At Least 8 Injured In Orlando High-Rise Shooting  Hat tip: Northern Rose
November 6, 2009
ORLANDO, Fla. -- At least eight people were shot inside a downtown Orlando high-rise Friday morning, according to WESH.

Firefighters were called to Gateway Center at 1000 Legion Place around 11:30 a.m. The building is near Lake Ivanhoe.

The Orlando station is reporting that all patients have been taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center. At least four of the eight patients are serious trauma cases.

Dispatchers with the Orlando Fire Department said a shooting with multiple victims was reported on the fourth floor.

At least six ambulances and dozens of police cars and fire engines have arrived at the scene.

Orlando Fire Department spokeswoman Vicky Robles said a shooter has not been taken into custody.

"We don't know who they are," Robles said.

WESH 2 News reporter Greg Fox said gurneys are being wheeled toward the building. However, some rescue personnel may be waiting for clearance from authorities that the scene has been secured.

Cameras in downtown Orlando showed authorities closing some streets around the center.

Gateway Center is a 16-story office building that was built in 1999.

Interstate 4 eastbound has been shut down while police converge on the area.

UPDATED: 1:29 pm EST November 6, 2009
ORLANDO, Fla. -- At least eight people were injured in a mass shooting inside a downtown Orlando high-rise just before noon Friday, according to the Orlando Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to Gateway Center at 1000 Legion Place around 11:30 a.m. The building is near Lake Ivanhoe. Many employees said they barricaded themselves inside their offices during the incident.

All patients have been taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center. At least four of the eight patients are serious trauma cases. The ORMC ER is closed to patients due to the shootings.

Former employee Jason Rodriguez, 40, has been identified by the Orlando Police Department as a suspect in the shooting. He is at large and possibly driving a silver 2002 Nissan SUV with Florida tag number D11 9UX.

According to Orlando Fire Department District Chief Michael Droege, an unknown number of people are still in the building and could be injured. He said the SWAT team is still trying to pull people out of the building.

WESH 2 reporter Gail Paschall-Brown, who is at the scene on the ground, said that 15 employees came out of the building very distraught. Paschall-Brown spoke with a witness who said that a former employee came into the office who hadn't worked at the company in over a year.

Orlando Fire Department spokeswoman Vicky Robles said a shooter has not been taken into custody.

Sgt. Barb Jones of the Orlando Police Department said she cannot confirm the status of any of the victims.

Orange County Sheriff's Spokesman Jim Solomons said his department is backing up Orlando police and they're still looking for an armed man wearing a light blue polo shirt and jeans, identified as Rodriguez.

Both directions of Interstate 4 have been shut down while police converge on the area. Nearby Edgewater High School and Lake Highland Prep are also locked down.

Rodriguez was an employee of Reynolds, Smith & Hill, a transportation consulting firm.

Police and Ken Jacobson, a spokesperson for the company in its Florida headquarters in Jacksonville, confirmed the shooting took place in the consulting firm's office. . "We understand the shootings did take place in our office," Jacobson said. "People were shot in our offices."

He said he had limited information but the company Chief Operating Officer David Robertson and Senior Vice President of Transportation Joe Debs left from the Jacksonville offices en route to Orlando early Friday afternoon.

Suspect in Orlando office shooting held without bond
November 7, 2009 11:54 a.m. EST

Jason Rodriguez, 40, was held without bond in an office shooting that killed one person and wounded five others.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

    * NEW: Jason Rodriguez, 40, ordered held without bond
    * Rodriguez is charged with first-degree murder in office shootings
    * Suspect "was recognized by numerous former co-workers," affidavit says
    * Rodriguez fired in 2007 for performance issues, company spokesman says

Orlando, Florida (CNN) -- The man accused of killing one person and wounding five others in a shooting at an Orlando office where he once worked made his first appearance in court Saturday, and was ordered held without bond.

Jason Rodriguez, 40, said little more than his name during the two-minute proceeding.

Judge Walter Komanski said the court found probable cause and factual basis for Rodriguez' arrest and said he would be held without bond on a first-degree murder charge.

Authorities said Rodriguez, a former employee of Reynolds Smith & Hills, entered the business' reception area in the 16-story Gateway Center building at 11:44 a.m. Friday and began shooting.

"He produced a handgun and started shooting in the reception area and continued shooting in the entire office area until he left," Lt. Louis Tanzi, violent crimes section commander for the Orlando Police Department, told reporters Friday.

According to the charging affidavit, the fatality occurred when Rodriguez entered the suite, pulled a handgun from a holster under his shirt and shot twice at an employee who was standing near the receptionist's desk.

He then entered a common work area "firing multiple rounds and causing injuries to several other employees," it says, citing a witness.

During the incident, Rodriguez "was recognized by numerous former co-workers," it says.

He fled the scene and later surrendered to authorities at his home.

"I'm just going through a tough time right now, I'm sorry," Rodriguez, who had recently declared bankruptcy, allegedly told police as he was taken into custody.

Shooting suspect had filed for bankruptcy

Asked by a reporter why he allegedly committed the crime, Rodriguez, escorted by police, said, "They left me to rot."

Paraded in front of reporters outside the police station, he said, "Innocent."

Tanzi said other employees of the architectural and engineering firm where the attack occurred have described Rodriguez as a "disgruntled former employee."

A company spokesman said Rodriguez had been let go from the company two years ago for "performance issues."

Ken Jacobson, the chief financial officer and chief legal counsel for Reynolds Smith & Hills, said Rodriguez was hired as an "engineer one," which he described as a "beginning engineer."

"His work performance was pretty deficient from the start," he said.

"We tried to work with his performance for 11 months and when he didn't improve, we let him go in June of 2007."

The company hadn't heard from him since -- until Friday's outburst, he said. "So we can't make any sense of this."

The affidavit describes apparently conflicting reasons for his departure. Rodriguez told a detective he had resigned from the company after five years there to get a better job, it says. But it adds, "Rodriguez stated that people at RS&H, the Orlando Office, harassed him and threw him out for no reason at all, making it look like incompetency."

He told police that, after a year and a half of unemployment, he found work at a Subway restaurant but was not given enough hours so he filed for unemployment, according to the affidavit. "Rodriguez felt the people at RS&H were hindering his efforts to obtain unemployment benefits," it says. "Rodriguez stated he was expecting an unemployment check but it did not come as expected. Rodriguez stated he felt he was forced into a situation where he could no longer provide for his family."

Tanzi said police recovered a firearm and had received "limited cooperation" from the suspect.

The five wounded victims are all in stable condition,
