Wife Says Suspect Kept 3-Year-Old Daughter's Body in Freezer

Last Modified: Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 2:58 p.m.
WINTER HAVEN  The body of a 3-year-old girl was kept in a freezer for months after she died, the wife of the suspect told detectives, according to an arrest affidavit released today.

Investigators think they found the remains of Masarah Ross and her mother, Ronkeya Holmes, 29, on Wednesday in an orange grove east of Winter Haven. They had been reported missing more than a year ago.

Lester Ross, the girl's father, is in the Polk County Jail on a witness-tampering charge and has not been formally accused by police of killing the girl.

That witness is Sharon Ross, who told police her husband wrapped a cord around her neck and threatened to kill her if she ever told investigators what she knew about the death of the child, and Holmes, with whom Ross had a brief relationship.

According to the arrest affidavit filed by Florida Department of Law Enforcement Special Agent Scott Gibson, this is what Sharon Ross knew:

* In late May 2009, Sharon Ross arrived home to find Masarah dead. Sharon Ross told detectives she believed Ross kept Masarah in a deep freezer for months. He said the girl's death was an accident.

* On Oct. 20, 2009, Sharon Ross watched her husband struggle to load “two items” wrapped in sheets into the trunk of her rental car.

* She said Lester Ross drove to an orange grove off Dundee Road, and said he left with the two items but came back emptyhanded. a team of investigators say they dug up found a large and a small skeleton from a single shallow grave.

* Sharon Ross told investigators that she believed Ross killed Holmes to cover up the disappearance of Masarah.
