Ship victims flown home after all

WILLEMSTAD — Contrary to what the authorities had announced earlier, the nine victims from the fire on board the cargo ship Aegean Wind, were flown home after all. It regarded three Greek and six Philippine crewmembers. They will now be buried in their own country.

After the Greek cargo ship had arrived at Curaçao at the beginning of the week to, amongst others, debark the nine mortal remains, a chartered aircraft had arrived last Thursday. The aircraft had flown back to Europe the same day to fly from Greece to Manila on the Philippine Islands.

There had been a huge explosion near the dining room followed by a fierce blaze on Christmas Day just west of Isla de Margarita on the ship owned by Atlantic Bulk Carriers. Nine crewmembers had died and five had been injured.

The ship was en route from the Brazilian seaport Salvador to Houston, Texas with a bulk cargo of steel.

WILLEMSTAD/THE HAGUE — Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin (Justice) states that five co-workers of the Royal Military Police at Schiphol have been fired due to their involvement with drug smuggling since 1999. For that matter, there is no specific registration of drug smuggling cases involving governmental personnel.

Also on behalf of the Minister of Defense, Maxime Verhagen and State Secretary Ank Bijleveld-Schouten (Kingdom Relations), the Minister answered questions from Leerdam and Heerts on involvement of a co-worker from the MP at Schiphol regarding cocaine smuggling from St. Maarten in October and November last year. Two drug routes had been rolled up between the Netherlands and the Antilles at the time. According to Hirsch Ballin, “there is a question of unrelated incidents”.

The Chamber-members ask whether the Minister is prepared to take actions to guarantee a more strict supervision. Hirsch Ballin states that the number of incidents is considered too meager, but that these have nevertheless lead to re-consideration of procedures and measures already implemented. “Monitoring the procedures is a continual process.”

Hirsch Ballin did not wish to elaborate on the question how many drugs had been smuggled from the Netherlands Antilles with the help of the MP co-workers at Schiphol in question. “No comments can be made on this matter as the criminal investigation has not been finalized yet and the case has not been handled by the judge yet.”

Dutch again summon Venezuela ambassador on comments

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen on Friday denied fresh accusations by the Venezuelan government that the Netherlands is supporting U.S. spy flights over Venezuelan territory.

Verhagen condemned the comments as "inaccurate, unjust and really out of place" in a statement on Friday and said he would summon Venezuela's ambassador again to explain the remarks.

Twice in the past two weeks, the government of President Hugo Chavez has publicly claimed that the Dutch have let the U.S. military launch spy flights from bases on the territories of Aruba and Curacao under the guise of drug surveillance missions.

On December 17 Chavez said the Netherlands was planning "aggression" against Venezuela in concert with the United States, and on Thursday his government again charged the Dutch with "complicity" in such plans.

Verhagen said the Netherlands had made clear to the Venezuelan government that the civilian airports in the Dutch islands have been made available to the United States solely for unarmed drug surveillance missions.

The United States has for years had a military presence on Curacao and Aruba, with about 250 Air Force crew and ground staff involved in counter-narcotics and surveillance operations over the Caribbean region.

In its statement on Thursday, the Venezuelan government questioned whether that was their true purpose.

"The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela doubts the installations that the Netherlands government has put at the disposition of U.S. military contingents are used in the fight against drugs," it said.

The Foreign Ministry, which summoned the Venezuelan ambassador last month, said on Friday it wanted to see the ambassador again "quickly" to clarify the new comments.

The alleged threat of U.S. intervention in the oil-producing South American nation has become a central element of Chavez's discourse and a rallying cry for his supporters.
