DELRAY BEACH — A Florida Missing Child Alert has been issued for Jade Beneby, a 17-year-old Delray Beach girl who is believed to have been abducted this morning as she walked to her school bus stop.

Jade left home around 6:30 a.m. today to walk to the bus stop a few blocks down from her house, at the corner of Southwest Eighth Avenue and Southwest First Street.

The Palm Beach County School District reports that the bus picked up students at the stop around 6:29 a.m.

At 7:05 a.m., Jade sent her mother a text message saying "mommy help me, I'm in trouble," Delray Beach spokeswoman Sgt. Nicole Guerriero said in a statement.

About a minute later, Jade sent a second message saying that she had done "all that she could do," and that she was now in the "trunk of a blue car," according to Jade's maternal grandmother, Ruth Willis.

Jade, a student at Atlantic High School senior, was last seen wearing a long-sleeved white shirt and long blue jeans, and carrying a pink bag, according to the statement. She stands about 5-foot, 6-inches tall, and weighs 105 pounds.

Fliers alerting the public to be on the lookout for Jade were being posted across town, her father Charles Beneby said at Delray Beach Police headquarters.

The girl lives with her mother, who called Charles Beneby and his wife, Tracey, about 7:36 a.m. today.

"She was crying and screaming," Tracey Beneby said of Jade's mother. The message Jade sent, Tracey Beneby reports, said "mommy help."

Police officials say mother and daughter had taken a rape aggression defense course with the department.

Charles Beneby said the family is "desperate" to get Jade back safely. He said he last spoke with his daughter, who runs track, over the weekend.

Anyone with information is asked to call Delray Beach Police Det. John Young at (561) 243-7800.

Guerriero held a news conference at 2 p.m. to say that investigators don’t believe it is a hoax and that they are treating like a kidnapping. She said Jade is a good student, a senior at Atlantic High, and has a good relationship with her mother. Investigators are focusing on talking to her friends to learn what she might have told them in recent days, Guerriero said.
““Her mom is very distraught, very upset,” she said.

Not many tips have come in from the public. “We had hoped for more,” Guerriero said.

Family and friends were gathered at the home of Jade’s mother, Sandra Willis, who is overwhelmed with grief, said one of Jade’s siblings, Denise Johnson of Palm Springs. Johnson said she did not believe Jade had run away, and did not think she had a boyfriend because her father did not want her to date until she got older.

“She’s funny. She’s very playful. She’s a sweetheart. She is a beautiful girl inside and out,” Johnson said, outside Willis’ house. “It’s like you are not safe to walk to the bus stop.”

Anyone with information on Jade or her whereabouts should contact Det. John Young at 561-243-7800. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement issued a statewide alert for the missing girl. Delray Beach police also have been in contact with the FBI.

Jade is described as 5-foot, 6-inches tall, weighing 105 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

I wonder if she tried calling and whispering to the police?  Maybe she was too afraid that they would hear her.
