JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A judge ordered a 15-year-old girl to stand trial as an adult for the slaying of 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten, whose disappearance last month touched off a two-day search. Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem ruled Wednesday that the crime was serious and vicious. Beetem also said the state has no adequate facilities or services to treat Alkyssa Bustamante if she were to remain in the juvenile court system.

Immediately after the judge's ruling on Wednesday morning, Cole County sheriff's deputies arrested Bustamante on a first-degree murder charge. Within hours, prosecutors filed a grand jury indictment of first-degree murder. An indictment speeds the case through the court system by sending it directly to circuit court, skipping the need for a preliminary hearing in associate circuit court.

The indictment accuses Bustamante of killing Elizabeth by strangling her, cutting her throat and stabbing her on Oct. 21, the day that Elizabeth disappeared. Elizabeth had been visiting Bustamante's sister and disappeared on the short walk to her own home. Bustamante also is charged with armed criminal action because a knife was used in the attack.

Bustamante appeared briefly before a judge on Wednesday afternoon. She sat shackled with her hands at her waist, expressionless except for a hard swallow as the judge read the charges to her.

At the hearing on Wednesday morning, a police officer testified Bustamante confessed to killing Elizabeth because she wanted to know what it felt like to kill someone.

If convicted of first-degree murder, she faces a life prison sentence with no chance of parole. The law doesn't allow her to face a death penalty because of her age.

Bustamante is is custody with no bond.

Do read the comment by JCGIRL. She says the scuttlebutt is the other grave was for her little sister.  I remember when this first came out, someone commented that Elizabeth was a "trial run". Sorry but I would never be able to find that comment this late.

At first I thought she was going to lunge at the camera and by the end even the anchor looks to be glad she is done.  My opinion of KOMU has changed as they surely must be punking us.     Now I know why they don't want to use their technology for live streams.

I saw those and IMO I believe that is who the second grave was for as well.

I'm new here but have been reading for a while, and I just want to say thank God that the right thing was done today. Justice for this little girl will never be done here on earth, but judgement day will come and Alyssa will have to explain to God why it is that she hurt one of his most precious gifts. I have been praying about this case since it first hit the news, and although I hate what Alyssa has done, I do pray that she turns her heart to God someday, the most awful thing in all of this is that no punishment in the world can undo the hurt that was brought down upon elizabeth and her family, praying for you and those who have loved you little angel, may you be safe in the hands of Jesus

Mine as well.  I hope she was in the one grave.  The locals on some of the boards are saying Richardson has a horrible track record and it would be a good thing if the trial was moved to another jurisdiction.

I don't want to Stack - but My whole point of what I was saying is " Just what Northern/Fanny replied to "- The Media's Statement -Basically their words are Lumping Every Kid who wears Black acts Goth or Emo into AB's Personality - and that statement in the article is going to Trip out every parent that has a kid that attends that school ... UM Yep.

Deenie, this school board was the same one that only convened an emergency meeting on a Monday at 11am after the kids were already back in school, and only discussed having counselors for the elementary school. The high school was only discussed because the teacher had committed suicide, and didn't offer counselors for that or even admit AB (perp) went to the JCHS. As far as I know, they never have.

Personally, I would be very worried about my child if they were emo's or goth and had black suicidal thoughts, music, poetry, cutting and immersed themselves in it. I would, I would be very worried and would attempt to help them find more positive things in life. JMO

Miss Fanny is correct.  This district first released a statement that basically said - did not happen on school property, move along.  They then released a statement that counsellors would be available for the elementary students and listed the services on their site if parents felt that students needed help beyond what the district was providing for a few days.  They never released any condolences to the Olten family, nor mentioned that counselors would be available for the High School.  They did mention the Teacher passing, but never mentioned how the student population would be helped at the High School with his passing.  IMO they deserve every call by every parent to find out what they are doing to ensure the mental and emotional well being of the children that are with them each day for classes with these two emotional events taking place in one week.  The week this all went down with Elizabeth being murdered and the teacher committing suicide the top posting on the school website was the vollveyball team winning a game.  IIRC Bill Currie's death was article 5.
