Friday, April 16: Gone in broad daylight
Fresh from a break up, a young, beautiful woman is trying to start her life over in the tropical Norfolk Island off of Australia when she disappears in broad daylight. Dateline NBC's Sara James reports on the Agatha Christie-like mystery that ensues.

That is what they are showing in my area.

It must be a regional thing. I dunno.

Let us know how it is when you get a chance please, for those of us who aren't getting the opportunity to watch it.

Monkey friends...The story on Somer was on 20/20...I caught the last 30 minutes and cried the whole time....God Bless this family

it showed Somers brother and sister singing a tribute at a benefit for Somer...the two sang "You are my sunshine".  Deana demands  to know what this monster did to her baby...she wants all the details...no matter how hard they will be to hear,  thru tears she said she knew how she was bought in this world and wants to know exactly what she went thru when she left......so very sad to watch.  She said she will never have a normal life again. She also said God gave her a big mouth and she was going to use it by being an advocate for children.

The couple that turned in the computer said their children saw images on the computer that were so bad that they were in therapy...also said the LE said the images were so bad "NO" should ever have to look at something like that. Maybe if you go to the 20/20 website you can watch it online.

Mymonkey!

Thank you. I feel so stupid. It has really been one stressful week with the Haleigh case and Caylee cases and I don't know why I thought Dateline was carrying it! Oh man, how dumb do I feel!

Thanks, mymonkey. I will try to find it online to watch. And thank you for your summary.

Found the Somer Thompson 20/20 episode that was broadcast last night on the 20/20 website: http://abcnews.go.com/2020/

I also downloaded all the segments. I think it was very well done. I'll comment after I re-watch it. (I was stunned to hear that Harrell's mother, Annis, who told Jared that she is his alibi, had lived at 56 different addresses while Jared grew up. Not pertinent, but I found it astonishing.)

Grabbed these from the 20/20 episode:

This is the "white dog" that we have mentioned. It is a dog that Somer useed to stop by on her way home and see. The dog and the shed at the house Harrell was staying at both disappeared shortly after her death.

And here is a picture of Somer that I had not seen before:

I watched the 20/20 episode last night, it was so sad. My heart just broke for her mother. What I didn't get was the people who turned in the computer, why are they getting flack?

RIP Somer I am so sorry this happened to you.

I think that is just how the system works. They had to be investigated while LE determined if they had reason and means to set Jared up by planting the images on his computer.

Same reason a parent of a missing child is looked at first. And investigated thoroughly.

That's my take on it.

I don't think LE was giving them flack.  IIRC, it was after they went public with finding the computer after Harrell moved out.  People accused them of planting the CP.  The father held strong though, it had to have been tough for him.

I felt bad for the man that was being watched closely.  I don't really remember hearing much about him at the time.  He struck me just as creepy as he was nice.  Odd.

Oh.... another observation. Lots of homes for sale in the neighborhood, but not one sign in a yard for "Vinson" Realty.

I'm gonna open my mouth a bit now.  There is no "Vinson" Realty.  The realty has another name, the construction company has this name.  And neither one deserved the hit that FCN gave them by showing their name on TV.  Big loss there.

Neither did the RSO they plastered everywhere.

Nothing like picking up your stolen car at a crack hotel just a few miles away and a few hours of a little girl being snatched. Then coming home to cook dinner and listen to the news to hear the latest and having your kids say, "Mom, Mom!"  "Shhh, I wanna hear what they're saying"  "Mom---Look!  It's Uncle XXXX!"  Not one of our finer days.

Thank you to all that bothered to find out the RSO and contractor brothers were not a focus here or threat.  It helped my kids go to school with their chins up.  It was pretty brutal for a minute for them.  Especially my oldest, in high school, carrying the name.

Peace and trust to the Monkeys, you do ALL the kids well.

Microsoft Not Responsible For Somer Thompson Web Ad

Microsoft says it's not responsible for an Internet ad for its search engine, that showed an image of murdered 7-year-old, Somer Thompson.
The little girl was abducted and killed near her Orange park home last year, and her picture had been showing up on an advertisement for Microsoft's BING search engine. Microsoft says the ad was actually provided through Yahoo's advertising partner, and they are aware of the situation. So far Yahoo has not commented on the situation. Some web advertisers use randomly generated images to drive traffic to those ads. Those images are sometimes based on pictures associated with popular web searches. It's not clear if that was the case with this ad, or if the image was used purposefully.

Tree planted in Somer's memory
April 23, 2010
Stephen Kindland
Staff writer

ORANGE PARK – Near the playground where Somer Thompson used to slide down ladders and climb on monkey bars, a live oak tree has been planted to memorialize the child whose budding life was taken before it blossomed.

More than 40 people, including Somer’s still-grieving mother, Diena, took part in an Earth Day observance at Clarke House Park on Thursday, April 22 -- exactly seven months after Clay County Sheriff’s Office detectives discovered her 7-year-old body at a Georgia landfill.

Orange Park town officials presided at the dedication, where a marble stone bearing the slain child’s name and the title of her favorite song, “You Are My Sunshine,” was placed in front of a newly planted live oak tree that Town Manager John Bowles said would live for many years.

“A hundred and fifty years from now, this tree and Somer’s plaque will still be here and life will go on,” Bowles said. “It will honor Somer … and remind us of what we are here for today.”

Twenty-four-year-old Jarred Harrell has been charged with premeditated murder and sex-related offenses in the case that has shocked – and unified – members of a community that continues to support the Thompson family.

Harrell, who was arrested on multiple counts of possessing child pornography before being charged with murder on March 26, remains in an isolated cell at the Clay County Jail. He has entered a plea of not guilty.

Though the arrest has brought a sense of relief to hundreds – perhaps thousands – of people in the Clay County area, it has done little to console the Thompson family. What really has helped, according to Somer’s mother, has been the outpouring of support, including the 29th annual Earth Day ceremony staged by the town of Orange Park.

“I think it’s very sweet and wonderful,” Thompson said moments after Somer’s tree was planted. “I truly appreciate this town and everyone in it. This [park] was one of her favorite places.”

Vice Mayor Pete Morgan told a crowd that included members of the Orange Park Police Department and Clay County Sheriff’s Office detectives who served on Team Somer, the multi-agency investigative unit assigned to Somer’s case, that Thursday was “a very, very special day” for those whose lives have been affected by the tragedy.

“What happened to Somer deeply touched everybody in town,” Morgan said.

Somer’s grandmother, Debbie Bowling, said she also has appreciated the emotional and moral support offered through similar events and fund-raisers that have helped to establish the Somer Thompson Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that plans to raise awareness and help prevent child abductions and sex crimes.

Still, Bowling said after Thursday’s “heartbreaking” ceremony, dealing with her granddaughter’s death has been a slow, painful process that simply can’t be hurried.

“People tell us to move on,” she said. “But we just can’t – not yet.”

Information about the foundation -- which carries the message, “Justice for Somer is justice for children” -- can be found at www.SomerThompsonFoundation.com.
