Neighborhood remains on edge following Somer Thompson murder
December 1, 6:46 PMCrime & Media ExaminerJason Taylor
The neighborhood where Somer Thompson vanished without a trace six weeks ago remains haunted by the unsolved murder of the little girl.

Neighbors say they feel chills walking their kids to and from school knowing that Thompson was snatched right from the street without anyone seeing a thing.

Parents are keeping an extra protective eye on their children as people wonder who is responsible for the terrible tragedy that took place in their close-knit neighborhood.

“Everybody eyes each other with suspicion now, wondering ‘Are you looking at me? Are you looking at my kids?’ ” Said 36-year-old mother of two, Keri Smith.

The 7-year-old Orange Park, Florida girl disappeared while walking home from school on Oct. 19. Her body was found in a Georgia landfill on Oct. 22.

So far the police have fielded over 4,000 tips, and the number grows each day. The sheriff's office has said they are waiting for evidence in the case to be processed at the crime lab.

Jaime Rathje, 30, mother of two, says she fears for the safety of her children who attend Grove Park Elementary school, the same school where Somer attended. “They have to be with me, in front of me,” said Rathje as she walked her kids home from school.
Local residents have noted a change in that most children no longer walk unescorted in the area.

The Sheriff's Office is working closely with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the U.S. Marshals, and the FBI to help bring Somer’s killer to justice.

There is a reward of $64,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for Somer’s disappearance and murder.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Sheriff’s Office at (877) 227-6911 or Crime Stoppers at (866) 845-8477 (845-TIPS) to remain anonymous or e-mail CART@claysheriff.com

Killer of Somer Thompson Still on the Loose December 01, 2009
Somer Thompson, age 7, was murdered on October 19. She lived in Orange Park, Florida. She had split from the group she was walking home with and was never seen by them again. She was last spotted alive near a house that was being remodeled.

$45,000 Reward

There is a $45,000 reward for information that leads to the capture of the killer of Somer Thompson. If you have any information about this crime please call the Clay County police at
Killer of Somer Thompson Still on the Loose
 877-227-6911.

Possible Items Kept by the Killer

The killer may have kept Somer's book bag and lunch box according to America's Most Wanted. These items were not found with her body. The book bag is pink with black straps. The lunch box is pink with a pig's face on the top of the box. If you have seen these items in anyone's home, please call the police or America's Most Wanted at: 1-800-Crime-TV.

Body Found in Landfill

Somer's body was found in a landfill in Georgia. According to America's Most Wanted, the garbage truck used to transport Somer's body to the landfill has been identified. Detectives are investigating where that truck originated.

Be Alert: Report Suspicious Behavior
Sheriff Rick Beseler told America's Most Wanted that people should report individuals who have changed their behavior. Let the police know if someone has: "Left the area unexpectedly, missed work, particularly on the day of the crime, has unexplained injuries on the day of the crime, unnatural interest in the crime investigation, increase in nervousness, shaving of hair or growing moustache or beard, no longer operating a work vehicle."

Police have indicated that there are about 90 known sex offenders living within a three-mile radius of Somer Thompson's home in Orange Park, Florida.

John Walsh, of America's Most Wanted TV show, told ABC there was a "sting of four child disappearances in the Jacksonville area about 20 years ago that have never been solved... I would hate to think this is a serial child killer... It's not that unusual for such a predator to come out of retirement."

I am still stymied that the murderer of this little girl has not been found yet! Same with Nevaeh...
Hopefully there will be an arrest soon in both of these cases..Meanwhile, I hope that parents are keeping a vigilant eye on their little ones! my kids/grand kids would never be out of my sight..What a way for children to have to live! but at least they will GET to live!

Neighborhood Watch Set Up in Somer's Neighborhood
Jackelyn Barnard  Taren Reed     Created: 12/3/2009 4:29:49 PM    Updated: 12/3/2009 6:14:51 PM
ORANGE PARK, Fla. -  In the midst of the reindeers and Christmas wreaths is the color purple, Somer Thompson's favorite.

"It's still unbelievable, but unfortunately life goes on so we've got to make it the best for the kids who are still here. I think the Christmas decorations will put some happiness into the situation," said Anna Braddy, one of Somer Thompson's neighbors.

It's been six weeks since Somer was abducted from her Orange Park neighborhood and murdered.

Braddy used to walk Somer to school every morning. She said the neighborhood has changed.

"It's changed for the better. I can say no kids are left out by themselves at all."

Even on a simple walk, neighbors keep an eye out for anything or anyone who does not belong in the area.

Clanzenetta Brown, another neighbor, said while Somer's memorial has gotten smaller, people continue to stop by. Brown also said the neighborhood is still on edge.

"I feel like it's the same level. It was a shock. I think people are still on their guard."

Brown is headed to the neighborhood watch meeting Thursday night. It is the first one and is another way the Grove Park neighborhood is watching out for one another now.

"I think people are much more interested in what's going on around them, who their neighbors are."

As time goes by neighbors try to move on, but the memories are still fresh in their minds.

Someone has left a permanent reminder at Somer's memorial.  The new plaque reads, "Forever in our hearts."

Family of Haleigh Cummings Wants FBI Involved

First Coast News

The grandmothers of Haleigh Cummings are saying they now want the FBI to take complete control of the investigation.

Haleigh was 5 when she vanished Feb. 10 from her father's mobile home, just outside the community of Satsuma.

Misty Croslin, Haleigh's father's ex-wife, was babysitting Haleigh that night when she said she awoke about 3 a.m. and noticed the kitchen light on. The back door was propped open with a brick and Haleigh was missing.

Haleigh's grandmothers Teresa Neves and Marie Griffis told First Coast News 10-months is too long to go without answers about Haleigh's disappearance.

Haleigh's paternal grandmother, Neves, said she wants Gov. Charlie Crist to involve the FBI.

Griffis, Haleigh's maternal grandmother, said a federal probe is needed because Haleigh was abducted from a jurisdiction that is extremely corrupt.

Both grandmothers have vowed not to stop fighting until Haleigh is found.

Thanks for the update on Haleigh OS.  That's interesting that they stand united on this AND are prepared to demand some accountability from the locals. Hope the FBI does take over. There's too many of our kids being lost.
Just checking in this thread and see there's no change, so sad.

Thanks for the nice welcome.

Yes, Brandi I am cranky. I'd have used a more catchy name for it if I knew it would eventually hold more than the Stacy Peterson case. Brandi, I admire your work so much!

Myst! For goodness sakes... I never knew that was you. I've been lurking for a while, thought I'd join and not post much... but you know me, lol.

Hi all.  I'm really surprised this case has not yet been solved.  I thought for sure this was going to be an easy one.  Perhaps it's true that they are just waiting to receive all of the forensics back.  I hope and pray that's the case.  There are far too many 2009 unsolved cases.  Far far far too many.
