A nurse from the University of Missouri Hospital who examined Bustamante while the teen was in jail last November testified that she had documented well over 300 scars from intentional cuts on Bustamante's arms, legs and torso. Among those still visible scars were a peace sign, two broken hearts and the word "hate," which Bustamante had carved into herself, said nurse Alyssa Neitzert.

Bustamante's body also showed signs of a self-inflicted burn mark, bite, and an attempt to pierce the skin underneath her lips, Neitzert said.

Sentence likely Wednesday for teenage Mo. killer
By DAVID A. LIEB
(February 7th, 2012 @ 5:30pm)

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri teenager who confessed to murdering a young neighbor girl is described as a "thrill killer" by prosecutors and a mentally disturbed child by her defense attorneys.

Those characterizations of 18-year-old Alyssa Bustamante (boo-stuh-MAHN'-tay) were made Tuesday as a judge considers whether to sentence her to life in prison for the October 2009 slaying of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten.

As prosecutor Mark Richardson was making his closing argument, Bustamante's grandmother stormed out of the courtroom crying. That prompted Bustamante to cry for the first time during the hearing.

Then as the judge was preparing to exit, Elizabeth's grandmother cried out from her wheelchair that Bustamante should not get out of jail until Elizabeth gets out of the grave.

The judge said she would hand down the sentence Wednesday.

Mo. teen described as thrill killer by prosecutors

The prosecutor urged the judge to impose the maximum for second-degree murder — life in prison with the possibility of parole — and an additional 71 years in prison for armed criminal action, which he said would have matched the remaining life expectancy of Elizabeth. Richardson also urged that the sentences be served consecutively, meaning that the 18-year-old Bustamante would be an elderly woman before she ever got a chance at parole.

Bustamante's attorney, Donald Catlett, countered that the sentences should run concurrently and that the judge should take into consideration a pre-sentencing report prepared by the state Division of Probation and Parole that apparently suggests something less than a life sentence. The judge said the recommendation must remain confidential.

Mo. Teen Killer Had Troubled Family, Depression
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. February 7, 2012 (AP)

A psychiatrist testifying for prosecutors says there is no way that an antidepressant drug could have made a Missouri teenager kill a 9-year-old neighbor girl.

This young woman may be mentally ill.  But she also knew right from wrong.  Lock her up and through away the key.  If she's ever allowed out, she'll kill again.  For the thrill and high she's tasted.

Oh, Sister, justice has finally come for dear Elizabeth.  At least it is more than the 18 years that Elisa Baker received for the second-degree murder of our angel Zahra.

Mo. teen gets life sentence, apologizes for murder
By DAVID A. LIEB, Associated Press – 41 minutes ago

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri teenager who had described the slaying of a young neighbor girl as an "ahmazing" thrill made an emotional apology Wednesday to the girl's family and was sentenced to a potential lifetime in prison.
 ::snipping2::
Bustamante originally had been charged with first-degree murder but pleaded guilty last month to the lesser charges to avoid a trial and the possibility of spending her life in an adult prison with no chance of release.

Cole County Prosecutor Mark Richardson said after Wednesday's sentencing that he agreed to the lesser charge because the judge had suppressed a statement given by Bustamante to authorities in which she described the slaying and stated she wanted "to know what it felt like" to kill someone.
 ::snipping2::
Under Missouri guidelines, Bustamante would have to serve 35 years and 5 months in prison before she is eligible for parole, said Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Cline. It's also possible that the more than two years Bustamante spent in jail while awaiting her sentencing could be counted toward that time.

After spending several weeks at a diagnostic prison, Bustamante could be placed in either one of Missouri's two female prisons or sent out of state. Cline said department officials also would evaluate whether Bustamante should be kept separate from other adult woman inmates.

Teenager who killed for fun sentenced
Posted: 09:21 AM ET

A teenager who says she killed her nine-year-old neighbor because she wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone has been sentenced to 60 years in prison.

Judge Patricia Joyce sentenced 18-year-old Alyssa Bustamante to life in prison for the murder of Elizabeth Olten, and 30 years on a charge of armed criminal action.

Despite the life sentence, Bustamante could be out of jail at age 78. In Missouri, a life sentence equates to a maximum of 30 years, and because the Missouri circuit judge ordered Bustamante to serve her sentences consecutively, she will serve a maximum of 60 years in prison with the possibility of parole.

Bustamante to serve at 35 to 60 years for Olten murder (FULL AUDIO)

According to the Dept. of Corrections Parole Board, she’ll have to serve a minimum of 85 percent of the life sentence — which is 30 years under Missouri statute — and 33 percent of the 30-year armed criminal action sentence. That works out to be 35 years, five months, and three days, says Corrections spokesman Chris Cline. She will be credited with time served in the Cole Co. jail, a little over two years.
