Olten murder suspect pleads not guilty

COLE COUNTY, MO. -- The teenager charged with the murder of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten waived a formal arraignment and pled not guilty in her re-arraignment this morning.

Alyssa Bustamante, 15, was handed down charges by Cole County Circuit Court Judge Pat Joyce for first degree murder of Olten by strangulation and stabbing and armed criminal action in an earlier court appearance on Nov. 18.

By waiving the formal arraignment, the indictments were not formally handed down to Bustamante again. Her lawyer just entered the plea on her behalf.

Bustamante sat silently shackled in a green jumpsuit, often looking down, during the brief court appearance.

Supporters of Elizabeth Olten were in the courtroom wearing pink, while Bustamante's legal guardian, her grandmother, was not present in the courtroom.

Teen pleads not guilty to killing 9-year-old neighbor

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A 15-year-old Missouri girl pleaded not guilty Tuesday to killing a 9-year-old neighbor girl whom authorities say was slain because the teen wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone.

Alyssa Bustamante sat silently as an attorney entered a not guilty plea on her behalf to first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the Oct. 21 death of Elizabeth Olten. Bustamante often gazed down -- her long bangs covering her eyes, her hands and feet shackled -- during a Cole County court hearing that lasted less than a minute.

The judge scheduled a Feb. 16 hearing for an update on Bustamante's case.

That word that begins with an O and ends in R, was I believe the name of a monkey at one time and this person was banned and anytime you type that name it puts those ******'s instead of the word.

This was told to me a long time ago because I had the same question. Not sure I have the story exactly right, but it is something along the lines of someone who was banned. JMO JSM

could be...let's see if this one works......Dolce.....it that is exed out, then it must be banned monkeys names?

by the way Wyks...I finally got what the other word was and had thought of it too but thought....nahhh..can't be that...but JSM answered the probably reason why...

Just let it go, please.  Here is the explanation Klaas gave:

We used to have a member/moderator by the name of *******.  That person had a meltdown in the forum and was banned.

He threatened to cause trouble if his name is mentioned in the forum.  He really can't do anything but it was just easier to filter out his name.  I know it seems silly but please don't override the filter, TIA

Good to see you also. I've been around everyday, just don't have a lot to contribute, but I always check and read on 10 threads.

Quick Hearing for Bustamante (video also)

JEFFERSON CITY - The teenaged girl charged in the death of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten was arraigned in the Cole County Courthouse Tuesday morning.

Cameras were allowed in the courtroom for the first time where the arraignment took place for Alyssa Bustamante. The arraignment was originally delayed in November until she could get a defense attorney.

During the 10:30 am hearing, Bustamante pleaded not guilty. The hearing lasted two minutes. Even though Tuesday's court appearance was short, it isn't clear how long the entire case could take.

"Every case gets dealt with based on the facts of that case and what we believe the community wants done in the case. And so our strong considerations on that go first to the victim's family, second to what we think the community wants to be done in this type of case, and ultimately what we think the jury will do on the facts of the case," said Cole County Prosecutor Mark Richardson.

Bustamante is accused of killing Olten by strangling, stabbing and cutting the girl's throat in October. You can read the teenager's indictment by clicking on the link to the left of this article. You can also find all of the court documents on a web site started by the Cole County Prosecutor's office.

A status hearing for Bustamante is set for Febuary 16, 2010 at 9:00 a.m.
