There's a reason Nancy Grace's 'exclusive' sounded familiar

    * By Mark Woods
    * Story updated at 7:04 PM on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010
I’m glad we don’t often use the word “exclusive” to describe a story or interview.

Even though I suppose many stories and interviews done by reporters at this and other local papers could be described as such, doing so often seems like sensational, look-at-me journalism.

Besides, after catching some of Nancy Grace on television last week, I’m a little confused about the definition of “exclusive.”

For a couple of days, in logos and screen crawls, in blogs and headlines, the HLN show used the e-word over and over.

Breaking News Exclusive!

Haleigh’s Dad’s Exclusive Jailhouse Interview!

Exclusive interview: Ronald Cummings explodes behind bars!

Much of Grace’s show last week was built around audio of an interview, done in the Flagler County jail, by Times-Union reporter Dana Treen. Or, as we now call him in the newsroom, “inaudible.”

Let me explain.

Dana has spent much of the last year trying to keep up with the saga of Haleigh Cummings and her family. I don’t envy him. It was hard enough to cover the tragic beginning. But since then, I imagine it has been kind of like covering one very long episode of Jerry Springer.

That’s my description, not Dana’s. He has covered this professionally. He has spent long hours working on story after story. And every time it seems like he might be able to get away from it, some new twist pulls him back.

So last Sunday, after Haleigh’s father and former stepmother were arrested on charges of trafficking in prescription drugs, Treen spoke with Cummings by phone.
The conversation was recorded and made a public record.

We ran a story about what Cummings said on Jacksonville.com and in the paper Monday. We never used the e-word.

But when the audio became public, Grace filled hours of her prime-time cable show with it, inevitably labeling it an exclusive. If you didn’t know better, you would have thought it was the show’s exclusive, that Grace’s people did the interview and had the only record of it.

And she and her staff made sure viewers didn’t know better, never mentioning the Times-Union, Dana Treen or -- minor detail -- that others had the audio.

Beyond that, when the show played conversation that included Cummings calling the reporter by name, the transcript on the screen included every word except one. The name.

“[Inaudible],” it said.

Maybe I should cut Grace some slack. It was a long week. She had to appear in court for a deposition in a wrongful death suit filed against her and CNN. Her lawyers fought against having it videotaped, basically saying they feared someone might get ahold of the clips and use them in ways they couldn’t control.

Imagine that.

A sense of irony never has been one of Grace’s strengths. She once co-wrote a book saying, among other things, the “24/7 media” was hurting our justice system, which is kind of like Mark McGwire writing a book saying “bulked-up ’roid heads”  tainted our baseball records.

By the end of the week, Grace was losing her voice. But fear not. Even if she is unable able to talk, I’m sure she and her staff will come up with something to air. Perhaps a Nancy Grace “exclusive flashback.”

The [Inaudable]/Nixon interviews!

Thanks for posting that Trim.

Good read.

Ms Nasty and AH did TJ an injustice as well, imho!

Hello Monkeys, I just wanted to say that after listening to NG the past few nights and hearing Ronalds jail house interview, are we still suppose to believe that Ronald really wants this case  solved and his daughters where-a-bouts known?

I mean , come on, he has done nothing but continuously said over and over again in that phone call that he will kill the person that is responsible for what happened to Haleigh, what is he trying to do with those statements,  doesnt he think that if someone was gonna say something that hearing him talk like that would scare them and make them to afraid to talk...

I  think he is trying to scare Misty into NOT saying anything with that statement...I mean come on....listen to him.....why give a interview all of sudden and yell that crap out again and again,.....I think it was the only way he had to get a warning to Misty in jail, Im sure she either gets to see the news or a family member would tell her all about what he said when she gets visitation or phone calls,

Something isnt right with him wanting to talk now when he wouldnt before, he had a reason to do what he did and I think it was to get the message back to the only one that could tell!!!

You must be confused, HH, Misty is the ring leader, they all bow down to her, silly monkey!

We need an updated picture of your son's baby, Jake.

Oh, your right....silly me.....what was I thinking, ....and I will post a recent pecture of Jake over in musings in just a moment for you...lol......Oh, and I got a tatoo tody, wanna see that too..

Haleigh Cummings Update – Drugs, Drugs, And More Drugs

Posted on January 30th, 2010
by Simon Barrett in crime

It was with a huge amount of humor that I read the latest Art Harris EXCLUSIVE , the title screams EXCLUSIVE: “Misty No Drug Dealer!” —Dad

This tabloid headline sounds great, you could put this one on the front page of the supermarket tabloids and make a killing. Obviously Misty Croslin does have some supporters, and we should not be surprised that her dad is one of them. Unfortunately dad, Hank Croslin Sr. is hardly in the position to pass judgment or comment over his daughter.

As TJ Hart reported for WSKY 97.3 Hank Croslin Sr. is himself accused of doctor shopping, (read article) and the drugs involved were Oxycodone and Hydrocodone. Hmm, that sounds a lot like the same drugs that his daughter Misty Croslin is accused of selling!

Is this an example of the family that stays together, gets high together?

Hank Croslin Sr. goes on to say in Art Harris’s article:

“If she bought some pills, she was just doing people favors,”Hank Croslin explained. “If you know Palatka, this ain’t nothing but a cesspool of drugs and pills. But Misty’s no drug dealer!”

One wonders if Art Harris is still a hired gun? I find it hard to beleive that this is the case, but the revelations that came out in the Kim Picazio bar complaint rebuttal give you pause for thought. Is he now a ‘Media Consultant’ for Misty and Hank?

Hank saying that Misty is not a dealer sounds like rubbish to me. The police reports make it very evident that they spent at least a month of watching and talking to the young woman prior to taking any action.

This is a letter that was sent to Marie Griffis from Teresa Neves regarding the 1 year Vigils for HaLeigh.

————
Dearest Marie,

I’m sorry I have to write but I have made call after call to Crystal who does not answer and does not return my calls and I have no way to get in touch with you. I wanted to write because I have been told that you are trying to plan a vigil in Putnam County on the same night that we have planned a vigil for HaLeigh. Initially, we spoke with Crystal , told her all about the vigil, and she agreed to come and stand with Ronald. Crystal later stated that you and the rest of your family would also attend. We told her we would hold the vigil at 202 Green Lane , and we received permission to hold the vigil there. I do not know when your family changed their minds but because it seems you have I would like you to know that we would like the information for the vigil you plan to hold and we will attend there. It was Ronald’s desire, (since the vigil on the ten month anniversary vigil) that we are all together for this day that marks one year since HaLeigh’s disappearance. We share Ronald’s desire and feel like everyone should be in one place together, united, to pray for HaLeigh. Also we have approximately 200 candles and we will be happy to provide these candles. Again, we would like to have the information for your vigil so that we might attend for HaLeigh. Thank you. God bless!

Teresa Neves

this article is long so in two parts, part one was the news article, part two the update of LE report
i had this bookedmarked, and it was updated, when i went back to it today
PART ONE

http://jacksonville.com/news/metro/crime/2009-08-06/story/ronald_cummings_arrested_for_burglary_battery
Ronald Cummings arrested for burglary, battery
Father of missing Haleigh Cummings released on bail
By Dana Treen, Amanda Winkle Story updated at 11:23 AM on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010

Ronald Cummings, the father of missing Satsuma 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings, was booked into the
Putnam County jail at 1 a.m. on a felony charge of burglary with battery.

Cummings is charged with fighting with a brother-in-law late Wednesday.

He was released on $12,004 bail at 1:11 p.m.,according to the Putnam County jail's booking desk.
Cummings bail was set at a first appearance this morning.

He was arrested about midnight.

Reports from the Putnam County Sheriff's Office and Cummings' family say the arrest came following
a fight between Cummings and his wife's brother at her house.

According to both sources, Misty Cummings' father, mother and brother Hank Croslin Jr. came to the
mobile home of Annette Sykes, who is Ronald Cummings' grandmother, about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Sykes said the Croslins were trying to get Misty Cummings into their van to come with them but she
refused. Sykes said Croslin hit Cummings and started a fight.

The Croslins could not be reached this morning but told deputies after the fight that Misty Cummings
had called them and said she wanted to leave Ronald, according to a police report by Deputy Nicole
Quintiere of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

The Croslins went to Sykes' home, where Ronald Cummings started the fight, according to an interview
with Hank Croslin Jr. in the report.

During the fight, Croslin went into the van and Cummings swung at him in the vehicle, according to
Sykes and the Croslin's account to Quintiere.

Croslin and his parents left and deputies arrived at Sykes' later in the night and made the arrest
after interviewing the Croslins. Hank Croslin Jr. was taken to Putnam Community Medical Center
complaining of head and neck injuries.

In a statement to investigators, Ronald Cummings said his in-laws came to his grandmother's residence
after being told not to by his wife. Cummings requested charges against Hank Croslin Jr. and
Hank Croslin Sr. Those affidavits will be sent to the State Attorney's Office for review, according
to the report.

This morning, Sgt. Stacey Dowling of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said Cummings was charged
with burglary because he went into the vehicle without permission.

Cummings' daughter has been the focus of a missing child investigation since she disappeared from
his residence in Satsuma Feb. 10. Investigators have nearly 5,000 leads they continue to follow in the case.

No arrests have been made in that case.

PART TWO LE report

http://jacksonville.com/news/metro/crime/2009-08-06/story/ronald_cummings_arrested_for_burglary_battery

Ronald Cummings arrested for burglary, battery
Father of missing Haleigh Cummings released on bail
By Dana Treen, Amanda Winkle Story updated at 11:23 AM on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010

Following is the report by Deputy Nicole Quintiere:

On August 5th, 2009 I was dispatched to the parking lot of the Welaka Kangaroo in reference to the
report of a battery. When I arrived on scene, I met with Hank Croslin Jr and Hank Croslin Sr and
also Lisa Croslin. Upon initial assessment of the situation I gathered that Hank Croslin Jr had
been battered by Ronald Cummings.

Upon further investigation into the incident, I spoke with Hank Croslin Jr on his own. Hank stated
that he, Lisa and Hank Sr had gotten a phone call from Misty who was crying and yelling.  He said
that Misty asked for them to come to her residence and pick her up because she no longer wanted to
be at the residence with Ronald. In an attempt to obtain his sister, he, Lisa and Hank Sr drove to
her residence on 4th Avenue. He stated that when he arrived at the residence on 4th Avenue Ronald
came out and was acting crazy. He said that Ronald came out and began "swinging on him". He said
that he was hit in the head and neck several times.  He said that after they got in their physical
altercation, he entered his vehicle in an attempt to drive away and Ronald entered the vehicle on
the passenger side and began striking him again.  He said that at that time, he drove away and went
to the Kangaroo in Welaka to call 911.  Hank Jr completed a written statement in reference to the
incident. He also signed a charging affidavit against Ronald Cummings for Burglary with Battery.
Hank Jr was transported to Putnam Community Medical Center complaining of injury to his neck and head.

After speaking with Hank Jr, I spoke with Lisa Croslin. Lisa stated that she was not sure what Ronald
was on but he was not in the right state of mind. She said that up until now she never knew him as
being violent. She said that they had received a phone call from her daughter Misty screaming and
crying. She said that she was worried about her daughter and went to the residence to check on her.
She said that when they arrived on scene Ronald went crazy. She said that when they were in the
driveway of the residence Ronald came to the vehicle and hit her son. Lisa completed a written sworn
statement in reference to the incident.

It should be noted that Hank Sr was at the scene as well. He stated that he did not wish to complete
a written or recorded statement. He said that he did not want his daughter to be mad at him so he
did not want to take any action. He did state though that he was at the residence when the fight
occurred. He said that Ronald went crazy on his son.  He said that they arrived and Ronald came out
irate. He said that Ronald hit his son several times and then was forced back into the residence.
He stated that after a few more minutes Ronald came back out and initiated another fight. He said
that they got into three separate physical altercations before leaving the residence to call 911.
No written or recorded statement was provided. He stated that he would be willing to speak in court
if a subpoena was issued for him.

After speaking with all three of those subjects, I located Ronald Cummings at 216 4th Avenue.
Upon initial contact, I detained Ronald Cummings for my safety and the safety of all others at the
scene. It should be noted that Ronald Cummings is usually in possession of some sort of hand gun and
it was mentioned that he may have been in possession of it at the current time.  Ronald was taken
outside of the residence by me and Deputy Nelson. Sgt Cecil Manning stayed in the residence with
Misty Croslin and Ronald's grandmother Annette Sykes. Ronald was asked to explain what happened
with Hank Croslin Jr. He stated to me that he did not wish to speak that it was his right to remain silent.
At that time, I asked Deputy Nelson to stay with Ronald while I spoke with Misty and Annette.

Upon speaking with Misty she stated that she had talked to her brother on the telephone. She said
that she asked him why he had been calling her residence all day. She said that he asked her if he
could come over and she said no because it was too late. She said that he then made a big ordeal
about not being able to see her and said he was coming over anyway. She said that when he arrived
at the residence, he began a verbal altercation with Ronald. She then said that Hank Jr came at Ronald
and a physical altercation began. She said that Ronald went into the residence as instructed by his
grandmother. When Hank did not leave the residence Ronald came back out and another physical
altercation began. Misty said that she was trying to break up the fight and got hit in the face two
times by Hank Jr and her dad Hank Sr because she was in the middle of the fight. She said that
they fought for a little while longer and then her brother and mom and dad left. Misty completed a
sworn written statement in reference to the incident.

After speaking with Misty I spoke with Ronald's grandmother Annette Sykes. Annette stated that she
was in bed and heard a racket outside of her house. She said she got up and opened the door. She
said she saw a group of people outside in her front yard. She said she saw three men in a crowd
screaming and yelling. She realized that the men were Ronald Cummings, Hank Croslin Jr and
Hank Croslin Sr. She said that they were fighting and Misty and her mother were trying to get
them to stop.  Misty told them to leave the residence. She said that she attempted to break up
the fight and told Ronald to go into the residence and everyone else to leave. She said that she
separated Ronald and Hank Jr and sent Ronald in the house. She said she pushed Hank Jr, Sr and Lisa
into their van and told them to leave. She said that Hank Jr continued to yell at Ronald. She said
that Ronald came back out and they went to fighting again.  She said that Hank Jr was in the van
and Ronald reached in again after him to continue the altercation.  She said that again she sent
Ronald into the residence and slammed the van door shut so that Hank, Hank and Lisa would leave.
She said that Hank Jr was going to the handy way to call the sheriffs office. Annette completed a
sworn written statement in reference to the incident.

It should be noted that Ronald Cummings made it very clear at the scene that he had a right to remain
silent and did not wish to speak about the incident without a lawyer. Ronald was placed in the rear
seating area of my patrol vehicle. He was advised that he was being charged with Burglary with battery.
Ronald was transported to the jail without incident.  When we arrived at the jail he advised that
he wished to "fill out a statement just like everyone else did against him". He stated also that he
wanted to sign charging affidavits in reference to battery against Hank Croslin Jr and Hank Croslin Sr.

In Ronald's statement he stated that three people Hank Croslin Jr, Sr and Lisa Croslin showed up at
his grandma's house after they were told not to come there by his wife Misty Cummings.  He said that
Hank Jr and Sr got out of the van and approached in an "aggressive" manner.  He said that he asked
Hank Jr to get out of his face and he then came closer. He thought he was going to hit him so he pushed
him out of the way. He said that Hank Jr then hit him after Ronald pushed him and the physical
altercation began. He said that Hank Sr then entered the fight and held him while Hank Jr hit him.
Ronald completed a sworn written statement in reference to the incident and also signed charging
affidavits against Hank Croslin Jr and Sr for battery.

Ronald was booked without incident on the charge of Burglary with Battery. His bond is set at $12,504.00.
Photographs were taken of Ronald Cummings and Hank Croslin Jr's injuries. The photographs have been
uploaded onto the PCSO website for further review. At this time, the charging affidavits against
Hank Croslin Jr and Sr will be forwarded to the State Attorney's Office for further review. Any
further reports or supplements will be completed and submitted in a timely manner.

http://eyesforlies.blogspot.com/2010/01/ronald-cummings-jailhouse-interview.html

What Ronald Cummings says in this jailhouse interview is quite revealing.

Interviewer: Have they asked you about Haleigh yet...What happened?

RC: ...They just told me that their main focus is not on putting me in jail, its about finding Haleigh.
Why would the police say that, if they didn't think Cummings knew something? Does this make any sense? It reveals to us that the police clearly believe Cummings knows more than he is telling us.

If Cummings was being looked at unfairly, you would have expected him to say something like, "Look man, they have the wrong person. The person who took my child is still out there, other children are at risk. I worry about my son!!"

Have you ever noticed he never has worried his son? That's another huge red flag--two in one sentence.

Cummings goes on to say, "The 911 call, I haven't changed my mind about the 911 call since the minute it was made."

What?

What would he change his mind about in the 911 call? The fact that Ronald thinks there is something he could have changed his mind about the 911 call is a concern for me. I wish the reporter would have delved into this more to see what Ronald would have said. I suspect he may have been talking about his threat to kill the abductor (because that is what this segues into, but one can never be sure).

He then babbles on that if he finds out who did it, he'll go after them. It's ridiculous babble, if you want my opinion. He says, "That still remains that it don't matter 40-50 years from now, if I found out whoever done it before they do, you know whatever, might be done whether they took Haleigh because they took because they lost a child, or whatever the case might be, you know, uhm...yeah...."

The word "yeah" here is indicative that Ronald is thinking as he is talking and he is confirming things to himself as if, "Yeah, that's right. That's what I want to say." It's uncommon for people to do this. When people are deceptive, some have a habit of verbal confirming to themselves that they are saying what they wanted to say. It's like there is a cognitive overload, and their thoughts of self-censoring slip out unconsciously. I've seen it multiple times.

In his ramblings, Cummings talks about how someone "stole" his child. Later on, however, he talks about how if Haleigh is found it will be because someone is reporting a "homicide". He says:

"They know I won't be the first ones to know. I wouldn't call'em or nothing else. They would probably be notified by the news media or...or somebody, you know...report'en a homicide, so that's how they'll know I haven't found anything."
Ronald is all over in what he believes. One minute he suggests someone may have stolen his daughter to replace their missing child. The next, he talks someone took his daughter and if she is found ,it will be cause it is a homicide. The two are contradictory. He seems to change his position as the wind blows... Then when the interviewer questions if Cummings is talking about him committing a homicide against the abductor, Cummings owns that, too, but that is clearly not what he was saying.

There is little sense to what Cummings says. When people have genuine feelings, their beliefs are consistent one way or another, or they don't own anything, if they are ambiguous. They don't blow in the wind like Cummings is here. Deceptive people often do this...

Interviewer: ...Do you think she (Misty) know more?

RC: That's a hard question to answer....It's hard to believe that she don't know more, but...It's also hard to believe that if she did know more, she didn't already talk, you know...especially if they got her locked up like they got me locked up...
Notice the pauses? They are suggestive that he is thinking as he speaks (hot spot for deception), rather than talking from his heart.

Cummings behavior towards Croslin is just crazy. If he truly was not involved and didn't know anything, he would be demanding the truth from Croslin. But he never has. Instead, he insanely defends her which makes no sense whatsoever, unless they are both in on this. His reply above is just more senseless ramble, if you want my opinion.

And the idea that Crolin will talk in prison could still happen, but Cummings may have scared her that if she does, she could face the death penalty. That would be enough for Cummings to be confident that Croslin will never talk. Life in prison or the death penalty? I think the choice would be easy for most people: Keep your mouth shut.

Cummings says interestingly, "I want my girlfriend to know I love her." Did Ron get a new girlfriend or is that a message for Misty (that he is still loyal to her so she stays loyal to him)???

This is plain creepy!
