Ohio jury recommends death for serial killer
August 10, 2011

(Reuters) - A Cleveland jury on Wednesday recommended that convicted serial killer Anthony Sowell be sentenced to death.

The jurors decided that "the aggravated circumstances outweighed the mitigating factors" on all 11 murder counts against Sowell. If he had been found guilty on just one count he would have been eligible for the death penalty.

Sowell, 51, was convicted by the same jury of killing 11 women, whose decomposing bodies were found around his home in 2009, when police attempted to arrest him for rape and assault.

Serial killer Anthony Sowell sentenced to death
August 12, 2011

(CBS/AP) CLEVELAND - Ohio serial killer Anthony Sowell has been sentenced to death after being convicted last month of murdering 11 women and dumping their remains around his Cleveland home.
Friday morning, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Dick Ambrose upheld a jury's recommendation earlier in the week that the 51-year-old Sowell be put to death.

The judge announced that Sowell deserved to die after a 45-minute analysis of Sowell's crimes and background factors in Sowell's favor.

Sowell survivor: Missing daughter has been found
October 24, 2011

CLEVELAND -- Anthony Sowell survivor/victim Vanessa Gay tells Channel 3 late Sunday afternoon that her missing daughter has been found.

Gay's daughter, Tionna Denae Miller, 14, was apparently found early Sunday morning and was taken to the Fourth District Police station.

No one called Gay and told her that.

At 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Cleveland police responded. In an email, police said:

"Today, thanks to tips from the community, at approximately 12:02 pm, Cleveland Division of Police Fourth District officers located Tionna Miller, age 14, who had been missing."
Gay called Channel 3 just before 5 p.m. to say that police had just then called her and told her that Tionna was there.

Earlier Sunday, Gay was called and asked by Channel 3 about reports that Tionna had been found and she said that no one had called her with that information.

Cleveland to demolish serial killer's home
December 5, 2011

(CNN) -- The city of Cleveland, Ohio, on Tuesday morning will demolish the house where serial killer Anthony Sowell hid the bodies of his victims, officials said.

A jury convicted him in July for kidnapping, abuse of corpses and the aggravated murder of 11 women around Cleveland from 2007 to 2009. In August, he was sentenced to death.

The convictions ended a saga that began in October 2009 with the discovery of the first two victims' remains in Sowell's home in Cleveland. He eventually was accused of killing at least 11 women ranging in age from 25 to 52.

Sowell's inconspicuous two-story home sat in a dilapidated Cleveland neighborhood known as Mount Pleasant. A stench hovered around the area, but no one initially realized it was the smell of decaying human flesh, instead assuming that it was a byproduct of a nearby sausage factory.

In a letter to the families of Sowell's victims, Blaine Griffin, executive director of the Cleveland Community Relations Board, said the demolition "is an important step in helping our community heal and move forward."

Ending the Silence
Bringing Rape and Sexual Assault out of Shame's Closet

By Ronni Mott
June 22, 2012

Anthony Sowell had been out of prison about three years after serving 15 for attempted rape when he ran into Gladys Wade outside a neighborhood store in Cleveland, Ohio, on Dec. 8, 2008. When she said she wouldn't go to his house to drink beer with him, Sowell became emphatic.

#He dragged Wade up his driveway, she told The Plain Dealer newspaper in November 2009, hitting, choking and pulling her.

#"He hit me so hard. He was dragging me by my shirt, and it was so tight around my neck," Wade said. "I was blacking out and woke up in an upstairs room. He just kept punching me in my face."

#Wade fought back. "I kept grabbing at his face and digging into his eyes and his nose," she said. Exhausted, she almost gave up. Then she saw a sliver of outside light through a door. She grabbed at Sowell's crotch and connected. He collapsed, and she crawled out the door.

#On the street, the people Wade cried out to ignored her. She ran into a restaurant for help, but the people there didn't want to get involved. Use the pay phone outside, they told her, refusing to call the police.
 ::snipping2::
A year after her attack, Wade found out who Sowell was: a serial rapist and murderer. She was lucky to be alive, one of a handful of women who had escaped him.

#Sexual assaults and rape by strangers, though, are a small fraction of all rapes in America—only around 5 percent. Most victims know their attackers.

#Sometimes, they're married to them.

Families of six Anthony Sowell victims reach $1 million settlement with Cleveland over detective's botched investigation
Updated 4:47 PM; Posted 8:02 AM
By Cory Shaffer, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The City of Cleveland has agreed to pay $1 million to the families of six women who fell victim to condemned serial-killer Anthony Sowell after a botched police investigation into a 2008 rape accusation allowed Sowell to walk out of jail with no charges.

The families of Nancy Cobbs, Telacia Fortson, Amelda Hunter, Le'Shanda Long, Diane Turner, and Janice Webb will divvy up the $1 million equally as part of an agreement to settle a lawsuit that was filed in 2010, dismissed by a county judge in 2014 and revived by an appeals court late last year.

The City of Cleveland, which will not admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement, also agreed to reimburse the families' lawyers for the cost of bringing the eight-year lawsuit.

The suit revolves a Dec. 8, 2008 report from Gladys Wade, who ran up to a Cleveland police car and told them that Sowell had just attacked and raped her. Patrol officers tracked down Sowell and arrested him as they investigated. They found footprints, broken glass and droplets of blood in the yard outside of his apartment, and photographed Wade's injuries.

The case was assigned to Georgia Hussein, who admitted in a sworn statement that she failed to review the evidence gathered by patrol officers before she took the case to assistant city prosecutor Lorraine Coyne. Hussein found Wade was not credible and told Coyne there was no evidence to corroborate her claims.

PLAIN DEALER NEWS ARCHIVE
Women might be alive if earlier charges against Anthony Sowell pursued
Posted December 5, 2009 at 5:00 AM
By Rachel Dissell, The Plain Dealer

In the nearly 11 months from the time Gladys Wade accused Anthony Sowell of attacking her and his arrest in late October, six women disappeared, were killed and their bodies found in and around Sowell's house.
Six of the 11 dead women found at Anthony Sowell's home might still be alive if authorities had more aggressively pursued cases in 2008 and this year after women accused him of attacks.

On Friday, the Cuyahoga County coroner's office identified the last victim, Diane Turner, who was the second body found in a third-floor bedroom on Oct. 29.

The coroner's office said the 38-year-old Cleveland woman had been missing since the last week of September -- just days after a 36-year-old woman told police Sowell had raped her and choked her with an extension cord.
Almost a year before that, on Dec. 8, 2008, police had arrested Sowell after Gladys Wade, who was bleeding, flagged down police officers near Sowell's home and told them he had dragged her up the driveway and attacked her.

Police arrested Sowell. But the case fizzled within two days because a city prosecutor decided there was not enough evidence to prosecute him. Sowell was released.

A city prosecutor said a sex crimes detective indicated Wade was not credible. The police have said it was the prosecutor who made that determination, not police.
