AUSTIN (KXAN) - Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has arrested a teacher who they said was caught with thousands of images of child porn.

Stephen Wayne Sudduth, 34, has been charged with 30 counts of possession of child pornography, and 10 counts of promotion of child pornography.

Investigators said Sudduth was found with 57,000 images and 1,000 videos containing child pornography.

"An elementary school educator possessing thousands of sexually explicit images and video of children frightens parents around the state," said Abbott.

Sudduth used to work in the Katy school district. He was hired on and was about to start working at the Hays Consolidated Independent School District.

"There was nothing in Mr. Sudduth's criminal record in June, when we hired him, that would bar his employment with Hays CISD," Hays CISD spokesperson Julie Jerome said Thursday. "He abruptly resigned less than a month later and was never in a classroom in our district."

Officials with the Katy schools, just outside Houston, confirmed that Sudduth was employed as a teacher at Nottingham Country Elementary School from 2000-2006.

"After undergoing background and reference checks required of all new employees, he taught 5th grade from 2000-2003 and kindergarten from 2003 to 2006," read a prepared statement distributed by the district on Thursday."At the time of his resignation, there was nothing in his teaching record or experience here that gave evidence of this type [of] behavior."

Officials say he resigned in April, 2006 to teach overseas in an international school.

In July, 2009, Katy ISD was notified by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) that the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) had been informed of a recent criminal history and secured the district’s cooperation in its investigation regarding Sudduth’s teacher certification.

It is unclear at this time if any of Sudduth’s students were victimized as part of his child porn possession. The Attorney General's Office encourages any parents who have questions about Sudduth to call (800) 252-8011.

Sudduth remained in the Austin County Jail Thursday morning on a $500,000 bond.

"It's the most depraved, horrendous kind of crime you can possibly imagine," said Abbott.

This move comes the same week the Texas Department of Public Safety announced plans to speed up the time it takes to forensically analyze computers suspected of containing child pornography. DPS currently has a backlog of 45 cases, most of which deal with child pornography. Each takes an average of about 10 months to complete, according to a DPS spokesperson.

“The current backlog of cases is unacceptable, especially if the case involves child pornography," said DPS Director Steven C. McCraw.

Two years ago, DPS had only one examiner working in this department. As a result of recent legislative funding, that number has now gone up to four, with another examiner in training.

DPS also plans to install additional workstations for the computer analysis and streamline the forensic process. Officials said, partly as a result of that investigation, examiners will begin using a new system to keep record of the backlog. As the rate of child pornography cases grows in Texas, this new system should help track that number.

Both DPS and the Texas Attorney General’s Office, in addition to many private labs across the state, fill the void for smaller police agencies without their own labs to analyze child pornography cases. Under Texas law, possession of child pornography is a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in state prison and a fine up to $10,000. Promotion of child pornography is a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 20 years in state prison and a fine up to $10,000.

Ex-Kindergarten Teacher Accused Of Exploiting Kids

HOUSTON -- A former kindergarten teacher previously accused by the state of Texas of crimes against children is now facing federal charges.

Stephen Wayne Sudduth, 35, of Sealy, Texas, was charged in a seven-count federal indictment returned by a Houston grand jury on Wednesday. He has been accused of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with his students in a foreign country, production of child pornography, transportation of child pornography and possession of child pornography.

Investigators said the incidents happened while Sudduth was teaching at the International School of Curacao in Willemstad on the Caribbean island of Curacao, which is part of the Netherlands Antilles. He was hired as a teacher there in August 2006. He taught 4- and 5-year-olds and provided tutoring and babysitting after school.

Sudduth has also taught kindergarten and fifth-grade students at Nottingham County Elementary in the Katy Independent School District.

Sudduth has been in custody on state charges in Austin County since July 2009. He's been charged with 30 counts of possession of child pornography and 10 counts of promoting child pornography. Investigators said he had 57,000 pictures and 1,000 videos containing child pornography on his computer.

He was set to start a job in the Hays Independent School District when he was arrested.
