Immigration Reform: The Phone Call Heard Around the Country

New America Media, News Report, Marcelo Ballvé, Posted: Nov 19, 2009

NEW YORK--Organizers described them as immigration reform "house parties."

Across the country last night, in churches, schools, immigrant support centers and private homes, backers of immigration reform gathered around telephones (the speaker phone turning the device into a de-facto radio) as Hispanic U.S. legislators laid out the strategy for pushing a reform of the immigration system in 2010.

On the call were Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill.; Nydia Velázquez, D-N.Y.; and Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz. Immigrant rights advocates from various parts of the country also spoke.

Quote
On the call, the legislators urged listeners -- 16,000 telephone lines were active during the event, connecting tens of thousands of participants -- to call their members of Congress and ask for action on immigration reform.

What kind of reform did they push for?

Quote
"We're going to make sure that the families that were broken by our system have a pathway to reunification," said Rep. Gutierrez, near the end of the call.

Did they encourage families to return to their country of origin?  Or, did they push for more people to break the laws of the United States?

Quote
"Call Congress," the teacher wrote. Below that, she wrote, "Text Justice."

The students dutifully took notes and began pressing the keys on their cell phones.

Meanwhile, the twang of guitars and wheeze of accordions drifted in from a nearby room -- a neighborhood music group was meeting at the same time.

Then the teacher read out the phone number to powerful New York Sen. Charles Schumer and urged her students to give him a call. Again, the students put their cell phones to work.

Fifteen minutes later it was time for the call in Spanish…

When speaker phones and large conference calls function like radio, where is the regulation?  The fact checking?

The nation is broke and has record unemployment.  Healthcare ‘reform’, stimulus bills, and Cap & Trade disasters loom on our future.

How many more people will come for all the entitlement goodies that seem to be handed out like Obama candy?

When will Americans and their children come first?

Why wasn't the call in multi-languages?  Polish?  Chinese?

Governor Deval Patrick today will unveil a state-commissioned report that urges him to push for driver’s licenses and in-state tuition for illegal immigrants, as well as English classes for foreign-born Massachusetts residents who need them.

Quote
Now they are among 131 recommendations in the “New Americans Agenda,’’ billed as the state’s most comprehensive blueprint for integrating immigrants into Massachusetts.

Quote
The majority of the 912,310 immigrants in Massachusetts are here legally; almost half are naturalized US citizens and other legal residents are waiting in line. But the authors of the report also urged Patrick to press federal officials to create a path to legal residency for immigrants here illegally, saying the harsh national debate casts a pall over all immigrants.

Does Massachusetts really have a problem they need to spend money on?  Why create legislation and spend money if there REALLY isn’t a problem?

Alternatively, I’ve read that the numbers of illegal aliens is hard to document.  Why not encourage these people to go home?

Why encourage more to come?  How many unemployed are in Massachusetts?

Quote
“We need to get past the rhetoric of hate that has dominated this debate and instead strive for policy choices that are in the best long-term interests of our nation,’’ Westy Egmont and Eva Millona, cochairmen of the Governor’s Advisory Council for Refugees and Immigrants, which authored the report, wrote in a letter to Patrick.

Where is the hate?  Past generations of immigrants did not have market baskets of entitlement programs to live off.  PAST GENERATIONS OF IMMIGRANTS CAME AND WORKED FOR A LIVING.  Today, it seems like illegal and legal immigrants get more than Citizens.

Quote
“Legal immigrants and illegal immigrants are competing for jobs,’’ she said. “One of the best things for legal immigrants would be to drastically reduce illegal immigration.’’

When does government start making life better for Americans?

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/11/17/in_state_tuition_drivers_licenses_urged_for_illegal_immigrants/

How many generations of Americans will be paying for all this spending?

It's great that any state wants to spend money on illegal aliens.  However, why do they cry to Obama when they can't balance the budget, and people are leaving due to high taxes?

Why should their spending be 'socialized' to all the rest of America?  Those who pay taxes and future generations?

Why not keep their social programs, spending, and debt to themselves?

What happened to eliminating programs that aren't working?

The cancer of stupidity in this nation seems to be growing.  No treatment program in sight.  Washington keeps spending and borrowing...

Who pays for these conference calls/radio/media broadcasts?

I didn't get an invitation.

Who pays for these boardcast invitations to lobby Congress and others?

Where do they get their funding?  Maybe their funding source can pay for entitlements, job creations...maybe they have a money tree?
