2:06 p.m.: Ron Regan reports that there were 15 potential jurors in this group: Seven women and eight men. This time around Judge Ambrose went through his speech very quickly. He said that simply having a view on the death penalty does not preclude you from serving. It is more a matter if you can set aside your views and follow Ohio law. Very few potential jurors made eye-contact with Sowell. They pretty much ignored him. They did not show a lot of interest in Anthony Sowell. There were no members of the public present. No one who was in the morning session returned.

2:49 p.m.: The defense filed a third motion on Monday, "to quash subpoenas pursuant to Sixth, Eighth and Fourteen Amendments of the federal Constitution." The motion goes on to explain that the Prosecutor Bill Mason's office represents the probation department, which prepares records that the defense team wants to aide in their defense.

"The defendant is seeking impeaching information including a documented history of substance abuse and/or mental health problems and/or instance of not being truthful which impact on the witnesses' credibility," the motion stated.

Jury selection day 4

2:20 p.m.: Defense attorney Rufus Sims pulls his right hand up to his face. It looks like he is picking his teeth with a toothpick. Anthony Sowell's eyes keep opening and shutting, but they do not move. They are fixed on Judge Ambrose.

2:17 p.m.: Each time Ambrose runs through these instructions the main focus in on the death penalty and death penalty law. He also reminds the potential jurors that the state must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant is guilty. The defense does not have to prove anything at trial.

10:04 a.m.: There were only seven jurors in the morning group because the bailiff said three people did not show up. This group was mostly people 50 years old and up. In checking the court docket for case 530885 the state of Ohio vs. Anthony Sowell, there has been nothing new added since May 10.

Sowell jury to tour crime scene.
On Monday morning the jury in the Anthony Sowell murder trial will tour his Imperial Avenue home.

The jury in the Anthony Sowell trial tours the Imperial Avenue crime scene Monday.

Judge Dick Ambrose granted a motion to allow media access at the jury view. Sowell's attorneys objected to the decision, claiming it might "invite a mistrial."

Cleveland criminal defense attorney Marty Keenan says the visit could be an emotional one for the jury, but he doesn't believe panel member will be overcome. He admits being in a small house where 11 women were murdered will be difficult.

8:12 a.m.: After three weeks of jury selection, the trial of 51-year-old Anthony Sowell started on Monday with a jury tour of the crime scene. The 12 members of the jury, plus the four alternates, wore masks and gloves as the walked through Sowell's Imperial Avenue home on Cleveland's east side. Three members of the media were permitted inside the two-story residence and helped give further insight into the life of Sowell. Plain Dealer reporter Leila Atassi described the house as dirty and disheveled, with piles of clothing scattered about. NewsChannel5 photographer Bob Seeley commented on the smell of death lingering inside.

CLEVELAND— A woman who says she was beaten and raped inside Sowell's Imperial Avenue home gave heart-wrenching and graphic testimony in his murder trial Wednesday.

Gay says she dreaded testifying Wednesday but had to for the victims who did not survive.

"I'm their voice," she said.

Gays says she is in recovery and has been clean and sober for 16 months. She now tries to help other addicts and victims find their own voice and healing, and says she appreciates every day and every breath.

"Life is beautiful. I never want to take it for granted again," Gay told Fox 8 News, "because it's a blessing."

Tanja Doss, 44, told jurors Thursday that she and Sowell had been friends for about four years when he invited her to smoke crack at his house and watch the Cavaliers play the Lakers in April 2009.

But when the game ended, the night turned ugly. And without warning, Sowell began choking her so hard tears poured from her eyes. He told her to knock three times on the floor if she wanted to live, she said. And when she did, he released his grip. Then, he slapped her across the face and commanded, "Bitch! Take off your clothes!"

Each of the three women testified that Sowell used these exact words during his attack on them. And prosecutors believe the women’s stories could provide jurors insight into Sowell’s violent ways – and the last moments of the 11 dead victims’ lives.

None of the women denied her past transgressions or struggles with addiction. And prosecutors, in questioning family members of the dead victims, emphasized that those women, too, were addicts.

They, like the three alive to testify, were just the kind of women Sowell hunted, prosecutors contend -- transient, vulnerable, living fast and loose on the social fringe.

The trial resumes Tuesday.

Sequestered Sowell jurors must pay for own drinks

"Any juror so desiring may have alcoholic beverages during dinner each night," the Judge wrote in his court order, "provided that the total amount of such beverages consumed by any juror each night shall not exceed two cocktails, or two glasses of wine, or two bottles of beer."
Ambrose ordered that jurors must pay for any alcholic beverages themselves.
