3,000 tips have come in to police and detectives immediately follow up on all workable leads.

All sex offenders living within a five-mile radius of the area where Somer disappeared, have been  questioned, but that doesn't mean cops have ruled them out.

"No one has been cleared of suspicion of this crime until we arrest a suspect," Sheriff Beseler said.

Police still do not have any suspects at this time, but tip lines remain open 24 hours a day.

Detectives know the cause of death in Somer's murder, but are not announcing it, for fear of compromising the investigation.

They have also identified the garbage truck that carried Somer's body to the landfill has been identified, and work to pinpoint where that trash came from.

A reward fund for information leading to the arrest of her killer has reached more than $45,000.

"I feel somewhat responsible for the people who live in my community -- and their safety. And when something like this happens, I take it very personal," Sheriff Beseler said.

"I feel responsible for catching this person and making sure that no one else in our community loses a child – no other parent has to go through what Diena Thompson is going through right now."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --  Turnout was high on Saturday for a fundraiser honoring 7-year-old murder victim Somer Thompson.

Somer was abducted while walking home from school last month. Her body was found in a Georgia landfill two days later.

The reward for information leading to the arrest of Somer's killer is currently $45,000.

Search On For Somer’s Tote Bag, Lunch Box

Sunday, November 08, 2009 8:52:07 AM

ORANGE PARK -- The Somer Thompson case made national headlines Saturday night as it aired on 'America’s Most Wanted.'

During the program, two sketches were shown. Clay County deputies believe the tote bag and round lunch box with a pink pig design belonged to the 7-year-old.

Witnesses say they think she may have had the items with her when she was last seen walking on Gano Avenue.

Investigators say neither items have been found.

So far, authorities have received nearly 3,000 tips in Somer's case, but no arrests have been made.

The Orange Park girl disappeared two weeks ago on her walk home from school.

She was found during an exhaustive search of a landfill 50 miles away, where trash from her neighborhood is taken over the Florida/Georgia border.

If you have any information on the case, call (877) 227-6911, or e-mail CART@claysheriff.com.

I caught the last few minutes of the story last night! Was it good? How long was it?

I wonder how long Somer is said to have been at the house talking with the men about the progress could it have been long enough for the crowd of people to wonder by? Could she have left and was by herself on the side walk?

The story says they didn't find evidence of anything at the Gano home, someone could have taken her somewhere else, especially since other men where there. The toolboxes on the work trucks are large enough to hold a little girl or simply tied her up and put her into the front of the truck on the floor board.

I wonder if they gave lie detectors to the men that were there that day just to rule them out.

Very true, TG!  Am also surprised that we haven't seen an arrest yet.  Seems it went from a flurry of action by LE, to nothing.  Wonder if something happened to call a halt to everything, that they don't seem to be talking about?

He indicated last night something like they had exhausted most of the 2000 leads.  I don't think they are calling a halt, I think they are stumped and trying to generate more information.  I would imagine they are reinterviewing some of SO.  They indicated that no one had been eliminated.

I am with you though, I want to see some action and an arrest very soon.

Thanks for that update, AZSunny!   Frustrating all around, am guessing.
